Playing this has reminded me that I hate FTL's event system. The outcome are random chance so you have no idea if you picked the right option when you fail. It feels fucking terrible to try and learn it blindly.

When I read that I thought it would be a game inspired by FTL and 40k. Then I checked it on steam and it is a blatant ripoff which copied the artstyle of FTL and outright traced art from 40k.

RNG is only fun through risk management. If you don't know what you're risking then you're just blindly picking things.

>>2058354
I'm not saying it's bullshit unfair or anything, I'm just annoyed because half the appeal of roguelikes is learning/optimization and having to repeatedly pick the same choices over and over to try and confirm what they do it sucks.

There are two types of RNG: input RNG and output RNG. Input RNG generates a situation for you to solve, output RNG randomly decides about the outcome of your action. The latter is less liked by players, because it robs you of your agency, and even considered bad game design.

I completed one run of Void War so far and although it's a shameless 1:1 FTL ripoff (just not!40k)...it's good? The biggest downside of the game is that it seems to be running with the FTL basic framework, not with the advanced edition stuff. And even though it's atmospheric, I can't shake the feeling that artwork/portraits, dialogues, microlore dumps and even music, are all AI generated. It basically feels like an AI demake of FTL. With all that said, it's fun to play because the original formula is still addictive enough. Take from that what you will.

It's more than that. It's WH40k but what if Emps died and Imperials devolved into factionalism and banditry, a million different renegade cults looking to rip each other off just to survive, while chaos, mutants, demons and aliens run amok across the corpse of the Empire. The lore backdrop is pretty good ngl.

Ion weapons are still unmitigated bullshit I see. Also, either the AI "cheats" or various opponents have access to utterly broken abilities that allow them to either ignore systems being knocked out by your ion weapons, or just recover/repair them significantly faster. Medbay also got a serious nerf, or is just weaker than I remember/needs more upgrades to actually do what it's supposed to.

Complain all you like, but that's exactly the beauty of WH40k and one of it's greatest strengths - the setting is so vast, so all-encompassing and generic enough, that it can adopt any trope, theme or story, and make it work with a little makeup. Want Mechwarrior in WH40k? Imperial Knights. Want Predator (1987) in WH40k? Catachan/Death Worlds. Want Judge Dredd in WH40k? Adeptus Arbites etc. So for all intents and purposes, the Hell dimension in the Event Horizon might as well been the Warp/Immaterium. It's almost memetic.

I think it's just meant to be Horus Heresy, sort of Flight of the Eisenstein: The Game. I think it even suggests that God-King died but he's now within whatever their name for Astronomican was.

My few, quick takes so far
>Art looks like touched up AIslop, but it does it's job at creating edgy atmosphere
>Music is utterly forgettable and boring
>There are a lot of cool QOLs like recalling all your crew from enemy ship, being able to see enemy weapons, being able to select a room where to install a system and other stuff like this. It feels like FTL with fixed random things that annoyed devs of this game while playing FTL
>Crew no longer levels up, is cheaper and more replaceable
>There are shitton of summons too
>There are tons of unit types within few factions as opposed to FTL where you just had a handful of species
>You can control a lot more units in general than in FTL where you only had 8
>All of this means that you are encouraged to send people/creatures to enemy ship and often fight to death, fittingly for a grimdark atmosphere
>But there is actually a ship Captain, he is your main character and if he dies you lose the game. There are few classes and you select them separately from ship
>Healing is harder than FTL, since medbay and various powers or tools like medpacks have charges you have to spend during particular fight and they won't recover within this fight. I really like this
>Boarding is different from teleporting in FTL since you can only send your pod to the sides of an enemy ship and have to fight your way through. Imo it's better like this too
>Missiles have a separate slot from ship weapons and work different with you loading a template
>Units have equipment now like armor, weapons and tools
>There are psionic powers too
>I don't like how there is no fuel, and how traveling within the region is just moving forward, but at least you aren't chased anymore
>I have not found any Xenos yet, it's only various Imperial and Chaos factions
>Events are boring and too simplistic I think
>On other hand writing is properly edgy and I like descriptions of various units, but story somehow is worse than in FTL and your goal feels random.

