I try to play their other games, EU4, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, but I always return to my old favourite. And why shouldn't I? It's a deep experience without any overcomplications.

EU2 and EU4 are both better. EU3 is precisely like comparing Oblivion to Morrowind and Skyrim. The only people who like it better than the games before and after it were likely young enough that it was their first entry to the series, and so they have fond nostalgia for it.

EU2 is total dogshit and like 2 people who are still alive have ever played it. So I guess it's like Trannywind in one aspect but not the other.

I agree EU3 was the best. The mana system in EU4 was a disaster.

Is this the final form of the zoomer?
EU3 was trash, and was a downgrade in every aspect other than graphics. I doubt that you even played it, and I am absolutely certain that you never played EU2. EU2 had a soundtrack with actual sovl, it was the last game to feature real historical music and the tracks changed as you went through the ages. EU3 onwards had bleh modern soundtracks created for the game. EU3 had the random coring-over-time which felt bad, you spent half the game spamming merchants, and waiting for things like magistrates to refresh just to do things was terrible. Dealing with pirates and microing ships to patrol your coasts was extremely annoying. The AI always did unrealistic and gamey shit that killed immersion like seeing Bohemia or fucking Castile snaking across Ukraine every game. IMO, best thing about EU2 was mods like AGCEEP that used heavy railroading by events for guardrails to keep the AI following anything even close to a historical path. It still allowed the player to steer the game in a somewhat sandbox fashion, but the game didn’t immediately divorce from reality within 10 years of the start date. AI has always been the weakest part of Paradox games, and modern nu-Paradox have leaned into boring player blobbing world conquest power fantasies. There’s little left once the verisimilitude and the resemblance of real history is gone.

EU3 is fun because the lack of historical railroading, and none of the shit the AI does in EU3 is anymore gamey than shit like re-rolling for the Burgundian Inheritance every game because of railroading or semi-railroading. It feels a lot more like a simulation akin to Victoria II than the other games in the Europa Universalis series.

You know there is something about budget sliders and the way the economy/research was handled with inflation that makes this game probably my favourite EU.
Monopolizing a rich COT in America and making a trade empire isn't difficult sure but it actually FEELS like its supposed to

Yes. When you were growing up in the 90s, you know how Atari games from the 70s were considered ancient history? It's the same. They still feel fresh to you like Atari games felt fresh to your parents' generation back then.

>When you were growing up in the 90s, you know how Atari games from the 70s were considered ancient history? It's the same.
This is a false equivalence. The nonlinear rate of advancement in vidya has declined greatly over time. Games from the late 70s were crude curiosities by 1990, and the rate of development from 1990 to 2000 was tremendous. By 2000, all the modern genres were established and developed, and the difference in games between 2000 and 2010 was essentially merely better graphics. There’s arguably been no improvement in games in the last 10-20 years, aside from graphics, and some minor interface and QoL features. You could even argue games have regressed rather than improving. Companies have loaded games with microtransactions and “DLC” (unknown terms in 2002) rather than full expansion packs, pack games with gambling mechanics and psychological gamification for the sake of “engagement”, the death of community-ran private servers in favor of matchmaking and DRM and so on.

I always wanted to do a Frankfurt -> Germany campaign in this game while staying as a republican type government, but it would be a hard campaign and I don't have the patience for it.
It requires taking advantage of the "claims on our neighbors" event you get from having a ruler with a high diplo skill (easy as a republic) to expand early game and re-rolling missions to get the ones that give you cores through diplo-annexing. Eventually after expanding that way, the country will be strong enough to dismantle the HRE and use the republican dictatorship imperialism CB or revolution and counter-revolution CB the eat the rest of Germany. Dealing with cascading alliances in the early game seems like AIDS though.

The mission system in EU3 is a lot more dynamic which can keep things interesting but it can also mean you keep getting shafted with shit missions and you have to take the prestige hit to re-roll them.

this is probably my biggest problem personally, especially with no "take control of the seige" button so you have a one province minor taking over the capital of your enemy because they got there first.

All you had to do was station light ships every few coastal provinces and that would get rid of pirates completely.

You could just make a small stack and set them to patrol. Pirates are basically non-existent in EU4.

I don't remember how many provinces you need but if you want to stay as a republic you could probably just vassalize the owners if your target provinces then when you have them all just diploannex them all when you have a high diplo ruler+diplomat and do fuck all for 50 years while you wait for them to core, getting rid of any non-essential provinces so you don't end up with ticking infamy. That, or just leaving the HRE before you do it.
