Trying for the third time to make it through this game. The first time I tapped out when I was sneaking in to take Bart's kingdom back. Second time was when I was in that floating city. This game really just isn't fun but I feel obligated to get through it. The mech segments are fucking AWFUL.

I like JRPGs but Xenogears is extremely slow. Movement is slow, combat is slow, even the text boxes move very slowly.

>To know the vintage and quality of a wine one need not drink the whole cask. It must be perfectly easy in half an hour to say whether a book is worth anything or worth nothing. Ten minutes are really sufficient, if one has the instinct for form. Who wants to wade through a dull volume? One tastes it, and that is quite enough-- more than enough, I should imagine.

Oscar Wilde would have loved Xenogears because he was a sodomite.

Yeah my first time I made it to the open world. I think I was headed to a desert city. It was so slow that I lost interest and put it down. I'm honestly shocked this is so widely considered a classic as I've never played a slower game and I still don't buy that even back then people had attention spans long enough to like this game.

It's not about attention span, there are plenty of puzzle game and point 'n click enthusiasts. The main problem is that the gameplay is straight up garbage.

It's a game I'm glad I played through for the first time on emulator. Especially towards the end, the random encounter rate is so fucking high that the already slogginess of combat/everything just gets amplified even more.

The mech segments is just spam the same combo all game, not that engaging but kinda cool at first. Either way, disc 2 onwards ruined the story and intrigue for me and severely dampened my thoughts on everything. I don't care that they ran out of time, the end result is still bad. I won't spoil anything obviously, but yeah, no bueno.

Remember zoomies that when we grew up playing the game and couldn't emulate it was easier to digest the slower pace. The game is wonderful for its story more than anything. It's really, really, really well done, and is probably the best JRPG story to date. I like other games more overall for various reasons but Xenogears is peak in terms of storytelling and lore.

Also the combat was interesting at the time, different from typical turn-based play. It's similar to Legend of Legaia for anybody who likes the combat. Oh and Legaia is fucking slow. Worse than Xenogears. Emulate and speed up a bit.

>zoomies
I'm OP and I'm 35. I think I've gotten much less tolerant of dragging cutscenes as I've gotten older, the slow pace of the text boxes are brutal.

Hell no. It reads fucking awful, it's very flawed stylistically. No idea if it's the fault of the original script or the translator, but every damn sentence reads clunky and unwieldy.

double lol

the game that famously turns into a slideshow and lore dumps due to timing/pacing issues is the greatest JRPG story? you're insane.