It simply cannot compete with FTL and all those mods it has by now. Game is also more expensive than FTL. Balance and few mechanics are simply different, but hardly better or worse for most part. Just different. I guess if you really want more FTL it's ok. But it's really better off to wait for a sale, game is overpriced for what it offers. Maybe by then it will get more unique features like those Dungeons or Planetary Assaults to set it aparat more from FTL and maybe mods too. I think it would work better if it wasn't designed around going towards this big epic fight at the end to finish the game and simply let you fly around the galaxy adventuring. Then again I wanted this from FTL too.

No idea what they actually mean by "Dungeons", but if they integrated some sort of a Space Hulk thing into this game it would be great. Let me send my Crew to some big enemy space station or onto planets and then explore it that way without Space Battles. Now that would be actually a unique feature making game feel different enough from FTL to not be such a literal copy

I mean, FTL has what? A twelve year start advantage over VW? It'll take a bit for the game to really shape up to the level of FTL Adv. Ed. or Multiverse. The devs said they're aiming for bimonthly bugfixes/content updates which sounds great. Atm it feels as if it just came out of beta, but even with that in mind it plays good. I love it how some ships have chests you can raid with your crew for scrap/equipment and how itemization basically replaced the crappy "leveling" system FTL had. I disagree with the idea that you crew is expendable (apart from husks); there's something really charming about slowly assembling a squad, equipping it, mauling the enemy battle after battle and keeping "your dudes" alive. On another note, the warp jump animation is really cool and I don't see why some people are complaining about the music; it's droning a bit, sure, but perfectly fits the visuals and the ambiance the game is trying to convey. Void War is a rip-off for sure, but in the best possible way.

Finished my first run, first impressions are pretty positive. The "normal" difficulty is much, much easier than FTL, but higher difficulties seem to be the way to progress the game and hopefully offer more of a challenge.
I like that boarding is such an integral part of the game and the crew management is much better than FTL's. If you've played a ton of FTL, it really isn't anything new, but it plays differently enough to be interesting.
Grimdark setting is also properly edgy.

GW is very particular about what can and can't be done with their licence. And I'm not talking about gameplay mechanics, more of a "whatever the plot is, we get to veto" and "you can't do anything that violates canon because people will consider this canon" thing.
It's better to just do your own thing if that's what you want to do. The 40k IP comes with strings attached.

Nah, I think this is looking for a conspiracy where there is none. Owlcat announced that they will make Arbites expansion at release of RT and preceding it was Genestealer and Death Cult expansion. Fartshart decided to make Dredd into a class separately. Arbites models are now older anyway and GW hardly bothers with vidya to this degree to coordinate some crossmarketing. Making low effort Titus mini was the extent of their effort

The crew combinations are really all the fun in this game. Just finished a run where I managed to get together a Chaos and Death Knight and a High Magister to teleport them to instantly btfo a large room of my choice. And for the 2nd stage boss bullshit I also had a blood psyker that can teleport all the freshly spawned thralls back to my ship for easy disposal without ever letting them fix the shields.
Shame my infiltrator with the chaos star and assault armor did not survive, combination of suffocation immunity and increased system damage made him invaluable for wrecking demon ships. It's only fitting that he went down in one as I was a second too late to pull him out.

My last one was pretty haphazard, picking up a hate matrix when I had no psykers pushed me to hit up those shops, which in turn led me to look for more modules and ended up with a god build. Three damage fireballs, TWELVE damage psy spears. Absolutely nutso.

