I think Gilgamesh is cooler but I prefer not to have someone just pop up and kill enemies at random, I'm skipping both.
Degenerator is cheap, I only use it to farm items (like elnoyles to get energy crystals). The Adamantoise can also be beaten by casting reflect on them so their white wind doesn't heal them but after figuring that out I just blasted degenerator.

>Over lvl 50 at the end of disc 2, it's way more fun if you actually fight most enemies.
Not really. I was level 100 by the end of disc three and it was still pretty boring, because fighting the tough stuff you need in order to level up is going to give you materials that refine into spells to make you stronger, and if you use them, you'll still be strong as fuck.
>inb4 "HURRRRR, don't use them then"
When you have to rely on the player purposefully limiting themselves in order to have any kind of challenge or satisfaction, you've made a bad game. It's not even fucking hard to get OP and stay OP for the entirety of FF8. You basically just need to refine some curagas, waters, and tornadoes on disc 1 (incredibly easy as most of the items are drops/steals from common overworld enemies, or simply available to buy in stores), and then most of it won't need to be replaced until after the strong enemies appear in Esthar on disc 3β€”and you'd need to farm those same enemies to get stuff to make the ultimate weapons, anyway.

Yeah, the most efficient way to get OP is to play Triple Triad obsessively in the early game, but even if you don't, you still practically trip over everything you need to stay OP throughout the game. FF8 is only challenging if you're the kind of retard who doesn't engage with game mechanics, won't look at their inventory, or simply can't look at two numbers and tell which is higher.

I didn't say it was, retard. But if you play a game without trying to understand its mechanics and refusing to do what you actually need to do to get stronger, that's on you. Even if you knew jack shit about the level scaling in 1999, reading the instruction manual tells you that the best way to get stronger is to junction, and the game throws amazing refining materials right in your lap fairly early, so if you refuse to do that and instead just keep grinding and losing, it doesn't speak highly of your cognitive skills.

You're assuming the game scales linearly which isn't true. Different enemies scale at different rates and some gain additonal abilities at higher levels.
There was also min/max levelcaps in the PSX release.

Even if you ignore the in-game tutorial and just start level grinding and reach a point where suddenly the enemies are fucking you up even more while your strength stagnates, wouldn't that make you say, "hmmm, is there maybe another way I can get stronger?"

The game shouldn't have to warn you that enemies will get more difficult, lmao. Finding a solution to that is your job as the player. And both the manual and the game literally give you the solution.

Don't listen to >>3795956, he's an obvious troll.

The English voice actor is absolutely awful with zero emotional range regardless of whether or not he's trans, but that's not the reason Wuk Lamat is hated because she's hated across all language zones including Japan. She's hated because she's an insufferable Mary Sue who forces her way into the main character slot and forces the player to be reduced to little more than a babysitter for her adventures, who constantly forces herself into the spotlight including getting the killing blow on the final boss of her expansion, and who literally gets everything handed to her for free because she has the power of friendship, despite being a sheltered child with zero real-life skills and not even the most basic knowledge of the very kingdom we help her become the ruler of.

The expansion has more narrative issues than just Wuk Lamat (gameplay-wise it's actually a pretty decent expansion), but she represents the worst of them.

>The cast in 12 was so bad that it gaslit you into thinking Balthier was cool
That tripped me out. Everyone talks about how he was so cool and badass and the real main character, but in the actual game he's this fucking fop who INSISTS he's the main character but then proceeds to be just as irrelevant and forgettable as Vaan except his tiny backstory is a little closer to the Empire. Not to mention his fruity-ass jewelry.

I wouldn't say so. Dude wasn't hyped up to be important at all while XV was driving it home how important Stella was and how people were devastated after her lameass death

Exactly this. Balthier in any other FF game would be considered lame, but the bar in 12 was set SO LOW he was considered awesome and cool. In my opinion, that alone highlights Vaan as the worst protag in any FF game, and Penelo is like Vaan but somehow worse.
In fact, when was the last time an FF game, or even just the Japs in general, managed to create a female character in a game like Penelo? One who is so bland she generates no fan fiction, no weeb interest, no goonerbait, no love, not even really any hate, just the world's loudest meh of irrelevancy.
Penelo is the Kristen Stewart of FF females.
Anonymous No.3799590 >>3799591

Played it recently. I think Balthier is actually a decent character. He and Fran are just FF Han Solo and Chewy. You even get a cool judge dad fight and a redemption ending deal. I think the actual problem was too much story was cut to shoehorn in Vaan and Penelo. Even Basche and Ashe don’t get enough screen time imho and they’re the main characters. I think we would have gotten a better game without Vaan and Penelo. Or at very least way better story telling.

It also bothers me that two of the characters are called Basche and Ashe, that kind of naming convention should be reserved exclusively for clumsy twins who only exist for comedic relief.

I'm not really sure this should count, but the music in the opening to FFX - I remember playing it for the first time, and when that heavy guitar riff kicks in with those growly vocals, it really made me sit up and pay attention. It was so unlike anything FF had done up to that point, and even now when I replay it that music has a certain impact on me
Now I think about it, it's kinda strange how it's so out of step with the rest of the game, with the focus being on religion and the hymn of the faith - I wonder what they were thinking?

Could be just that: to highlight the difference between the worlds.

Remember the yevon prayer used to be just a sign for victory in blizzball, nothing religious.

And maybe the rebellious vibe ties into Tidus coming from a different world to defy Spira's entire foundation, but maybe that's reaching too far.

It's a memorable intro and music, if nothing else.

Hate to side with him, but if you're unable to understand common pronunciations and cannot see the potential phonetic overlap you should apply for a job translating the next ff title.

Good translations account for potential regional dialects, it's one of the reasons you use a team of translators and don't rely on an individual.
