Completely fictionalized portrayal of actual war situations that then sells itself on being faithful? Yeah that'll do it. Lots of the shit in that campaign was just goofy. I still really like the game myself and didn't let the campaign bother me, but I can see it rubbing people the wrong way especially if they were affected by the war somehow. It's like they thought "Enemy at the Gates" was a documentary, basically.

It was about as fictionalized as the first CoH, Russians are just an anal people, they were mad they didn't get the hero treatment for allying with Nazis and then sending 26 million conscripts to their deaths

Judging by the Russians real world behavior in current war I'd be so bold as to say that they probably weren't much better in the 1940's when things were even more primitive and people were even more brutal.

I remember the pro-russia shills claiming that glorious motherland would never shoot retreating soldiers. But then in current war I literally watched them smash some dudes head with a sledgehammer for the crime of surrendering. So yeah the believability rating that the soviets were shooting people who retreated is quite high.

I am fairly sure the controversy about the mission where you have to burn the village happened only because russian commie who reviewed the game is a massive skill issue who blocked the path for civilians that were scripted to retreat once the fire started, so they ended up barbecued along with the houses. Otherwise, the game portrays the nkvd as disgusting subhuman negroids they were

I think the only moment in the campaign that felt like unrealistic forced drama was when the commissar shot the soldiers that disobeyed orders to save their commander
overall it was a pretty truthful portrayal of the soviet army, which you'd know from your parents and grandparents if you lived in any of the countries "liberated" by the reds. in any case, if you're not willing to dig too deep into the topic of stalinist USSR, at the very least you can read Solonin.