I like it. There seems to be a depth of builds that FTL cannot really replicate. I played multiple games where boarding was my focus and in each I did it completely differently.
Also, unlike what people say it's normal and feasible to just ignore boarding. You might lose out on special loot from preserving the loot containers on enemy ships but it's fine for the most part. In fact vast majority of ships has no way to get your crew onto the other ship and buying the boarding pods or teleporting psychic powers/items is not guaranteed.

the psychic powers and items really do open up a lot more options for solving certain problems that would represent a complete impasse in FTL
chancing into a guy with just one good item or one good psychic power can completely change the course of your run

I thought I was going to make it through this assault cruiser b run by just hammering people with soul spears and while it certainly put in work I chanced into a heavy teleporter unit and found a gorgonite early then just threw him at weak early crews or had him jump in to yank a container while the crew was distracted with repairs on the opposite end of the ship
it cascaded into investing heavily into heavy boarders and picking up more supporting powers with mind bolts and some heals to help push fights in my favor, having started with a witch help a lot
after cruising through the early sectors dropping four goons into enemy ships it swung back around to getting a thrall pit and shitting out blood bolts to nuke the boss, I didn't even really end up needing the two storm cannons I managed to pick up along the way
in retrospect maybe I should have tried going for that big optional boss ship

if this was FTL you'd have to gamble on stumbling across someone selling a ship system to be able to try any of this
managing 10 dudes that are cycling in and out of combat and staying on top of a bunch of casters is a bit clunky though

Skills and meh leveling from FTL was (imo smartly) replaced with itemization and item abilities. If you'd want to get the same cooldown discounts as the skills give in FTL, I think it would be better if the bonus was awarded if you have multiple people manning the same room, instead of (re)introducing the skills again. Another way to get more traction from big crews/no crew limit.

if you max out a thrall pit and get just one blood witch to drop an extra thrall when the cooldown is up you can fuel one blood spear caster off cooldown almost infinitely but this is of course much easier with the overseer B that starts with a pit
my win with the A came from building a strong boarding party setup and finding good weapons
its starting weapons are decent enough if you can time the emp to open two layers of shields for the two damage cannon and a hull reaper here or there but out the gate I wouldn't expect to use the spells much besides shitting out thralls to have more bodies for tasks

leaning into blood magic was a lot easier and stronger with the B and the scrap savings from not worrying about buying, upgrading, and powering weapons lets you pump the thrall pit and shields really fast with tons left over for shops
the ability to throw out shield piercing shots that never miss on such a low cooldown really buck breaks a lot of fights and exclusion zones are much easier when you can reliably mash the daemon heart to stop systems from repairing or daemons spawning

the explorator C looks funny
it starts with an ion tunneler, radium blaster 2, and an energy beam but also starts with carnage optics for 10 crew damage on every hit so the blaster can do 40 crew damage with both of its two shots and the tunneler can contribute with its three shots if shields are down
besides that I wouldn't say any of them look particularly out there but they seem to all start with strong weapon setups, only the interdictor starts with less projectiles than 3 but two retributors and a hellfire missile is more than enough to start with
I would guess that they're designed for the higher torments where early ships get much beefier setups

I get the frustration because I've done it twice myself but nah, it's needleslly handholy when the real solution is not be retarded.

That being said, it's kinda strange that there's no consumable or item that teleports you to an empty room on your own ship when your hit 1 hp

honestly that would be kind of a waste of a utility slot imo, and it wouldn't be really useful unless your entire boarding team had one

It would be super useful in the extremely specific circumstance of having one of the crew production modules and a psyker with the group teleport ability (so he can leave the enemy ship and the expendable thralls/husks keep fighting), along with a way to heal him afterward

Personally I think it'd be a very useful module, maybe not one I'd intentionally seek out, but I'd certainly be happy to have it. I haven't run into any scenario yet where I'm unsure when an enemy ship is going to explode, but I run into plenty where the ship is mostly on fire with 3-5 HP left or has such little HP that breaking its systems would destroy it and is still firing its weapons, missiles, or some other harmful effect that I can only stop by sending in boarding crew. In these situations I won't send in my crew and will have to risk a missile shot or something to play it safe.

