Is Final Fantasy 13 worth six dollars? I know the story is bad but is the gameplay any good?

I only buy Final Fantasy games full price on release date.
Sometimes I even get the preorder deals. This one came with a hardback walkthrough guide. It didn't need a walkthrough guide. It's a literal hallway of scenery porn.

It was highly anticipated. Because all ps3 games were in development hell. The only reason we got 13-2 and Lightning Returns is because they had so much cut content to recycle.

Of course we never got Versus XIII, and instead got FF15. Which I didn't get on release. Because I never bought a PS4. But I did get the Royal Edition on the PS5. That was probably a better deal.

I don't think FFXIII had any rereleases or special editions.

There was still tons of strategy guides coming out during these days, but most were pretty bad, and it made them seem even worse since now they had tons of online resources to compete with.
What I always liked most about strategy guides was when they would be loaded up with things that you would never know about otherwise, and things like lore, exclusive art, and development notes. But, it seemed like most of them during this generation were just barebones walkthroughs with some crappy maps and stuff.
(I think I actually have the strategy guide for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City that I got free somewhere many years ago. I wonder how bad that thing is.)

Better question is how little do you value your own life to the point where you'd play a subpar hallways sim with a pseudo auto-battler combat system.

I had a storage trunk with all the old strategy guides for games I played growing up. So many in such good condition. Not sure where it is now.

Have you still got your hardback guide for FF8? If so you should do a side-by-side comparison with FF13's. It's actually quite remarkable how much content is effectively missing from 13's, relatively speaking.

Also curious if you've still got 7's, how does it compare to 8 and 9's?

The game could be free and it still wouldn't be worth it. The gameplay is even more numbing than XII because it's just flat-out boring. At least in XII you could adjust gambits for different fights and have a ton of job combos, here it's just bleh.

Story is WOAT, hallway simulator is WOAT, characters are not fun. It's so goddamn bad, don't touch any FF game after XII (and even that's pushing it at times.)

I like it. I often get lost in most RPGs I play and its really, really hard to get lost in this game. I can see why people don't like it. But I find it really fun. Easy to play after work, hits all the spots. I thought I would miss going to towns, but I don't care at all. You can shop at the save points. Also, its fun to grind in. Looking for more games that are about as linear as 13 actually.

X honestly, it still has towns but most of them are pretty small. other than that the game is just as linear as XIII, pretty much every area is just a straight line forward. it's interesting how the game was good enough that no one really complained about it, but in XIII i think the game was so poorly received it stuck out more.

VIII is the roman numeral for 8

I think complaints about linearity of FFX just kind of got shoved under the complaint of not having a real airship, which was universally disappointing but no one thought that was enough to be a killshot.

i think it helps that X has a much better story, setting and characters. it's alien but you can at least follow what's going on, you don't have characters talking in a gobbeldy gook foreign language about "la'cies" or whatever the fuck that literally requires a wiki to understand. and Tidus is your John Everyman that's just as lost as you are after the intro which is interesting, because the game starts off with the shoe on the other foot. and he and Yuna are certainly more relatable than Lightning are.

X at least has some mini games and side content to do, in XIII for the first 10 chapters there is LITERALLY nothing to do except progress the main quest. you could grind for upgrade materials I guess

>tfw like FF13 story AND gameplay
I mean the gameplay is just essentially SMT without the press turn. You debuff/buff then unga bunga then debuff/buff then UNGA BUNGA. it's kinda fun but true it can get old fast if you don't have the tism.
Story is also neat but I'd say keep it in jp dub because eng dub makes it significantly more campier. I think it may not land together with people because the pacing is a little scuffed but it is a unique gimmick about how it's an ensemble plot doing their own thing. It feels a lot like FF6 but if you mixed in a lot of anime in there which again you may not like. I do so seeing when one of your party members tries to kill another because he let his mom die was fucking kino to me.

Problem with combat is you're just rushing to max the Stagger bar. For the kind of combat system game has there's way too many throwaway encounters and not enough boss fights that make you use the Paradigm system sufficiently. Probably why something like the Cid fight is interesting because you get the system turned on YOU for a change,

oh i had autism and just did debuff/buff on like all of the encounters. it did get a little tiresome but the stagger bar was definitely some dopamine shit. I think they needed something more like you can stack stagger bars and if you do you get a screen clearing cool AoE attack or something. I have no idea why they made the limit break attacks the way they are. XIII battle system was great to me but it needed just one last little oomph like magatsuhi or whatever it's called from SMT V.
