Why can't I let it go and more importantly how can I let it go and what can fill this void?

the D Counter in Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter.

Aka putting the entire game on a time limit and using dragon mode speeds up the counter. So it's a Breath of Fire game that punishes you if you use Dragon Mode.

I think there is one other decision that Capcom made in a Dragon game thats a contender for the worst. The stick swivel in DD1 when you're grabbed by a monster. You have to deliberately damage you're own thumbstick to get out of a grapple. For me thats worse than DD2's timed post-game.

I don't really understand why you are underwhelmed by DD2. If you liked DD1, then the sequel is that but it's actually complete. There aren't huge areas of the map that are just blank, for example. It's gorgeous, it's satisfying, it's complete. It isn't underwhelming at all, it's an exquisite adventure game.
But it is not an RPG.
You don't have to force yourself to do something you don't want to do. You don't have to feel guilty for enjoying something. There is nothing wrong with enjoying something. You aren't experiencing a void. You're experiencing an internalized anti-fun toxicity which has infected you from outside of yourself. For example, from 4chan telling you that everything sucks. Everything doesn't suck.
It's ok to like what you like, and you don't need fucking zoomers on 4chan to give you permission to like things.

While I don't feel quite as strongly as you I think DD is full of unrealized potential. 1 felt like the skeleton of a great game and 2 didn't add enough meat to the frame to make me happy after a decade of waiting. I still LIKE it, but there's a longing in me for the "perfect" Dragon's Dogma game that we will probably never see because Itsuno is gone.

That being said I'm still huffing copium that 2's DLC will function as a similar bump in quality like Dark Arisen did for 1.

Dropped it before the coronation. I expected the story to be mid because that´s kind of normal for an exploration focused game but my problem with it is that there are only very few noteworthy areas that are not generic caves so everything becomes repetitive pretty fast.

Fights also are not nearly as epic as the ones from the original game either even though lots of the monsters are the same. Quests and NPCs are also lacking. I´m sorry, i didn´t care about some guy being poisoned at a church or whatever.

Everything feels so aimless and purposeless...

Yea I think this exact thing affected my enjoyment of the game on replays. Everyone on 4chan said the game was "ass" or "undercooked" or whatever. I think its better than base dd1, but not Dark Arisen, i'm not gonna let other anons affect my enjoyment of the game anymore. I would go as far as to say that the core combat of DD2 is the best in all of gaming, just DD1 but better(which was already the best) particularly with mods.

Exactly my point. Dd2 could've been an instant classic selling 10 millions, if the devs would've only focused on the low hanging fruit. Pretty sure they were to comfortable in their positions, so they stopped caring soon.

I don't remember seeing anything reused from the first game. There's a lot of goblins, sure, but there's many types of goblins and they aren't the only type of creature you'll find while running around. There's a wider variety of "boss monsters". And there's definitely nowhere in the world you can go where there isn't something interesting. I have logged more than a thousand hours playing it and EVERY TIME I turned the game on... I'm not exaggerating... every single fucking time... I discovered some new little dungeon somewhere, some new piece of equipment I'd never seen before, some new creature I hadn't seen before.
The first half of the game you'll be fighting your way through goblins and bandits frequently and then getting ambushed by a griffon or minotaur or cyclops or something. But if you go out at night everything's different with multiple types of undead and undead bosses joining the mix and all monsters are stronger.
More importantly, does it feel repetitive? I don't think so. The changing terrain environment, all by itself, makes encounters dynamic, and you'll need to escort NPCs sometimes and so on. This is an action / adventure game, you know. So you're supposed to want action while you adventure... that means you'll be fighting a lot when you're exploring in places where there are monsters.

Not OP but it sounds like you're projecting. OP isn;t guilty and is open about enjoying their modded version, their issue lies in the fact they believe the game could have been so much more and they know they'll never see it reach its 'full potential'.

