This is one of those games where you have to manage your expeditions out into the world. You probably won't see your recruits coming back if you send them all at different corners of the world at the same time.
It's also a good idea to separate any expedition group into two groups. That way if one group runs into a fight and losses, you'll have another healthy group close by, ready to swoop in and save the other group.
You will eventually find the limits of the contents of that world and it might be a little depressing once you get there. But that's when the real roleplaying starts since it's when you know what you want to do in that world, rather than just react to it with survival instinct.
