What’s the consensus on this one?
I’ve heard the Remastered version takes after the PC version, which adjusted the way grinding and enemy scaling works compared to the 360 original.
Is it worth giving this a try? I never bothered with the original release because of the aforementioned scaling situation and the apparently very bad in-game tutorials/explanations for battle mechanics.

This is one of the weakest games Square's SaGa team ever output. (I guess it's better than Unlimited SaGa at least)
It's literally only known because the PC version is superior to the console version which was rare for a Japanese game from the era.
If that fact didn't signal boost it, it would be forgotten.

It's extremely good. Huge, open world to explore - something like 80-90% of the content and game world are optional. The combat system and character building mechanics are very fun and unique. You build multiple units composed of up to five characters; each turn, the units do moves known by the individual characters within the unit. There's a ton of thought and strategy that goes into making effective units, and it's very fun.

It has a pretty bad equipment system, though. You have to hunt for materials in order to upgrade items, which is incredibly tedious. Easily the worst part of the game - you cannot do this without a guide.

The story and characters are also extremely bad. You spend 90% of the game exploring the world and doing quests, which are pretty cool, but the 10% spent on plot is wretched.

It's a very cool game that successfully experiments with combat mechanics and builds a really compelling world. I think you'd enjoy it if you're into SaGa stuff, open world RPGs, or RPGs that attempt new things.

I actually had a ton of fun modding the game and diving into the mechanics all function. Just be prepared to die a lot while you're figuring out how to improve at the game, autosave is your best friend here.

It's garbage. The only people sick enough to like it are the people who like Saga games.

It punishes you for doing normal RPG stuff, has insane requirements to get certain events or party members, and explains almost nothing about how the systems in the game works which can in fact soft lock you from beating the game after you've already put in tens of hours.

Stay far away.

Filtered by the level scaling. Is it some world difficulty?

I played it last year on the Seam Deck and really liked it. The combat animations were extremely cool and fluid and unlike others I liked the characters and the story. Rush grew on me during the game.
I used Japanese audio with English subtitles and the walkthrough on the Wiki for the first time.

It's fun but frustrating at the same time. Many of the mechanics are obtuse and poorly explained, and for some mechanics you can go through the entire game without realizing that they exist (like leveling formations), as well as mechanics that are obvious once you notice them but which are never mentioned ingame (like tight formations being vulnerable to AoE damage). The difficulty curve is also pretty retarded, you'll go from easy fights to getting your balls busted at the drop of a hat, and there are a few bosses that will make you go FUCK YOU HOW IS THAT FAIR until you figure out the right tactics. I won't even go into the optional bosses which are ridiculous.

The story is pretty mid but it does have some good moments, and similarly most of the characters are bland but there are a few cool ones (plus the roster is massive so you can pick your favorites). The main character is half-retarded and goes through most of the game not understanding what the fuck is going on. I do dig the character designs but in terms of personality it's more miss than hit. The worldbuilding is decent but visually it's mostly bland as well outside of the cities.

The story/boss fights are where the game really shines, especially once you start getting a feel for the combat mechanics. It looks great (considering its age) and setting up combos and shit to dominate enemies is a lot of fun. Character building is neat as well, it's mostly a passive "the skills you use a lot get stronger" system but you can guide how characters develop and focus on different skill groups, which also influences how characters act in combat. In the orignal PC version there was also a simple hack (literally just change one line in a text file) to let you equip all your units rather than hoping they ask you to give them items. I don't know if that still works in the remastered version though.

The remaster doesn't punish grinding like the original console versions but it's still not a grinding game.

So he's a true avatar of the player who doesn't get half the rules at all. Clever.

I never played the original console/PC versions. I've only found conflicting information, so is it true that AoE only affects your squads currently engaged with the enemy performing it in the original? It seems to affect everyone regardless of where they are on the field in the remaster.

it's unlisted on steam so either you pirate it or buy a product key from key seller site. I bought a key few years ago for 20 bucks, no idea what they go for now.