You could limit it by putting it on a cooldown. It'd feel pretty bad when you miss it by a second or two and lose crew like that though, so maybe it should start charging for a revival whenever your guy would die instead.

Devs need to eat

This is gonna get in trouble. I had seen it on the store page awhile back and thought "Wow they ripped off FTL too GW will give the rights to anyone for anything". Nah this has too much together with 40k. It has the clear Adeptus Astartes look on some characters, The same ships as Battle Fleet Gothic, I could make a list and GW probably will as they uck.

The thing is though the game itself and the gameplay looks fine. It's the art being way too similar. the fact people will look at it and assume it's a GW licensed product is what will fuck this over. Not cheering on GW but there is no fucking way you could get a jury of people with no experience in 40K to not think Space marine with burning sword is not equal to Adeptus Astrates with flaming daemonsword are the same. Battlefleet Gothic ship in fleet and Gothic Space Ship aren't the same either. Having GM'ed Rouge Trader and played Battlefleet Gothic some of the ship parts ARE the same.

The gameplay is FTL no way you're gonna convice someone that a bunch of Boxes are the same as a pewter model. Little sprites aren't distinguished enough to go Those 32 pixels are a Primaris Psyker! The images being straight outta the Dark Heresy book but a little different are a problem.

Hopefully when GW goes after it we can still play it on Steam and it won't get locked and broke like some illegal games. If I were you I'd back up your copies outside of a steam folder. No way GW ain't coming after this when you can put a picture next to another and the common man can easily see it.

That's not really how copyright law works. All of the names are totally copyright neutral and "big guy in power armour" isn't copyright protected, nor is the space gothic art style. GW would need to specifically and narrowly copyright the designs in question.

The beam fires frequently(and last long enough that you can just tap the shields and get some damage through). Like the other anon said, it's way too expensive to use normally but it's basically a fifth weapon slot for the final boss and that's super helpful.

It's quite possible that increasing torment levels 'upgrades' systems of enemies which makes them more durable and gives them more evasion/autopilot/etc although it'd be strange that they wouldn't list that while being happy to list everything else in the torment tooltip

Last boss on Torment 5 is fucking my shit up. The run goes more or less swimmingly until the boss, I hit the first phase change, and then it all goes to hell. Shields and weapons get damaged and I can't repair them until I deal with the invaders. Meanwhile I get bombarded by the boss weapons. If I do manage to stabilize, I hit the 2nd phase change and that kills me.

It feels like I really need a boarding strategy that is able to wipe out all but 1 of the enemy crew. That way I can hit their systems and it wont be repaired for a while, and don't have to struggle against 40% evasion because no pilot.

With all the different commanders, they have a good opportunity to have a lot of small personal stories. Depends on the hull. Heavy A is a bit schizophrenic with Volt Knives but no way to board, but Heavy B takes away your shield and doesn't really give you anything in return. Oblivion A is better than B because of demon spam, while Relic B is better than A also because of demon spam.

This is by far my favorite ship and commander. I think it's because it's "almost there" on everything. Pretty good boarding, but will need a few casts because obscene organ is so good. Decent enough weapons for a long time. The downside is no fucking scanner. Which results in patrolling your ship sometimes after fire or demonbreach fights. But it's ok because if you get demonsummoners you're a 10/10 boarder. If you get another 2 damage weapon you're theoretically done weapon-ing up. If you get another demon module, or rng blessed your miniboss fight with another organ, just your 3 rotspawn can wreck ships. A variety of paths and solid weapons.

