>they nerfed Lotus completely to the dirt
It's so over
>>2040557>Serpent didn't fare much betterMy beloved Bandit.
Waited to buy this on sale ever since the EA was announced on Steam. It now costs over 50% more than it was on full price in EA.
Does the game still require insane micro skills for multiplayer?
>>2040555 (OP)>endless early accessHow do you dear to criticize one of the many ways to attack the evil AAA companies.
>>2040555 (OP)Campaign balance is whacky af fr
Got really annoyed with the penultimate level and fucked it off
>>2040734Which one? Wolf or Dragon/Serpent? I only played early Dragon and all Serpent. Serpent have it had early because they need the Muskets but once you get them you shouldn't have any problems with anything. Dragon have it easy early because the Archers are so good, but you have to fight a lot of Lotus I assume.
Ronin are better than Swordsmen now?
>>2040708I doubt anyone here plays multiplayer
>>2040555 (OP)Battle Realms & Metal Fatigue are two great and innovative RTSs with ideas literally nobody ever recreated, which released around the same time, got cucked by Warcraft III and both had terrible marketing, starting with the name.
I am the only one who played both as a kid in the early 2000s. While BR eventually got its semi remaster and now it's super popular, Metal Fatigue remains forgotten & obscure, destroyed by Mandalorian Gamer...
>>2041112i played AoM:Retold multiplayer once (quite recently) and I cried myself to sleep afterwards
the only fond memories of RTS games was playing BR with friends over Hamachi
then I played AoE3 (original release) with friends over hamachi once and friendship was over
>>2041725I mean currently. /vst/ is more about flexing their turtling skills against the AI
Lotus 2nd tier are creepy as shit and i'm tired of pretending they're not
>>2041965Their lore is cool af doe
>>2041112how does Battle Realms multiplayer even work anyway? I feel like everything happens too fast
>>2042152RTS in general are fast, and just like any other, you'll get rushed and it can go either way.
If both players are good it goes into a long game.
Though due to the constant peasant generation, rushers aren't punished as hard compared to other RTS, I believe.
>>2042176I made the mistake of playing at 'normal' speed during single player and then when I fought against a friend we played on the fastest speed and it was quite fast. like really fucking fast
>>2042357>>2042152lol i tried this game for the first a few years ago, well past my prime gaming years and in one of the early missions, i couldn't for the life of me beat it. it was a simple "destroy all enemy buildings" objective, i think i destroyed like 6 or 7 bases, but every time somehow there was something left on the map and the enemy managed to rebuild a base somewhere else lightning fast and start pumping out units, so i was just running around playing whack-a-mole until i just gave up like an hour in, bored, but incapable of actually finishing the mission.
never had anything like that happen to me with any other game in my life and it still feels surreal, but you're not the only one who thought this game is weirdly fast
>>2042402>something left on the map and the enemy managed to rebuild a base somewhere else lightning fast and start pumping out unitsGod, that also happened to me many, many times when I was a kid. It's as if the campaign AI and skirmish AI share the same scripting. I had to spend hours scouring the map because the LOS for units is very limited in this game. Still managed to beat the game as the Serpent, musketeers + explosive shot combo can wipe out buildings in seconds.
>>2042176>Though due to the constant peasant generation, rushers aren't punished as hard compared to other RTS, I believe.Don't the free peasants kind of make rushing harder though? I remember seeing multiplayer footage on youtube from "pros" and it seems like a strategy to actually use peasants to engage the enemy when they rush you, because you have the home turf advantage thanks to faster spawning peasants and the peasants tying enemies down in combat.
>>2042660Depends the rush. Raiders for example are very mobile and really hard to trap with peasants.
And if you do, your economy is already shit, and your opponent just keeps spamming swordmen, until you're done.
I haven't played zen online yet though, I may be out of the loop, but back then the biggest issue was how unbalanced and how everyone just rushed.
Long games were kind of unusual in PvP.
Does the Zen Edition let you actually learn the weaknesses strengths in the game on the fly, like AoE with mouse hover over unit + encyclopedia anytime?
>>2040654i was waiting for a promo too and the price just doubled on steam
>>2041364While I liked Metal Fatigue it had a lot of problems. Being early 3D did not do it any favors with its lifeless style.
The Combots and sky/land/underground was great tho.
Remember when they wanted to turn it into a Hearthstone-like (Western gatcha game)?
>>2043553Yeah, they even made a Kickstarter for that.
>>2043161The weaknesses are shown with bronze, silver and gold when hovering over an enemy unit.

am I just irrational about liking Dragon? is Dragon simply not that good even though I like it?
i've played this game long ago and finished the Dragon campaign, and today i pirated it to maybe try the Serpent campaign, and I'm really not entirely sure if I should like the Serpent clan over Dragon. very soulful game, regardless.
>>2044440No? Dragons a bit more basic in concept but overall its fine.
>>2044440Dragon is perfectly okay in singleplayer, they just have a really tough time in multiplayer. In singleplayer, there is nothing the AI can do vs mass archers, usually.
The soundtrack is peak, some of the themes are unforgettable. Especially for Serpent and Dragon.

