When this came out, we had an aged pentium 1 that was like 160 MHz and Deus Ex ran like shit on it, chugged and with abysmal framerate. We got a new pentium 3 800 MHz and it ran like absolute butter, was great. Funny how we will never see clock speed jumps like that again.

Something like that, it’s a launcher for various Unreal engine games to make them play nice on modern systems) and if you’d like throw some upscaled texture packs on there to make your eyes bleed a bit less. swimming is most useful at the underwater research lab. but the game gives you free rebreather items for that map.
make sure to keep the crossbow if you wanna fight underwater, otherwie you can only use melee weapons.

Normal is fine. "Realistic" is like the tactical shooters where 1 shot kills you dead, so don't play that mode unless you're gonna go full-stealth no-combat except for boss fights.

Play as a low tech ninja and eschew all augs. You don’t need to take any aside from the flashlight you start the game with.

Revision is awful, adds questionable random stuff (like the shed in the first area) and changes the layout of the maps, don't play that crap, it's like some modder with 0 taste just arbitrarily adding aesthetically clashing shit for no reason. The faces are also modded for the worse. Play GMDX if you want to play a mod that is faithful to vanilla graphically

turned it into a semi-roguelike. randomised drops and get skill points from most kills like a "real" RPG. no pointless graphical changes.

I know I'm a few days late with this but I'm replaying it atm and honestly vanilla is enough for first time. The graphics are what they are and gameplay-wise vanilla is fine. Kenties launcher + DX10 patch is all you need. You can try mods when you're starting a new playthrough later.
Had some good laughs again at the soulful old school jank, just yesterday I was gunned by a guard when escaping MJ12 and then Miguel ran up to my dead body and said "Don't worry, I got you covered", and then they just stood there. In contrast, the jank in HR is just annoying.
