I nearly finished octopath 1 but got bored, the repetitive structure just wore me out.
Why even bother having 8 different stories if they all play out exactly the same.
Also the dungeons are more basic than stuff from from the fucking nes.

It felt like replaying the first, slow opening hours of an RPG eight times over. And then after you do that, you don't even get an expansive midgame, you go straight to the endgame. Great music, great gameplay, some fun characters, but the structure was seriously misconceived.

I found the writing very weak, entire setting and all characters bland and generic af.

It shines of course for its graphical style. And before Expidition 33 it was the freshest take we'd seen on trad rpg's in quite a while. But 80$? Nigga please. Its biggest appeal is that it feels like a 16 bit rpg with modern bells and whistles. Its streamlined and delivers fun quickly and does away with most of the drag that early rpgs were known for.

Cons:
-having to do 8 prologues is horrible. The beginning sucks because of this
-boring characters and story, but you can just skip cutscenes
-can be a bit grindy
-having to go around to each person in town to see what skills they had for Hikari/items throne can steal is tiresome
-not really balanced well. Hikari is super op and easily the best choice for starter character. He hard carries
-sea feels kinda small and the dungeons a bit to bite sized
-the setting is well executed but dull. Theirs no interesting lore or anything unique about the world is super generic.
-to long/over stays it's welcome

This is what happens with Octopath. The game isn't horrendous, but it relies completely on your tolerance with the gameplay formula because the nature of the game's presentation makes the story and characters less interesting as your progress. Once the illusion of any sort of actual plot or cohesive setting fades away, the only thing left is the combat, and you can only get excited about boosting so many times.

both games are extremely generic, but i honestly enjoyed myself playing through both of them. the world exploration is fun, if samey (every corridor is almost guaranteed to have a connected dungeon or town, every dungeon is explored the exact same way by just going through all the branching paths for chests, etc.) but i feel like the atmosphere always makes up for it. combat system is fun, job system is cute, but most fights get a bit formulaic because of how non-adaptable your kit is, you kinda just have to use the same moves all the time.

8.5/10 games for me though, i hope they make it so that the writing quality for every chapter in future games is as high as hikari's chapter 3 was

They wanted to make the same kind of game as the first, and tell stories which are unlike normal JRPG stuff, but the feedback said make more power of friendship, rote character "growth", oddball party grows to love each other vanilla bullshit. The individual stories are nice and the combat is great, but the game is hideous and having to read 8 short stories simultaneously chapter by chapter is an insane demand that completely ruins the pacing of every story.

The graphics and structure made me turn off the game once I realized that's how it worked AND after I tried doing a solo dancer run just to see if it could work and I got to the point where the only way to get better equipment was making death runs through a bug cave hoping for no encounters and 100% flees. I gave up. Horribly stupid design that completely ruins a great game. It's baffling.

Her own character figure from the collector edition shows she has a full-on feline snout shape instead of an anime girl face and the sketch for that figure shows the modelers made her mouth much smaller than it's meant to be. Given that her own designers requested for her to have a muzzle and if you take into account that her mouth is supposed to go fully around it than that face is pretty accurate aside from the philtrum.

The first game is mediocre at best, while my first party had a decent mix of challenge and I tried to engage with the stories I had a hard time giving a shit about the narratives, which range from average to dogshit. But even given that I actually like the art style mix and the gameplay but I definitely understand for non rpg fans why they disliked it. Octopath 2 basically is a direct upgrade mechanically and tries a little more by having character's stories interact. I do like the series overall but my biggest issue would have to be the lack of cohesive narrative or character interactions. It makes it feel like 8 people are on a journey and not that you have a cohesive group. I do hope they experiment more going forward story wise because they have far more misses than even mediocre stories.