Once I got some esoteric schizo oricle ship that I had no idea what it was for and other time I got raped by a horseshoe ship. >start with the only option, the imperial ship with boarding pods and 2 clear boarders
>by end of 2nd sector end up with 2 imperial sidearm modules (+2 dps for each module to the enforcers) and +10hp for imperials module
>also find two +10hp armors and some polearms that give bonus dps in medium rooms
>the two guys are basically terminators now, send them into 2-square rooms and they just melt anyone that comes to fight them
>get a medbay so they're always top shape
>also find a psyker with enemy crew stunning spell just in case they actually had any troubles fighting someone (like the death knights)
>somehow never found more imperial enforcers, just built some husks in the free starports to operate stations
>end up just boarding everyone to death with the two chad fuckers, including possessed ships, finding pressure suits helped
>all my scrap spent on just upgrading shields and engines, who needs ship weapons anyway
was fun but honestly too easy desu

The default difficulty is basically easy mode, game doesn't start getting tricky until you've hit a high torment level unless you use a weak ship or commander. I've only played through Torment 11, 12 is apparently the max, but the game hasn't hit the same difficulty of FTL for a couple reasons:
>Boarding has no RNG whatsoever with the exception of where sleds can land, so if focused on you can wind up with a build that subdues an enemy ship 100% of the time easier than in FTL.
>Pool of random events places much much fewer empty spots on the map and the sectors are longer, so you won't waddle through a sector getting nearly nothing.
>Certain combinations of equipment, spells, modules, etc are extremely strong. Shrines make it easier to get a good combo, but even without them the odds of finding something quite good are high.

He's immensely RNG dependent. If you find good weapons (kills stun enemies, kills restore 10 hp, kills deal 10 damage to all enemies), and you pair him with another trooper to take the heat off, he can perform well. If don't find enough good weaponry, you'll likely lose the round, because he'll die at some point due to his flaw.

I feel like the two free psy slots make him worth it, especially given how much of a good combatant he is with the massive health pool. I've never had an issue finding good enough spells to justify his inclusion. For instance, getting him the room teleport psychic ability just makes him a functionally superior version of the Exile.

Playing the higher torments made me value the Cybernetic a lot more. I would switch him with the Archmage. It's rare that I get a good spell and don't have an available pyschic slot. But I can never have enough slots for consumables (I've also come to appreciate the Infiltrator a lot more). The bonus repair speed is also useful, since you'll be taking a lot more system damage from all the extra enemy firepower and don't want the situation to snowball away from you.

You will find walls at 6 (reduced scrap, larger enemy crew) and 10 (even more reduced scrap). The regular encounters are manageable, though you will take more damage and have to repair more often, and sometimes it's better to run because your ship doesn't match well against an enemy's combination of weapons/systems. The bosses remain right bastards and will become significant challenges. I'm currently banging my head against torment 11 as most runs I make it to the boss doing fairly well, get to phase 2, and then all hell breaks loose and the situation snowballs away from me.

FTL has built in perfect RNG mitigation though: the blue option. If you pick the blue option, you always succeed (or at minimum avoid losses). The idea is to encourage you to have a diverse set of crew, systems, weapons, and upgrades rather than hyperfocusing on a specific thing. FTL (and every other rogue/lite for that matter) is all about risk mitigation. Getting stuff that gives you lots of blue options (engi crew, hacking, high level engines/sensors, etc) will remove RNG and help you survive and thrive. It's part of getting good at the game. The FTL event system is incredibly smart and one of the main reasons the game is so good.

I'm interested in trying this game out but the graphics and UI look really hideous and illegible. There's so much visual noise and all the colours blend together. I like FTL and think the event system is designed intelligently, but the end result feels like a lot of RNG. In order to have enough scrap to spring for things to get blue options you need to not run into too many empty systems in the first place, something that can happen at any given point of the run. While playing there were a lot of cool little gameplay tricks I learned that made me better at the combat, but because of the event system conjuring an entire sector of nothing so many revelatory moments amounted to nothing because I rolled too low.