It's true but Elden Ring hits pretty damn close. I was never a DS player and die hard DD OG but ER >>> DD2 if I'm being honest.
I wish they had stuck to the DD:DA formula more, DD2 felt watered down from that. The Sphinx boss was amazing but everything else is downhill from it, the Mystic Lance guy was a sidegrade from Mystic Knight too somehow, and too many cheesy invulnerability modes kinda took the fun out of it.

All of the hallmarks of an adventure or an expedition are absent completely from Souls games and theyre more akin, thematically, to you being a cursed dreg from the outset- theres no joy or beauty or obligation or anything. you just fight.

From what I've seen, DD2 improved melee classes that were garbage in the OG game. But they forgot that people played the game because of the post-game. Everfall and UR-dragon grind. They kind of didn't understand that people criticized Rise for its lack of current endgame content. Yes, sales were front loaded and MH is bigger than DD, which allows MH to receive more content in the future. But OG DD had a lot of content before BBI. They really think that going from one quest to another is fun, gate gear in quests, and “epic” set pieces like Grigori or Griffon are why people continued to play DD. And not because the game had a lot of post-game content. In DD1, I was about to give up on the game until I said “fuck it” and did the whole main quest and got to the post-game. It went from a boring game to something really fun. Also, without hard mode, which is infinitely more fun than normal, and Speed-Run mode. DD2 hates its players, and the game also looks ugly and overpriced.

DD2 is packed full of dungeons, though? There's even several "above ground" dungeons like the misty forest area or the mountain ravine area where the sphinx goes after you solve her first few riddles. Most of them aren't super-long ten hour crawls with puzzles and traps and shit, but it's an adventure hack-and-slash game, not a Zelda puzzler / platformer.

DD2 does have a "post-game", though... It's not so secret anymore. It's not ugly, it's an achingly *beautiful* low-fantasy world. It literally gives a painful sense of nostalgia or loss because I've never seen another game do a setting like that. TES is wacky comedy ultra-hyper-magic bullshit. Zelda is extremely specific and anime. All the Pathfinder and D&D games are hyper-magic, too. Melee in OG was terrible. Very slow, vulnerable, and with garbage skills. Hybrid classes, aka bow classes, were the superior classes. To the point that they had the best skills in the game. The meta in the game is to use Assassin and switch to whatever build you want to create. And that includes Warrior, MK, and Fighter. DD2's slower-paced combat and improved skills made Melee viable without cheese strategies. Still, bow classes are still the best DD2 classes.

Fighter was a strong vocation and better at swords than assassin, strider was at its strongest when it was up close with enemies (it's literally the dagger class, the short bow is your weaker secondary weapon, not your main form of offence), and MK was also a very strong vocation because of its strong skills. You can't transfer assassin's unique skills to other classes. You only stay assassin and switch if you want to optimise attack damage. That has nothing to do with other classes being weak, and it has everything to do with assassin having the highest base attack stat growth in the game. If you actually want to optimise your melee then you one 100% need to also get fighter and warrior's augments for better damage, defences, and knockdown reduction. Assassin has rather mediocre augments all things considered, unless you're doing a solo run. Especially since they were nerfed in Dark Arisen.

And that all only applies to attack-maxing physical vocations. If you want to maximise your magical power you player sorcerer then switch. Because sorcerer has the highest magic attack growth, not because everything else is awful (I mean MA arguably has awful stat growth, but the vocation itself is good).

And to add because I'm too braindead to make a single consolidated post, mage/sorcerers are slower than melee classes, and fighters can not only block/parry much of what comes their way, but they also have multiple skills giving them i-frames. Warrior was fun but it really was the worst class. Fewer skills, massive wind-ups that, unlike sorcerer, couldn't be moved so you could charge up your arc of deliverance and it's ruined by the enemy moving slightly. Fewer unique skills, massively slowly attack speeds that were better if you cheesed them by jumping.

I beat the game with it, but it was several steps below the design of everything else, for whatever reason.

You're handicapping yourself without dagger classes. I spent a long time running around in my first full game playthrough. Now that I've learned cutting wind, I use daggers for about 90% of my playthroughs. I only switch if I want some arguments and want to level up shit. DD really screwed up by making a unique skill better than a universal skill.
