It's definitely overrated, but at the same time there's also very little else like it, so it wins some originality points, there. I've played it twice and both times were a struggle because the game never really gets out of its own way, and when it does, the actual game mechanics are incredibly bland, even for turn-based JRPGs.

Mother 3 is good, but could be said to be overrated by its connection to Earthbound that somehow elevates it from a fairly solid JRPG to Jesus 3.0
Earthbound, meanwhile, is a mid DQ clone with a Peanuts skin that is only notable due to the Giygas battle curveball, that makes people retroactively pretend like the whole game before it is some deep lore SOVLFVL masterpiece. It really is not.
