Banished kinda sucked though
>features houses, which greedily steal all resources to stockpile them in their house
>except for various types of food, there is very little economical/industrial diversity, so if you want a large town, you will just spam firewood cutters 20 times as your town's industry

I am impressed once a city builder introduces a private economy, so it's not like you are not a command economy. I want my early settlers to discriminate against later immigrants and not let them use the common fields, because technically you can interpret the law that only the original settlers and their heirs have a right to use it, not anyone else who came later. I want my smithy to become rich as fuck compared to everyone else, because I used him for early game trade to get other things for my city. I want the local Lord's son to steal the prettiest girl from her family and bring her to his manor and make her his wife.

>revives
... but it didn't revive anything at all.
It was a thing by itself, and every game that followed was a clone

It didn't revive the genre. It created the Banished clone genre

You and me both. I want a colony builder where I'm just the retarded governor and the colony is probably best off without me interfering at all, but I also have my own objectives and can put my thumb on the scale and watch how things are affected.

Is there an actual good successor ? My favourite thing about banished is how many different resources and manufactured goods it has, especially with mods every other one i've seen dumbs it down too much.

Settlement Survival would be right up your alley, real focus on production chains while maintaining the same feel as Banished. Plus there are actual large projects at endgame to build, and multiple merchant factions that offer unique goods and wonders as you build up reputation with them. I personally get more enjoyment out of Timberborn because the water mechanics and vertical building give it a more unique feel, but it scratches the same resource and town management itch.
