I like the games with tenser's transformation
you just instantly become equivalent to a same level fighter. And the big restriction is that you can't cast magic... kind of like a same level fighter

I mean if you want a serious answer, the three main reasons you wouldn't play one in a vidya are:
>I don't like magic
>I want extra challenge or variety
>I think the way magic is implemented in this game sucks
If none of those are true, yeah, there's basically no fucking reason not to. Tabletop has many ways to moderate the caster supremacy and even there it runs into the issue in many ways, though not to the same extent - if you play with a halfway decent group and GM who care about pacing you won't get to dictate rests whenever you feel like just to always be at your best, for example. Unless you play a full caster only game, which is fucking hilarious, if you enjoy fully embracing power fantasy.
Video games lack most of the possible shortcomings. At most, you end up with the thief/rogue/whatever being a living lockpick and trap disarming machine, since it's usually still marginally easier to just keep one around than cast the requisite spells... but the games ALWAYS provide you with one of those, since a Fighter equivalent needs one too, so fucking lmao, you know?

Aesthetics are the only reason. Mages are superior in every game, but heavy armor looks so badass. That's why I like WH40k so much. Can be a psyker in giant power armor with a chainsaw.

Fully agreed. But it's not JUST that heavy armor looks better, it's that the lighter you go the shittier the options. You can sometimes get medium and light with style, but robes and equivalents? Pretty much guaranteed to look like absolute dogshit.
In large part responsible for my fondness for hybrids, too, as I refuse to look like some loser in an oversized bathrobe.

(Note: depending on the game these may not actually take turns or may take equivalent turns to the other classes without any downsides)

I want to be able to do cool stuff without wasting time setting it up, or worrying about running out of cool stuff. Yeah wizards can do more cool stuff, but I don't want to take the time to chant a bunch of mumbo jumbo to get strong or forget to pack mana potions. I just want to walk up to things and punch them with max strength. Gets the job done just as well most of the time, even if wizards are technically better.

Playing as magic users is fun when you want variety though.

I don't care about mages as a whole, but I fucking love summoners specifically. Of course they have the paradox in videogames where they're at once busted (because of breaking the action economy and all) and not nearly as cool as in tabletop (because you never cover all the potential uses of summons, negotiating with outsiders, or even most non-combat utility of it).

Maybe reputation wise but most games award more powerful spells and magic items to evil characters. There isnโ€™t a single rpg where using necromancy is viewed as a โ€˜goodโ€™ action. Hence power gaming will always place your character at neutral or evil.

It's fascinating to meet someone from the mirror world, how are things over there?
No but really, I wish you were right, but shitty rewards are the second most common complaint about evil options in video games, right after 'why is it just being a retard'. In the vast majority of cases being good nets you more XP, more unique rewards, and more additional content, while being evil gives you... utterly meaningless currency.

Hi! Here in the mirror world, we have:

- MnM 6 and 7 where being evil is the only way to get the gamebreaking spell "SHarpmetal".
- Pathfinder: Kingmaker where "Staff of Wispering Souls" is a must-have for powerful int-based caster builds that gives extremely rare "profane" +4 to INT for evil characters. Also, best advisor Vordakai and the Demon Vault sidequest.
-BG 1 and 2 where committing evil acts is a shortcut to powerful equipment and where evil companions are almost always stronger that good ones.
- Gothic where assaulting random people gives you best equipment and a lot of spare cash.
- ToME where committing evil unlocks best classes and features in the game.
- Eschalon Book I where the only way to get the best weapon is through cold murder and double-crossing (as well as getting praised by the developer for committing a massacre at the very end). In other 2 books evil saves a lot of headache too.

The problem with gishes is that they almost always become just casters, sooner or later. Even one of the possible D&D definitions for the term (in the mechanical sense, not the 'gith-specific concept') is that a proper gish achieves, one way or another, as close to full BAB and spellcasting progression as possible. The problem with that is that the situations where making use of the martial half is better than just standing back and unleashing arcane power are so rare as to be virtually meaningless long-term.
Sure, you have a trump card if someone thinks they can just fuck you over with antimagic, immunities, spell resist/saves... but 99% of the time you'll be a wizard who happens to have a sword.
I mean yeah, obviously you can CHOOSE to mix it up for enjoyment, that's a given, but when it comes to efficiently solving problems...

For me, it's because I have a weird attachment to classes that use HP as a resource, and that's usually a martial.
Not always though. I mean there's DAO blood mage, and PoE blood mage, and... several other blood mages, but it's not the standard.
