During my runs, I usually equip the character with a long range rifle, that shots one bullet, than a shotgun for more near fights. I don't understand the point on having guns. Probably machine-guns works good if someone try to assault the character, for it can dispose of a pack of enemies very easily, but a gun, like a 9 mm? That's not like a long range rifle, neither if it is a revolver.
>>3791500 (OP)It's just starting gun, the 9mm, and I usually switch it out or 9mm submachine gun.
But desu, unless you play on something like very hard and hardcore mode or jsawyer mod then it will be fine even to mid game, provided you have healing supplies, at least for up close fights.
>>3791509Yes, but I find the guns pointless, for they're not good for near-attacks like a shotgun and they cannot reach far away targets like a rifle. What's the point on using them?
BTW, what do you use during your runs?
>>3791500 (OP)The DT system renders most weapons pointless, including shotguns using slugs. It isn't really modelling guns well. The superiority of the hunting rifle is ridiculous.
>>3791525I don't like shotguns myself, at least the starting ones, too slow, 9mm pistol is even better to for early game, it's not that hard to get better guns than both of these options, even if you go on intended path south to Nipton first.
Every weapon type has a "lategame"(early midgame) perk that completely trivializes combat when using it. I switched from shotguns to rifles after getting shotgun surgeon because of how bland it made all encounters.
9mm SMG full of hollow points is great for cazadors. You're very likely to de-wing them and make them easy targets.
>>3791534the last time I played NV I intentionally didn't take a lot of the good perks (rapid reload, better criticals, finesse, shotgun surgeon, and stay back, probably some othes I'm forgetting)
it helped that I had a mod which added more perks though
>why do games have things that are not to my personal preference
RFK needs to deploy the autism vaccine ASAP
>i don't engage with systemic thought
can't cure stupidity
>>3791741and stay back is the main one to avoid
I think they probably meant it to go off per shot rather than per pellet but the stunlock is too ridiculous if you use it with the riot shotgun
>>3791530Use the shotgun surgeon perk it melts through most enemies DT
>>379235810 off the DT isn't melting. High damage weapons are simply superior because they work in all situations and need no perks at all. DT is an awful system.
>>3791500 (OP)>>3791525If one must question why anyone would use an assault rifle, you have to ask yourself why they exist in real life. In real life, being shot by any gun tends to fucking suck (.22 lr sucking complete ass is less of a thing in real life). This makes it effective to have a gun that can fire 30 shots like an assault rifle can, even if only in burst or semi auto. Yes, getting ammo for a fully automatic gun can suck, but you realize how great full auto can be (at least against you) when you play any rebalance mod where weapons do insane damage. In DUST, despite how stupid it sounds, npcs with nailguns are the enemies I fear the most because of their full auto gunfire that will just fucking shred me instantly. I don't feel this same level of fear with shotguns (if I am not in close range) or long-range rifles (if they miss). I know that FNV =/= DUST, but I think the extremeness of damage can highlight the usefulness of a gun once you aren't fighting normal video game enemies like this is Halo where enemies can tank entire assault rifle magazines. With all of this in mind, a machine gun can be both useful AND very satisfying (if you can get the fucking ammo for it) despite not being hyper-specialized in close range or long range.
>>3791754None of what I said is as strong as this statement though. FNV has so many guns, which should discourage the foolish decision to try figuring out a meta on which specific guns to use and nothing else. I'm pretty sure explosive weapons are not meta at all, but that doesn't mean people who try to do explosive builds are idiots who just don't understand that all their loot is going to fly around the room and go missing. No, it means they want to blow shit up and look cool! It's all just personal preference, just pick what's fun. I still want to try full auto or explosives only for an entire playthrough soon, though I frankly love plasma weapons the most of all in FNV.
>>3792413(Finally someone have taken seriously the matter of this thread.)
>>3792413Starting guns are 10mm? But even without the DLCs? I don't think.
>>3792413>figuring out a metaaka doing basic addition and subtraction.
holy shit nvtards are fucking dumb.
>>3793270If you mean figuring out the single shotgun is worse than a hunting shotgun, yeah, sure. Everyone fucking knows that, you aren't special. If you mean actually figuring out the best gun to rule them all, that just sounds unfun + likely requires more than basic math (ammo, ammo types, durability, range, how is it obtained, does it have any issues like explosives, what perks affect it, are the projectiles slow like plasma, is mercury in retrograde, etc.). Maybe someone can argue that it is the marksman carbine to be the one weapon worth using, but that's not exactly fun to only use the fucking all-american, is it?
>>3793183You don't necessarily get ONLY a 10mm pistol in each time, but I think the image is still accurate. The closest you'd even get to 9mm is the 9mm submachine gun in FNV, I believe.
Fallout 3 definitely should have started you off with a .32 pistol, vault-security issued. It would keep in line with the retro idea of what police should be armed with, the lack of major threats in a vault, & the fact that a 10mm handcannon in a confined space would leave you deaf.
