Why do some people insist on calling this game Action/Adventure and not Action RPG?

It has leveling, stats based progression and quests and zones based on levels and you have player agency albeit not as much as something like Witcher 3 or Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

This is ARPG game which combines Action/Adventure genre with RPG, a very common combo that tends to sell a lot.

a game can have rpg elements and not be an rpg.

no, an ARPG is first and foremost fully an rpg, which then has some action elements added on top.
it depends on the direction you approach the genres from, and which is still the dominant gameplay genre.

It is an ARPG, but I don't see the point of focusing on this so hard.

Apart from the big reveal in the first game, the story and characters are the worst part of these games.

Horizon has the RPG elements and its an action/adventure game therefore its an Action RPG.


I think you don't know what RPG means, go ahead and write your definition i will pinpoint to you where its wrong.

Dunno about Dragon Age but TW3 and Mass Effect aren't RPGs. Prior has no gameplay and build variety (no, stat modifiers don't make a "build") and latter is a third person shooter.

pretty much every classic "genre" has started to bleed into each other. all action adventure games have some sort of stat leveling and skill progression taken from RPGs, RPGs can have platforming elements, shooters have dialogue trees and divergent quest outcomes. game genres used to be much more defined, but we have had conceptual blled as both technology and our understandings of game design have progressed. this isn't a problem per se, what is an issue is trying to define everything in absolutes. once we start defining things in absolutes like this, we start to condemn that which does not fit the definition. far too many times have i seen someone shit on a game because it is claimed to be within a genre but defies the genre expectations. they think the game is bad because it does not fit convention. this leads to stagnation.

anyways, you shouldn't talk about horizon here. not because it is or isn't an RPG, but because it isn't a good game.
