Both. In release order. And then you keep going until you hit 3, and then you can stop.
4 had some neat ideas but is a fundamentally broken game, and 5 is awful and not worth your time playing (the only good thing is the music, which is consistently fantastic across the series).

First game was better than 2 for me. Lots of good memories with it. ACF was good too but I didn't finish, gotta go back and replay it.

2 was still good though.

I've heard great things about 3 so I'll play that one day as well.

Wild Arms was a 10/10 masterpiece and the sequels have no understanding of any of its qualities.