Most items in the game require at least one other thing to combo with. All equipment requires a crew member with an open slot, you need a missile bay for missiles, weapons bay for weapons, etc. In this case if you have assault sleds you can use the module for the frequent situation where an enemy ship doesn't have a landing point in their weapons bay or wherever else you want to board. Not great but not totally useless.

its obscene with explode on death module
>oops I've dumped a minimum 2 boarders per caster
>they're interrupting repairs and station manning
>some of them poop out poison too
>they also chunk your crew when you finally get rid of them
>twice if a ghoul respawns as a torso :)
the only sort of counter is the three or four sources of "stack dps for every kill" but not only are those rare among enemy crew it still doesn't stop the constant attrition that will overwhelm them eventually

I had a little play around with assassin. Poison stacks while you fight so once poison matches their current hp, you can just run to another enemy.
I think the idea is to sprint around the enemy ship, stacking poison on everyone and then recalling and leaving them to die.
So, minimum essential gear to make her work:
>transportation (pod or teleporter)
>"Sigil of Rot" module (double poison rate)
>area damage weapon
>enemy DPS reducer
Then just cross your fingers and pray you don't run into death cult, machine cult and demon ships.

If you get all that, she's solid C-tier.

retributors have comparable shot/power ratios to storm cannons and are never a bad choice
their bursts are also much faster so you have less risk of a shield layer regenerating before all shots land
putrefactor IIs are 1 power for two shots which is good even if you don't care about the poison which is a nice cherry on top
hull rippers also have two shots for one power and 2 damage per shot on empty rooms which can help get rid of some troublesome ships
you're probably starting to notice a running theme

ion weapons feel a lot more useful in this game than FTL but I couldn't tell you why
the one that takes like 4 power but can fire every couple seconds can get kind of fucked up if you can afford it but I'm not sure its really worth it

Problem with them they're almost never worth the power. I mean why would I use 6 power to use two auto ions, if I even got them, and you're not going to suppress a 4 shield without two, when I can accomplish the same with an ion lance or most missiles + regular weapons. Or boarding. Or teleporting in. Or psionics.
Save that power for your reapers, your bombars or your sex pits.

well the FTL trick is to put higher power weapons that you rely on in the leftmost slots because those go down last when weapons systems take damage and it still works here
the main problem I find with most high power weapons is that they tend to be dubiously worth their investment cost
six shots from a storm III sounds great but because of the delay between shots you have to have something else timed with it or else it will barely penetrate shields
I'd prioritize flechette weapons or the inferno fougasse in a shop because they're less unwieldy but they feel pretty rare

Wight: -10 HP
Priestess: +1 base DPS (4 to 5), Reduces enemy DPS by 1 (against 3 DPS crew she has effectively 90 HP)
Assassin: +1 base DPS (4 to 5)
Cannibal: Gain 15 life on kill, Kills grant +1 DPS for encounter
Cyberfused: -30 HP (140 to 110), ouch

Interdictor C: Retributor I and Retrib II, instead of 2xRetrib I.
Relic B: gained a missile bay and Gladius missile
Oblivion A: +1 ghoul magus with Aetheric Gate. Bolt Cannon instead of disruptor. Missile Bay with Blight Bomb. Seems like it really wants you to lean into boarding with poison boosted zombies. Also comes with 4 Antidotes
Blight Bomb now deals 1 hull damage instead of none.

Overseer C with Wight is hilarious. On Torment V, enemy crew in the first few sectors are often dead before the Devastator Beam finishes charging.
Fiend is controllable, but can't man or repair, and has no gear slots.
Seduced Mystic has Summon Thrall spell and Chaos Engine tool. Tool instead of chaos warp spell is a bit awkward. It wants you to use to teleport the thrall pit thralls to suicide bomb the enemy, but the Mystic has to go with them and is fragile at 20 hp. You can't immediately recall just the Mystic, as it recalls everyone.
No sensors, and the ship is a pain the vent, so be diligent with patrolling for fires.

Haven't taken it for a spin, but not quite sure what to make of the new ship. It has a mish mash of weapons: Graviton Cannon, Heavy Energy Lance, Siege Missile, Displacement Bomb.
Heavy Energy is a weaker Macro Lance (2 power, 2 charges, 2 damage).

