I gave it a pass the first time round. Partially because it looked like it was pandering too hard to the nostalgia crowd but mainly because the mecha side looked like a stupid gimmick. But it seems the game's done well enough that the devs decide to pump out some DLC several years after its release.

So, does it hold up to scrutiny?

The mechanics are okay, but that story is...not particularly great, faintly echoing Xenogears. Soundtrack was lovely, though. I figured that someone would have tried the DLC by now since it just came out, but guess not.

My friend liked it a lot but hes also known to enjoy slop. For me it was missing something, definitely didnt like the characters and the story almost caught my interest but it was too slow with a lot of exposition which isnt a problem in itself but it definitely could have better writing.

It is hard to combine all those beloved games into one game indeed. Fans of those games also have crazy standards of storytelling, which is why there are lots of bitter comments calling out its writing. Personally unless they can give an alternative that does everything better than Chained Echoes I wouldnt accept those unwarranted bashing.

I appreciated that the Sea of Stars DLC added minigames and upped the puzzle quality, but I hate it being free for baiting me into playing more of that dogshit. Choosing to poorly ape Persona 4 for the DLC plotline using characters who didn't have personalities to begin with certainly was a choice.

I really don't get it. I do get that most people suck at anything. There's a structure for stories and pretty much any story has been told a thousand times, so it's known what works and what doesn't. Stick to the basics, what's so hard about it?

- Glenn is rebuffed by Celestia several times before the big reveal because she's suspicious that Glenn was the cuck (is still cold to him after the reveal too, the whole "lesson" the game tries to teach about life being being defined by actions and not by past lives kinda falls apart given her attitude)
- Glenn literally has a melty and falls in to a coma upon realizing he was the cuck and not the bull in all of those flashbacks, so the party has to explore his mind for an hour to save him
