I honestly would prefer a game like FFIV or FFV if there was a single big city with 200 characters to talk to, rather than 20 towns with the same copy pasted 10 npcs.
>>3801230 (OP) I really wonder why RPGs never set themselves around a single city with a big countryside to explore and layered city sectors and districts that unlock as things happen such as rebuilding bridges, clearing out rubble from a cannonball attack during a cutscene that blocks an entire half of the city and so on.
>>3801277 It's not that common in FF games though, I assume due to global transport like ships, airships, etc.
Solution is to make infinite scroll seas, storm barriers, etc to simulate trying to cross the Atlantic in your dinghy.
Also the plot needs some massaging due to global threats, crystals, etc. You could down scale the crystals to being local/regional geological-spiritual phenomena.
>>3801231 Mostly because Lord of the Rings is a huge journey across many different lands, and nearly every Fantasy after that wanted to emulate it, down to traveling with a party of varied yet balanced individuals
