As a Jew it's nice to see Jewish representation in the Final Fantasy series.

Dr.Tot was a surviving mole summoner tribe member Garland thought he destroyed in Esto Gaza. They summoned through jewels. Unlike the "horned' tribe of Madain Sari.
They removed Dagger's horn as a baby to replace deceased Princess Garnet. She learned the jewel summoning technique from Tot.

In Final Fantasy Unlimited there were also 2 different summoning techniques: "Soil" and "Mist".

Moles are of course sensitive to light, since they are subterranean. Dr. Tot travels from Treno to Alexandra by underground tunnels. And Treno is a city of perpetual night.

His name in Japanese is more like "Totto".
Possibly inspired by The Wizard of Oz.

Garnet has ruby shoes, like Dorothy Gale.
Steiner is the tin man
Zidane is the lion.
Vivi is the scarecrow.

Freya, and the Burmecians are mice people. They're not in the Wizard of Oz movies, but they lived under the Poppy fields.

Armarant would be a Quadling.
Quina is a "China" doll.
Eiko would be a munchkin.

Of course FF8 had its own influences of Wizard of Oz. With it's Wicked Witch of the West. Rinoa, and her little dog too.

Of course the point of Wizard of Oz was to get back home. FF9 had a stronger "homecoming" theme than FF8.
FF7 meanwhile had a "reunion".

Rebirth also talked a "homecomings". But I'm skeptical about the translation.

Esthar in FF8 almost had a "yellow brick road" as well.

"Ozma" was the lost princess/Queen of Oz, but she didn't debut until L. Frank Baum's second book. The Marvelous Land of Oz. She's a bit of a Mary Sue. She's part fairy so she can do magic, and casts a spell over the land, to not only make Oz invisible to outsiders, but it also stops aging and illness, except for evil people. It's cheesy.

In FF9, it's implied that Ozma is an Eidolon from another world. Possibly Terra or one of the worlds Terra assimilated.

In FF14, Ozma appears again as a spherical construct, but said to be the Magic City's defense system. It's a remnant of the time of the War of the Magi. The City of Nym (scholars) vs the City of Mhach (Void Mages)
Nym would fall to a disease call the "Green Death", which actually turned them into tonberries, who lived a very long time.

The concept of tonberries as mutants of an old civilization appeared in FF11 as well. This might have been an idea seeded in FF8. Tonberries appear in the Centra Ruins, which has similar upside-down pyramid architecture as Nym.

Tonberries appear in FF9's Ipsen's Castle. And in FF7 Rebirth there's a whole lore segment related to Alexander, iirc.

One had a lot of water, supposedly.
I think one of the worlds Terra assimilated was a water world with primitive life. Ordinarily the Terrains would have passed by Gaia because it had civilizations. But Terra was old, desperate.

Tonberries are meant to be a fish monster. They're like lantern fish, or angler fish.

In FF11 the tonberries were originally the first summoners, the Kuluu.
The Kuluu were a branch of the first race, the Zilart. But they lacked the "whisper of the soul" aka telepathy. They had something else, "Emptiness" which they used to summon Avatars.

It's a confusing named. "Emptiness" is an actual substance. The normie Zilart felt threatened by the summoning art. So they created extraction chambers, and stored the "emptiness" in silos like nuclear waste. Without it they couldn't summon. These would be the towers seen around the plains where the Tarutaru live.
In FF11, there was a "meltdown" event. It had nothing to do with their "Emptiness" waste sites. But it created a kind of nuclear winter, killing off most of the life on the planet, mutating the Kuluu into tonberries. They might have mutated into other beastmen as well, but it's not explicitly stated. But beastmen sport the same job classes which includes summoners.

Things got pretty dire. So Diabolos appeared, offering an escape to another realm, Dynamis.

Theia had water and it's unclear where it has this water from AFAIK. Planet collisions were a thing 3bln years or so ago, but are now rare. Question is, how rare 'sentient' life is.

We should just say "consciousness" instead "sentience" and "life".

FF14:Endwalker puts the remnants of other worlds on exhibit. They all succumb to despair and depression, unable to find a reason to carry on.
There was a race that learned all there is to know. They ran out of things to learn, and there was no stopping the inevitable heat death of the universe. So they basically committed suicide.
Then there was a cybernetic race (Who created Omega Weapon), who perpetually enhanced themselves, reasoning that they'd eventually encounter a stronger race they'd have to fight. Self-improvement was their primary drive. But once there was no one else to be better than, they just sorta went dormant.

In FF16, Omega was created by the Fallen to fight off the Ultimas. The developers only went with Omega to give FF16 more familiar and traditional series elements. Initially they wanted the final boss for the Echoes DLC to be a new concept.
It will likely end up being central to FF17,
In the year 2525, if man is still alive