Cannibal got a huge buff (super thirsting glaive plus mini soul thresher abilities), but he's one of the "new" commanders (added very late in pre-Steam development).
Witch is great. I'm unlocking ships, so I put her in the raider light frigate A. Between her Death Bolt, the boosted sub-husks (found a second Hardened Casing, btw), and two nekromans I've picked up along the way, not a lot of crew was left on the ships I fought in the first two sectors.

It's 25 to crew after the v1.0.1c buff. Meaning all those imperial recruits are deleted in one go.

I thought the witch is female, like priestess and assassin.

Funnily enough, all the character descriptions are written to avoid saying so. Except for assassin, but you can assume that's referring to the whole order.

Well, "witch" isn't necessarily female and I'd put money towards related, a non sanctioned imperial psyker in general or Zargothrax or whatever being what they're going with that commander. and when the fuck are we getting the xeno in the xeno heretic and traitor

>imperial recruits are deleted in one go
Those don't really show up after jump 3 sector 1 past torment 5-6. It's great for crowd control on your own ship if a lesser daemon slipped thru and for countering some of those nastier psycasts that have a long channel but let's be real. It's straight up worse than a whole lot of other abilities if not all of them once you get options unlocked and synergies available and even 25 is still meh compared to some of the other stuff out there. And it being locked and unable to be switched out is the main downside of witch imho. Yes I can see the value of picking off crew and getting that sweet scrap bonus without boarding but even if you rolled that does damage to hull system you're absolutely better off with blood spear.

Matter of looking at things then. Wraith and rotspawn spawn being the same deal in my view but universally much more useful. And if archnegromancer had an armor or at least a tool slot I wouldn't spare half a second looking at witch over those two.

Just finished a T5 run with the new Priestess and Assault A. Being able to run a shield with the damage reduction makes her ridiculously tanky. I just realized that none of the main war cult combat units have a tool slot probably for this reason.
Shipwide starscream is really good at messing up enemy casters when boarding or giving you enough time to punch down the weapon systems. It's also useful defensively when you get hit the boarding waves on the boss and need to reposition your casters and husks while slowed down by an enemy graviton.

It's something in the water for the FTL fanbase specifically. Usually fans of long-neglected series or concepts are thrilled to see more of the same, like War for the Overworld, Tempest Rising, Project Wingman or Daemon x Machina. For some reason FTL has to be this sacred cow of "original content do not steal".

I'm a fan of the imperials personally. Nigh immunity to fire on most of their units is great defensively and setting the enemy ship on fire is good for killing bosses. They're not as strong as a fully operational thrall pit + blood sorcerer setup sure, but they're very adaptable. As the other anon said the outlaws definitely need some milk.

Having just lost a run on FTL 5 minutes after start because I missed my heavy ion 5 times in a row, I think RNG simply the nature of the game. It's fairly well balanced in the macro sense, but sometimes you can just lose through no fault of your own, just the dice came up wrong too many times.

Events are overall pretty good I'd say though, you usually have an option between "Do partially risky thing, change to be rewarded or punished," "ignore event," or "blue option: always succeed." The only downside of the event system is it's reliant on knowing a lot of event outcomes and the chances to get them from either playing a lot or looking them up, it would honestly be better if event choices were spelled out for you within reason on what they'd do (Chance to lose a crewman, chance to take hull damage, potential engagement, etc). It might seem kind of cheesy, but any FTL veteran usually has almost every event memorized anyway and knows exactly what to pick to have the best chance of a good outcome. There's no reason to obfuscate it after a certain point.

I'd say draining enemy oxygen is still one of the more difficult methods to win, but it's easier to accomplish than in FTL because there are more options for getting it done such as having a boarding crew that's immune to suffocation to keep the enemy down. Fire is somewhat easier to accomplish, because it can get out of control quick if the enemy crew can't snuff it out. Haven't tried using the radium blasters to kill crew yet but let me tell you it sure hurts when the AI does it to me.

You can also just toss a summon to pick up the vault. If you don't think it can break it open before it dies, you can shoot the vault to crack it. The displacement weapon/bombs on the few ships that start with one can also just yoink the vault.