Can you still turn Berserkers with Shale Armor into Werevolves with full health once the Berserkers are low on HP/about to die if you are a micro gigachad who can use the blessings mid battle to overwrite the BG and then activate the BG?
>>2044814why do they have a tough time in multiplayer?
>>2045512In Zen Edition, it might no longer be a problem, in fact I'm almost sure they balanced it, but the best options Dragon had in the base game (with dev patches released at the time) were easily countered by the Lotus Dark Canopy Death Ball. And their matchups versus Wolf wasn't that better either, even though they had no cheese strats to counter, it was more how the resistances lined up. Berserkers with Shale Armor had no weaknesses other than Blunt and the Dragon clan had a severe lack of bluntness in its arsenal. And their cutting resistant units would get shredded by Pitch Slingers. So for Wolf they could just go unga bunga.

What a stupid change. Literally every time in AoE2 I want to move out my units I use Patrol (before attack move) or Attack Move, because literally nobody wants move unless it's to disengage when you send units on the map you want them to start attacking not ignore enemy and move and die.

>The Geisha's innate stamina regeneration -according to the data- is named 'Seduction.' It is hard-coded to be applicable to her only. Perhaps the Geisha had been intended to attract and distract enemy fighters (who before WotW were all males).
Would be based if male troops got distracted by Geisha but then if they defeat them they do some forceful hanky panky, but I dunno if Lotus units have functional penises

>>2072948try attacking one of them immediately, getting a base with a decent rice patch is important
>>2073895i lowered the game difficulty and speed
for some reason i don't really understand what the Serpent clan is all about and what makes them competitive with other clans
>>2074802>Serpent clan is all aboutMass muskets, that's what they're all about. You should have Musketeers and both battle gears for them no?
>>2074958both battlegears? wow
>>2074959The sniper one is enough if you don't want to make both but the second battle gear is (or at least was) good vs buildings.
>>2074961the hard AI beelines into ranged units and my musketeers get slaughtered very quickly while my melee units just desperately try to defend them (and get ignored)
>>2074962So the unit AI no longer automatically engages in melee when they run past a melee unit?
>>2074966no they really beeline to the ranged and the geisha
>>2074971sorry, and to add, if you run your ranged unit away from the enemy melee unit and a friendly melee unit is tying up the enemy melee unit, the enemy melee unit will still persist and chase after the ranged unit. it's really hard to keep musketeers alive.
So Wolf should dominate the singleplayer Meta then right? They don't need any of their ranged units, and Pitch Slinger is decent in melee too (or at least he was with the old weaknesses). Serpent should be unplayable, Lotus slow, Dragon lose out on mass archers but Samurai should be OP now. So Wolf > Dragon >> Lotus >> Serpent?

Post your tier list.
https://tiermaker.com/create/battle-realms-units-539648
This is mine based on the "original" experience with the latest patch and how easy the game is to win with said units in singleplayer
S - you always want to have in your army
F - you almost never want to have this in your army because it's an active waste of resources (i.e. Ronin, whose most permanent value in the original was the debuff from dying)
No particular meaning in the horizontal order, it's maybe alphabetical/based on the picture filenames in the sorter.
>>2077291Some of the S/A tier there are by necessity of course, the Brothers suck but you need them for Battle Gear, the ranged one is the least likely to die in combat. Some of the lower tier units are obviously better early (i.e. Chemist or Leaf Disciple for rushing). But most of the expansion units feel pointless, only Serpent and to a lesser extent Dragon got half decent ones.
>>2077291Raiders should be "B" or even "A" they are good for rushing, also crossbowman weakness bolts are decent enough to have a couple of them.
Soban's free workers ability is also really nice, should be higher.
>Summer Sale 2025

