Thoughts on Spellforce?

Spellforce is great when its the rts

The no build levels kill the pace

The RPG bits are great, but the RTS is awful.

The way you build up your base feels out of place? For a generic "the worlds is doomed you must save it from evil bad guy" story, while I did enjoy the comfiness, I always found the way you essentially do a real time simulacrum of a town being constructed to be odd and always wondered if this was supposed to be some kind of settlement construction game at one point.

The game is very unbalanced. Melee fighters with maxed strength can kill armies in seconds while spellcasters struggle a lot in all those missions without basebuildings.

Spellforce is pretty fun most of the times, loved 1 and 2 and they're definitely worth a buy. 3 is meh imo.

tried to play the first one and it was just too slow, maybe i should try it again because i really liked it. I HATE so much that your bases dissapear when you go back to previous levels

Same thing for 2 but its faster, however i dropped that too once i got into a level where you just control 3 (or 4?) characters and do quests like its open world, i did not play 3 yet

I could only play 1 using cheat engine to make the game run 2 or 3 times faster than normal. I was disappointed by 2 with how bland the character building RPG elements were. Also the pathfinding of units was really weird. Its like everything was a tank that could only move forward. Telling a unit to move to the side might get them stuck on something

I like the idea of it more than the actual games. I know some people love it, but it always felt like less than the sum of its parts to me. Neither the RPG parts nor the RTS parts are particularly good and they don't fit together in a way that elevated the concept either.

i'm playing spellforce 3 and its expansions for now, liked the vibe and the story and the worldbuilding, but it would have been better if it was a proper CRPG

the rts section is just an even more rudimentary age of empires