The local raiders (who are the real ethnic makeup of the area) are clearly descended from a huge mish-mash that includes Chinamen & their sympathizers/fifth-columnists, hence the term for mutated bears, so they should carry Chicom pistols at high rates, which would be your upgrade into the magnum-pistols tier, albeit unreliable & innacurate.
American 10mils & .44s should have been rarer, found on Rivet City Security, Talon Company, as BoS sidearms, on Paradise Slavers, etc.
American rifles should have given you an accuracy bonus over the Chicom rifles' higher durability, with equal base damage, so there would be some reason to use them.
Enclave in APA should be a nightmare to fight without Gauss, Plasma, Fire, Electro, or a lot of Las or Explo damage.
& if the BoS are recruiting, they should have Initiates in Combat Armor going up against the raiders, mercs, & slavers so the battles are less one-sided in-game.
Lastly, customized power armor for Fawkes if you side with any of the big tech factions.
>>3793299>figuring out the best gun to rule them all, that just sounds unfun + likely requires more than basic mathit's an rpg formula, it's literally just basic math. no guns are "fun" in NV, it's a really poorly designed shooter.
>>379236110 is enough to break through everything with any shotgun round i believe even up to power armor
>>3792413>>3793299New Vegas starts you with a 9mm if you don't have the starting gear DLCs installed
>>3793848What would you all make the starting loadouts for each tagged skill? Doesn't have to be gear found in New Vegas already. I would personally split-up pistols & longarms, hence the following:
Unarmed - Brass Knuckles & Boxing Tape
Melee - Hatchet (Throwable) or Throwing Knives
Energy - Homemade Heat Ray (Modded Toaster)
Pistols - .32 Pocket Revolver
Longarms - .22 Boy Scout Rifle (Single-Shot)
Explo - M80 Bottles
>>3793332A hunting rifle is enough with no perks.
At one point in time, I played the game like a weird scavver. The rule I imposed on myself was if I ran out of ammo, I threw the gun on the ground.
It did make the inventory easier to manage...
>>3791525Energy Weapons, I like the glow and the "Splowshhsht!" sound of the plasma rifle and the "Tsskt! Tsskt!" sound of energy weapons.
>>3791500 (OP)maria is 9mm and really good on a crit build, from what i remember
>>3791525being "good" in an RPG is overrated
>oh wow i can one-shot literally everythinggets boring real fast
rolling nerfed characters is the real GOAT, and its why RPGs rule. insane replayability
>what do you use during your runsi usually just come up with a character/theme before i start and stick to it (roleplaying opportunities notwithstanding)
for pistols: try any of the small guns outside of 9mm and 10mm
the .45 pistols you get from HH are stupid powerful. you just have to rush HH. the 12.7mm ones are mean af too if you dont have HH for whatever reason
theres good pistols
try it. perk your character out to specialize in running around in light armor and only using pistols or one handed SMGs
>>3791633those craftable MFC grenades are my favorite for that
huge AoE compared to standard nades, pretty much ensures youll cripple all their wings if you take em by surprise
I will only take any Fallout guns discussion seriously if it's about jSawyer or jSawyer Ultimate.
>>3794390>maria is 9mm and really good on a crit build, from what i rememberMaria is for shooting Benny with, nothing more.
>>3794390>being "good" in an RPG is overratedToo bad New Vegas is an awkward FPS-RPG hybrid adaptation of Oblivion, lol. That's the reason you have to really stretch outside the mechanics to have fun.
I assume by "guns" retard OP means "handguns". And as to why use them? Because they're fuckin cool.
>>3794510nah youre just retarded
if youre a crit/LCK build it can be a very good pistol
>holdout weapon>extended mag>fast reload>no recoil>non-existent spread>no STR requirement>no skill requirement>low AP cost>double damage crits>better than avg durability>runs on basic bitch, dirt cheap ammo thats always in abundance/can be craftedif youre not looking to ever max out your guns skill and/or raise your STR to where you can use
>>3794628 and other heavier pistols, its probably one of the best around
>>3794512>muh awkward FPS-RPG hybridnever had that problem since im not a cowadoody/gaylo fag. its only you geeks that ever REEE about chance-to-hit being in an RPG. i dont want it to be a straight shooter, and i probably wouldnt have even played it if it was one.
imo its unironically an advantage. if chance-to-hit wasnt there, you could just get rly sweaty and 360noscope everyone with your lvl1 nobody character who has a guns skill of 15. it would suck.
the way its implemented in-game forces different characters, that are specced differently, to actually play differently.
its one of the more important things to have in any decent RPG: something that divorces the players personal skill from their characters skills
>>3794391Did anyone ever make a mod that gives you more explosive weapons that are designed to work similarly to the MFC cluster
like just give me a damn frag grenade sticky cluster instead of making me try to live with the insane super bouncy ball physics of grenades in the oblivion engine
>>3794938You'd probably rather just have a mod that lets you cast thrown fireballs (similar to Nuka Grenades) after getting the Lesko Ant Vaccine imo
>>3794664Other way around retard. I hate FPS games. Hybrids are fucking stupid, worst of both worlds.
>>3793332It can melt through base combat armor which only has a DT of 15. Anything higher than that is rare or DLC only. And we're not even counting flechette rounds here.

