Thoughts on Radiant Historia? You don't see it talked about much.

Phenomenal. I would love to see it remade and on PC and modern consoles. It's a hidden gem. I really loved the combat. The voice acting was superb, really wasn't expecting that. The writing was good, the premise, the art, the music... Honestly probably a 10/10 game.

Very good, overall.
Arti direction of the 3ds rerelease is kinda miss sometimes and the new route to explain 'origins' of chronicles is kinda meh as are some aspects of the new 'golden' route. But I did like the new extra alternate universe scenarios

One of the rare times I'd actually side with the villain. Enjoyed the soundtrack and enjoyed the story for the most part.
Got annoying when fighting bosses that take up all 9 squares. Sure, let me just reset the game and redo the last couple minutes so I can rearrange my party members.
Pissing off the twins at one point being necessary to get the golden ending was kinda funny.
Most of the people I wanted to die died, and some of the ones I wanted to didn't. Can't win them all I guess.
I liked some of the new stuff from the 3DS version and disliked others.
Seeing the Gutral chief admit the beastmen were part of the problem because they just sat on the sidelines blaming the humans while doing nothing themselves to try and solve anything was nice, even if it was in retrospective and at a point where it was too late to do anything about it. Worth putting up with Nemesia just to see that alt timeline.
Overall I consider it a memorable experience and a game worth playing at least once in your life. It's not perfect, but it's fun.

I replayed it recently after not playing it since it came out. I loved it at the time but I thought it was really average on replay, and really just signalled how starved we were for classic JRPGs at the time. It's barely finished, has almost no unique bosses or weapons so none of the big moments hit (you don't even get to fight the two enemy generals, just their "guards"), the game railroads you hard so you never get to really explore the time mechanic much, you trip over cutscenes telling you what to do or repeating information constantly. A huge shame considering it has some cool designs and characters that had potential to be interesting, as it is only Aht and Stocke develop at all past their introduction tho.

>Remake butchered the original somber atmosphere with needless voice acting and portrait changes

Voiceacting has become more and more important for broader appeal for RPGs, so it's the correct choice. Blame all the games with voiceacting that sets the precedent.

I have a copy of it for my 3ds but I'm thinking of emulating it because even with a grip the 3ds is pretty uncomfortable at this point. I do hear it's very good, though I should probably finish dragon quest V first.

Great game. For once the protagonist is actually smart instead of some retard chosen by fate.

I played the remake but didn't do any of the remake content so not sure how that would factor in to my rating.

The voice acting would have ruined the atmosphere if it were bad. It was spectacular in this game, as I commented before. I was blown away by it honestly because I usually don't like voice acting.

VA should always be able to be turned off since we have text regardless. It's a simple option to make and would have everybody happy. Same as having the original soundtracks, and options for different languages. Especially since they're going to start charging more for games.

The combat is a little half-baked, and it doesn't capitalize on the time travel tool as well as it could have, but the story is excellent and the original true ending is 10/10.
People rag on the remake for a lot of things but the only truly unforgivable one to me is the new story and ending. I've seen it too many times with Atlus remakes: they say they've got the original devs back and then shit out something that completely contradicts the original themes. You can disable it entirely, at least.

My guess is that they were trying to appeal to people who are interested in surface level anime. It just looked generic and sterile. At least in the 3DS you can hack it to get the old portraits for free.

mind giving me some spoilers on the remake ending? I played it back on ds, but not remake. I really didn't like the thought of a golden ending for this game, and it looked like that was what remake added.

Let's see...
Stocke meets a princess from the civilization that ruined everything, Nemesia. Her lover, a researcher who made the Chronicles, was resented by her parents and experimented on until he turned into a monster that drained the mana from everything. This, rather than continuous abuse of Thaumatech, is suggested to be the original reason for desertification. You go through time once more and create a bunch of new endings redeeming and saving basically every character in the game, even Protea and Hugo. You kill Nemesia's boyfriend, saving the world, and everyone lives happily ever after. Heiss dodged his noble sacrifice, keeps his chronicle, and uses it to go whenever he wants. Even Nemesia and her boyfriend get saved in the very last scene.
It's ridiculous. On the other hand, goat ass.

Oof. That definitely manages to be worse than a "mere" golden ending. I'm gonna take a lot of mental damage if I ever play it. Thanks for the write up.

A lot of this tracks. The premise is fine. But you end up spending much of your time in the trenches. The combat premise is great but in practice becomes rather tedious. Time travel premise is great but you end up doing the same thing (progress one timeline until you can't, hop timelines, rinse and repeat). You just end up spending a lot of time on trite shit. Both times I tried to play RH I ended up quitting around the same point. Maybe it gets better but it mostly felt like it was slowly edging me the entire time.
