Recommendations for someone who loved GOTHIC
I just want a game that will scratch the itch as that franchise did.
After the first two gothic games and Chronicles of Myrtana it feels tough to find something similar.
Give me something that won't make me dislike its story or its combat (like how Skyrim did fuck I hate that game I'd buy it only for Enderal)
On a note, I have already heard of these games : Arx Fatalis, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Witcher, VtMB, the Elder Scrolls games, the Piranha Bytes games.

If you're into the whole "exlore the world and seek crumbs of power" then "Inquisitor" (picrel) is up your alley.

Good God, why would you recommend that potion chugging simulator?

>potion chugging simulator?
Because Gothic is one too, duh!

Look, I ain't here to argue that Gothic's combat is good. I sure didn't like it.
But I would still take it over Inquisitor, which commits the cardinal sin of having incredibly dull combat (stand there and attack, chug potions like mad for health, mana AND stamina all the time, run back to town to get more if you run low) and insisting on having extensive nothing-but-combat segments over and over. I desperately wanted to enjoy that game, but I've suffered levels of burnout I previously thought impossible in a cRPG.

Just play it on easy because combat sucks.

None. The problem is that Gothic is one of a kind, there's really nothing else like it. The other Piranha Bytes games, obviously, bear the closest resemblance, but even they are very different. Out of them all I, personally, can only recommend checking out Risen 1, everything else I found to be very underwhelming. If you’ve already played Gothic 1-2 and Archolos, then you’ve played every available Gothic game. You might try your luck with the mods, like Legend of Ahssun, for example, but don’t expect Archolos type of quality.

Gothic 1 and 2 are totally one of a kind. They are so immersive and enjoyable to me and I have trouble putting my finger on why. The combat is rough, the dialogue can be goofy, the pacing is very slow, the worldbuilding isn't necessarily groundbreaking, the art direction isn't really unique... but it all comes together.

I think the magic comes from having a very small, dense open world. Every quest, every NPC, every piece of dialogue feels hand crafted with passion. Every part of the game feels like it has purpose.

In something like Witcher 3, the world is so big and so full of crap 50% of it feels like filler, so as a player we start to optimize our time and look at the game like a kid at a theme park. I only have so much time, which rides should I go on? The quests and interactions start to boil down into categories with predictable rewards. If I catch this monster I get some armor. If I kill 10 wolves I get some gold. Loot is commonplace to be pointless.

Whereas Gothic is so tight and strange. You never know how an NPC's request will play out. There is no sense of cookie cutter "rides" that you go on. The world feels organic and reactive to you. Every item and piece of loot has importance and rarity. And on top of it all every NPC feels like a real character who reacts to you in a systemic way.

There are many handcrafted worlds in RPGs. Ultima 7 for instance, and it even has bad combat like Gothic.

I can't say I really recommend it, but there are some similarities, so: Two Worlds?

The Witcher has much better writing than Gothic though.

I never understand why the cRPG with the shittiest combat are always the ones that insist on huge stretches of pure combat
It keeps happening

What I'd really like, personally, is a more specific recommendation of a game that actually encourages you to (and rewards you for) using consumables and the like to deal with things you otherwise couldn't. I can think of only a handful, as usually the developers seem terrified of making scrolls/potions/whatever actually useful and you just end up sitting on them forever or selling it all.

This one is going to be an odd suggestion but try Infinite space
Gathering crew in random situations, raising crew stats and fitting your tetris ships scratched the same itch for me

On Steam there's a mod that adds out of combat health & mana regen. Call me a normie but that addition completely changed the game for me. It went from having to artistically hunt down random bushes to make pots to being able to freely explore & enjoy the story & world without burdens. Now G2 is one of my all time favorites. I highly recommend it, especially for a first time run.

there's a simple effective gamepad mod, I had fun replaying that way. But the default controls aren't that bad, you just remember that
>hold CTRL and press up
does everything.

Okay I will try it again I watched a yt vid about the controls and doesnt seem bad when you get used to it

Yeah I have more than mixed feelings on this. The game punishes you for getting hit and forces you to recover by resting in beds, eating and so on. Or by forcing you to quickload in disgrace. Call it tedium but it's a timeout punishment for poor play. With that mod you just stumble from fight to fight and don't care about getting hit
Anonymous No.3806055 [Report]
>>3806018
It takes some time, but when the controls click you'll find them very good and responsive.
Also you can obviously rebind pretty much everything.

Ultima 9, Might and Magic IX, Master of Orion 3, Diablo 3, X-COM Apocalypse, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, Heroes 6.. such disappointments.

(I wonder why it's always divisible by 3)

gothic is nothing, try original system shock and ultima underworld. standardized controls weren't a thing back then, so often you had to memorize a unique control scheme for every new game you played. the reason is was easier is that you didn't have access to 5000 new games a day on steam with high speed internet.