>yet have no problems with the weapons he designed and balanced himself in new vegas
>>3795212People who like NV aren't particularly bright.
>>3795212Josh's GRA Bozar is bad and ironically not well balanced against either the LMG or the Fo2's Bozar.
>>3791500 (OP)>btw all of this stuff is about base FNV; no mods9mm guns are early-game guns, right? You find 9mm pistols and SMGs on raiders outside nipton, Maria is found on Benny at the end of the first act, the unique 9mm SMG can be found on the outskirts of vegas, etc.
Regardles, though. The single shot guns are more powerful in this game because of the way DT works. I think a loading screen talks about it, tougher enemies value higher DAM stat over higher DPS. Especially since later areas and the DLC have lots of small groups of tough enemies (robo scorpions, Deathclaws, burned men, tunnelers) high DAM will carry you into that late game. (or if you have a melee weapon that ignores DR/DT)
Speaking of melee, if you want to mix it up, try playing melee on very hard difficulty. It makes the game harder, up until you realize you can brew all sorts of drugs and buffs. It made me engage with the survival system in a way I hadn't before.
>>3794664>its only you geeks that ever REEE about chance-to-hit being in an RPG.People shitting on Fallout 3/NV gunplay is unironically just a presentation problem stemming from the first person camera; If they locked you into 3rd person only, people wouldn't piss and moan about the "terrible gunplay" and "inaccurate guns" nearly as much. Fallout 3 especially was clearly meant to be played primarily in 3rd person, and you were only meant to enter the first person camera to search for hidden loot, but retards play it like it's CoD and piss and moan about no aim down sights. YOUR CHARACTER does aim down sights and try to hit where you're aiming to the best of their abilities, but because it's a ROLEPLAYING GAME just because you the player can line up dot with enemy head doesn't mean your character doesn't somehow fuck up the shot by jerking the trigger like a retard due to low skill, low agility/perception, or just plain bad luck.
>>3794512Just use a Laser Rifle. Low requirements, laser precise, good rate of fire especially with the Fast Shot trait (which barely affects it's accuracy) and can be made into an end game crit build with the Laser Commander perk and the Beam Splitter modification where each beam can deal full crit damage. Can also get a scope.
Plus energy weapons only have 1 ingredient for crafting custom ammo. No shuffling cases, powder and lead, just convert your microfusion cells into a smaller number of max charge or optimized cells.
I like to get the laser rifle from Nipton that's in near broken condition near the ash pile then repair and modify it.
>>3795589Unless you're using a gun with high accuracy. Low requirements optional. Then your character is as accurate as the player.
>>3795683I've played the game, anon, I fully engaged with all the systems.
>end game crit buildlmao, the game is piss easy. You don't need a "build".
Last time I tried playing the game I wanted to go full smg build. I also went repair so I could make my own bullets. Very quickly I was realizing you just can't deal with DT with smgs at all. Even with the better ammo you can make, they're just so weak from the mid point on.
>>3795786Even the .50 cal / 12.7mil one?
>>3795744Point was that a laser rifle is actually a good weapon through the whole game. Yes, you can beat the game with a 9mm or recharger rifle but that sucks.
Turns the gunplay from bad/awkward to tepid since now your gun always hits what you're aiming at regardless of if you scope or run & gun.
It's fascinating seeing how much thought you retards will put into a game as basic as this. There are two gun skills and the only difference is whether the gun shoots bullets or lasers. Otherwise every weapon is totally compatible with a singular stat. What even is there to discuss? I remember beating this for the first time and having zero perks related to bazookas anything and just shooting a rocket launcher at some random group of guys and accidentally killing the final boss and the game ended. It is genuinely more basic than skyrim
>>3796126My point was that the game is easy as hell and you can beat it with a hunting rifle. All the systems at play are poorly made.
>>3796135Exactly. It's smoothbrain shit, I think people are attempting to pretend that it's more complex than it is because they like the game for all the elements apart from combat, factions and quests and shit.
>>3796136And laser rifle curbs complaints. What more could you want than hitting what you're aiming at. Specifically.
>>3796140You've confused yourself by projecting a complaint onto me. I've been complaining about DT, not dice roll accuracy.
>>3795786The 100 guns one is good enough to do anything you'd do with guns. The Thompson fully modded is good enough to do anything too.
>>3795766Still making a nuisance of yourself?
>>3796136Yeah, I played it as a kid and enjoyed it thoroughly I won't lie but the ending in particular really soured me(the bazooka thing) I also played it whichever path makes you fight the big evil legion guy and remember rolling my eyes upon discovering terrifying presence just lets you skip the entire fucking fight basically
>>3796205Ah, I was focusing on the complaint of it being an awkward hybrid with an FPS.
But now I wonder why you're complaining about DT while also talking like builds don't matter.
>>3791500 (OP)I pretty much always end up using a sniper rifle and a semi automatic pistol.
Automatic guns are really just useless. Not going to bother using a gun that breaks after you use it for 2 minutes and requires you to carry a gazillion rounds