What are the upgraded women for?
>first game (skirmish)
>took me 1 hour to beat [Normal] Shinja
I set the overall game difficulty to Hard but I guess that's for campaign only or something.
Definitely the old strategies don't work anymore (mass range with a few melee to distract) but you still can use ranged units. At least on normal, it doesn't seem that enemy AI units change targets to ranged if they first engaged with melee. They also don't keep attacking Chi Shield Dragon Warriors forever, but it takes them a few seconds to change targets still.
In the end, I just got carried by Zen Master Spam and Guardians with Last Stand, against Wolf. And siege units are way more important now, or fire I suppose. Maybe I should've used Fire Swords on dragon too, because the only siege units Dragon have are ranged. Although if you do sneak in a Powder Keg with the extra ranged BG he can snipe buildings from afar with Chi Shield Dragon warriors providing sight under the tower.
I haven't played Serpent yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they are now indeed the harder campaign options.
>Menu > Help doesn't list unit armor/weaknesses & resistances, so you have to mouse over the icon in game
So stupid
What is the horse priority? Melee, because they get to use trample? Ranged units, because they can run away from melee? Or healers because they survive longer?
>>2086090>I haven't played Serpent yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they are now indeed the harder campaign options.I literally can't beat the fighting the Dragon and Wolf mission.
What does Musketeer sniper rifle even do? no more range increase, no stationary shooting...
>>2088943>I literally can't beat the fighting the Dragon and Wolf mission. How far is that after Serpentholm?
God the AI is so fucking petty in the campaigns. The peasants keep building huts all over the map even after I destroy almost all their bases.
>>2040555 (OP)I recently played War of the Ring and learnt that it was based off of this game.
>>2091430i think right after you get the Necromancer.
>>2093563Yep, I just got to that mission and I got my ass handed to me hard multiple times. I thought I got it when for some reason Shinja joined already 3 minutes into it but nope.
But at least it's not because of the Zen Edition, apparently it was the hardest mission already in Early Edition, according to gamefaqs
>>2094329it's just impossible. they have like 1 blob of units defending their base (2 of them) at all times and 1 blob each roaming the map to kill you. you can maybe with your blob win against 2 blobs but going against their bases will kill what's left of your blob
Is there a cooldown added to healing? Like a unit cannot be healed again until time passes? And how do I make Fan Geisha auto engage enemies in combat without having to spam force attack after every enemy?
Haven't tried this yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWAesgeYKr4
>ignore wolf base, harass dragon base to the south, then get holed up on top of the mountain
interesting that the AI doesn't harass the peasants gathering rice, even after it crushes the building on north.
I guess if the southern orange Dragon base never goes north to attack, it doesn't notice the hut?
>>20950592 years ago? maybe there have been some balance changes since then. i've been playing with a more recent build

>>2095589The one with the whip? That's the Channeler upgrade for Lotus. The "anti-tower" upgrade for female units in the upgraded Town Hall added in WotW.
>>2095059WEll what do you know, it actually worked. On second try doing this strategy (harass the south Dragon base), I won. I finished the south base, and then it felt like I only needed to repel one dragon and one wolf. Killed Otomo and his base second. The Wolf doesn't do much once you invade Otomo's main base.
And then THE FUCKING GAME CRASHED WHEN I PICKED THE NEXT MISSION REEEEEEE, FUCKING GIVE US AUTOSAVES BEFORE EVERY NEXT MISSION CHOCE YOU HACKS
>>2097396The next "hard" mission was surprisingly easy. Th wolf doesn't actually rush you, even though hey have 4 bases, they just do it from one side at a time. The only cancerous part of it was the grind factor and the endless towers. Only the final mission left.
So how exactly do peasants get turned into geishas?
>>2098248For the Dragon clan? They are turned into slaves who spend the rest of their life mopping the Bathhouse floor and whatnot.
For the Serpent clan? Cross-dressing men.
>Source:- Mentioned in the tutorial.
- Backed up by in-game stats (Dragon Geisha are pathetically weak and die to male peasants, like a woman should, Serpent Geisha are the strongest T1 unit in the game stat wise).
Why is this not in the game?
https://battlerealms.github.io/miniguide/
I don't want to hover over a unit's icon to see this info in a description/text box.
THere's so much space on the interface where you could display this visually.
Does Yin Blade still change Ronin damage from cutting to magical in Zen Edition?
>>2098106And it's done, finished the Serpent campaign. Last mission was even easier than the one before, even though it's annoying how the first time you leave your base with all your units they immediately attack from another side. Like 5-6 wolf bases. Luckily once you kill the wolf leader, you just have to suffer vs hordelings for like half an hour and then Nightvol appears without any cutscene and kills half your army, and then you rush him with everything you got so you can ignore the rest of the wolf.
How do you win as Lotus in the post-ranged meta?
