Why (mostly) only FF games had this?
Personally liked this nifty thing.

Lufia 2 has it. I remember because killing your own party is one of the ways to beat the Master Jelly at the bottom of the Ancient Cave

One was having a way around "reflect"

That boss sucks. Time limit gimmick shit. Loved the roguelike dungeon though.

Yeah, it's cruel to put a 3 turn time limit boss at the end of a multi-hour roguelike dungeon that you had to play in one sitting back in the day. Can use save states now for a break, but the only option back then was leaving the power on and walking away.

Worst part is they don't even warn you that the boss has a time limit beforehand.

Same here. I spent more time on it than the main game I think.

I think in FFX hitting your pals was a good cure to snap them out of confusion and sleep? I remember doing that once or twice

this is most ffs. damage doesnโ€™t cure confusion in 3 for some reason. but they also have elemental health gain. so you can equip some chest with lightning absorption and lightning bolt your dude or whatever for a heal.

Souzinengi V had some applications like inflicting berserk on own characters on purpose, or even crazy strategies like buffing the enemy's status resistance to negate its own debuff dispelling

Lufia 2 had a bunch of bugs. Basically the game only checks to see if you ended the battle before he fled, but doesn't bother checking if you died or not in the fight. So as long as the battle ends before the Master Jelly flees, you get the reward.

This sounds like an extremely dumb oversight.
I get that the boss can't hurt you, but it shouldn't be too hard to check whether the boss actually died or the party did.

The slime fully heals your party and it's actually just barely possible to suicide the party even with good weapons and zero armor. They probably tried to have three possibilities (win, lose, flee) and ran into problems so they made it "impossible" to lose, but not impossible enough.

It's too powerful. Confusion often results in a game over in FFs.

That has more to do with design where player characters have very high damage output compared to their own max health than it has to do with Confuse being intrinsically too strong

I'm not sure about other FFs, but V has a staff that heals if you hit your dudes. There are also shenanigans with reflect to get past enemy reflect.
