I remember I had this game as a teen, and I really like the setting and aesthetic of the game, but got filtered hard by the combat.

However, I've heard the game is actually really easy if you abuse triangle attacks? Can someone explain this in a way a retard can understand?

I'm thinking of giving it another shot while the steam sale is still on.

Why do you want to cheese the game? That's not winning.
Why do you people play games in the first place

It literally is.

You want to hero action every turn, ideally recharging at least one bezel and setting up your squad for a triangle attack in the process, then triangle attack. It's not even cheesing because that's the entire combat system desu there's literally nothing else to it. The only semblance of challenge is at the very beginning when you only have 3 bezels and your guns are shit so doing a hero action without getting a break or kill can spell death

RoF is one of those games like Vagrant Story that confuses noobs with a bunch of numbers and systems but is mindnumbingly shallow when you dig into it

I recently played and finished this game for the first time this year
Yeah sure the aesthetic is fine and I really wanted to love this game, but the battles do not change at all so it gets quite boring

Play for a few hours then maybe watch some cutscenes

I forgot the gimmick to Vagrant Story but once I figured it out I got far. I wound up stuck at one boss and didn't care to play to grind a weapon up to get past it. This was back when it was released.

Refresh my memory on that game, how did the system go again? Something like you attack an enemy type to gain damage proficiency against it, and some elemental shit mixed in, right?

Been a while, but I believe in VS different enemies are weak to different weapon types, so you need to cycle through your weapons constantly, otherwise you deal chip damage and get stonewalled.

Weapon type (blunt/edged/piercing) and affinity (element) are the main stats that determine damage iirc. You carry one weapon of each type and use gems and enchantments to change elemental affinities during combat. Class (human/beast/dragon/etc) is a red herring stat that leads people to think they need to grind out a new setup for every dungeon or boss but you can basically steamroll the game with random junk you find laying around. Like you'll literally find a big holy gem right outside an undead-themed area so you don't have to make a weapon specifically for it

Okay so, there is a line on the ground between your party members. Run through that line and it builds up this action number for each. Once everyone can go at least once you can commit a triangle attack which is all three of your guys running and shooting the shit out of stuff at the targets.

bigger triangles = more time to target and shoot things
triangle size = distance between party members WHEN you initiate the attack

That's another game that filtered me. I was planned on giving it another shot since I recently finished FFT and FFTA (also bought FF12 during the steam sale).

You can easily beat the game without using a single Triangle Attack.

The centralizing mechanic is the Hero Run.
Activating a Hero Run costs a Bezel, but you get a Bezel back if you break an enemy part or score a kill.
The character who is preforming a Hero Run is invincible while doing it. Since you can freely chose what character takes action on your turn, Run a character with the yellow caution "You're being targeted" indicator next to their name to avoid damage.
Combat flow is basically run a Machine Gun user to soften up enemies and then run a Handgun user to break 2 parts/score 2 kills to refund your Bezels.
Then repeat that process for THE ENTIRE GAME.

extra notes:
Character level is the sum of their level in the three weapon types (machine gun/handgun/grenade) swap weapon types between characters to level up faster.
Firing from the ground during a Hero Run does damage to the closest enemy part. Firing from a jump hits random exposed enemy parts on each shot.
You generally want to charge up as much as possible before firing, but in the very early game Handguns can output more damage per turn by firing as fast and often as possible instead. You'll know when it's time to switch to full charging Handguns too by watching enemy health bars
You can squeeze out a little more charge time by saving your jump until right before the end of your Hero Run

Never stand and shoot. That option only exists as a last ditch in case you run out of Bezels when something is close to dead.

Alternatively, abuse chain attacks and ignore the affinity system like a retard (me).

Loved this stupid game but I never finished it. Need to revisit it at some point.
