>Load up newest version of 1.13 (still gets updated)
>disable most new stuff I either dont know or like
>keep new interrupt system, suppression mechanics and aiming system
>insane difficulty
>no reinforcements
>allow multiple counter attacks
>enemies drop all
>5 i.m.p.'s (0 money left)
>3 machine gunners, 1 sniper, 1 squad leader + ira
>85 on physical stats on everyone including marksmanship
>dump everything else
>every fight is absolute kino including directly after the helicopter landing immediately getting interrupted by 3 enemies and already half my team injured
>both sides are mag dumping turn in and out and rarely hitting anything
>sniper is basically the only consistent damage dealer, still being able to hit out of range
>squad leader is the only one who has marksmanship 55
>good interrupts though
>give him some shitty russian smg with a big ass magazine
>as soon as he interrupts just goes haywire, forcing the enemy back on the ground
>day 2 and enemy already deploys artillery strikes (wondering if I should disable them as well, for now i can just run away, but that probably wont be the case later)

This is fucking amazing
I played jagged alliance 3 and this feels like night and day, not one fight felt this tense or realistic (I know it is not really realistic, but compared to 3 it doesn't feel as "gamey")

always played with it off - even without it my map always turned to an unmanageable junkyard
also it's more rewarding to loot unconscious enemies (in 1.13 you can steal all their gear if they're knocked out)

I remember showing JA2 to a friend when it released in like '99 or so. Big strategy buff so I figured he'll love it. As soon as he saw me moving mags, weapons and other stuff between mercs he was like "this is some shit inventory management game, I'm not playing it". It's funny because a few months later he picked up Diablo 2 and that was all he played for over a year.
>>2069144
Last time I checked there's new character sprites or whatever so that all the gear is shown on the character, this also applies to portraits and there's also a bunch of AI mods. Personally, I checked out when the new AP system was introduced, I still come back to 1.13 from time to time, but aside from new gear and a few other things, I try to keep it close to vanilla. It's great that people are still introducing new stuff to the game, it just shows how great it is, but 1.13 kinda feels like bloat in recent years. I used to play Straciatella, then it got shitty and recently GOG unfucked their wrapper so you can alt-tab without the game freezing, so I can't find a reason to play 1.13.

>too much of a hassle to get going in the beginning
even on expert I usually pick my starter team to have mercs with the hand-to-hand skill and good agility and even hire them without gear, then just rush or flank some of the beginner enemies, knock them out and steal all their gear

>Im not the biggest fan of night fights but you are kinda forced into them until you get your first rifles
you can always 1-day hire someone with a rifle in their starter gear
not even do the "hire, take gear and fire" practice, just use them and their gear for a day, then transfer the gear to someone else

I actually find myself doing a lot of 1 day hires for specific tasks like healing, training militia or repairing items (also hiring Trevor to combine the x-ray device without breaking it)

Do you guys mostly use 2014 1.13 branch or just download new ones?

I got the new one and thought that aiming was bugged, when I right click to make the circle smaller it only gives me two values (for example 20 or 24ap ones) and the third click just makes a big yellow circle. Perhaps because I used handgun.

just finished a "screw the rebels" run
>killed rebels in their hideout, took their guns
>went directly to San Mona, did quests for money
>took over the NW SAM site to be able to drop in new mercs into the area
>went to Chitzena, mainly to bump up mercs' experience, and to get some funds thanks to the mine
>hired Biff to train militia at the SAM site (surprisingly he survived a counter-attack in auto-resolve with some militia)
>did the tourists quest
>used night to stealth around Drassen without taking over the sectors
>found pilot to return to the west side faster, also jumped a bit closer to Grumm
>took over most of Grumm, found some good hardware
>healed up and fixed up gear (mostly paid the local repairmen to fix it)
>crept through swamps and into Meduna
>took over Meduna SAM site
>entered adjacent sector at the corner only to immediately exit into the hedge maze sector
>entered secret passage, cleared basement, entered palace
>knocked out Deidranna with a MG burst and a few of stun grenades and planted TNT next to her
country liberated in less than 10 days

I always play with new chance to hit but everyone complains that it sucks and you should use the old one. I think it's more fun with the ncth but I always have to save scum some fights because most places are 6 vs 20 and so many bullshit misses and headshots happen that I don't think the new system is balanced for a small guerrilla type of game. I mean I have fun but it probably makes the game much more random and harder.
I'm not completely sure though because I haven't played octh in forever.

it's an option you can change (trigger massive drassen counterattack = true or false in the options). I play with it off but most people turn it on. I think it just gives you too much equipment and experience at the start of the game.

It's not hard to deal with after you know it's coming just by training militia. And you can also hire explosives mercs to make traps (which is cool).

Some people also advise skipping one of the 3 sectors in drassen for a while because the attack only happens after you conquer all 3. But I think it's gamey.

Jesus Christ, the disease system is incessant. Figured I'd try it for once. Seen it for years so it must have a fair bit of work put into it.

Fighting about Drassen, mine got reconquered in the counterattack, but I've made a good bit of money and preparing some militia to defend the city after I retake it. While doing so, my whole squad kept getting infected, everybody had at least two deadly diseases. Typhus, cholera, one even got PTSD and then just started losing health and died.

I cleared the bodies. Sure, I didn't have surgical gloves and face masks yet, but surely they can't be mandatory? Did the disease spread from the mine sector? Obviously I couldn't clean that up after losing it. Jesus Christ. I thought I'd like it for the ability to clear bodies but this is horrid.

Learned how to play 1.13 from a few yt videos
question:
is the movement supposed to be so excruciatingly slow during combat? For example I know about weight, dropping backpack etc but even getting people close enough to swap items takes a ton of turns
another question:
it seems you're basically forced to lie down all the time since you're risking too much otherwise? you only crouch if absolutely necessary?

AP cost for inventory is one of the worse ideas of 1.13, just disable it
another bad idea is AP penalties for basically all armor

standing upright lets you run, which costs a lot less AP than walking or crawling. moving in your turn gives penalties to enemies shooting at you (also moving enemies are more difficult to hit than stationary enemies)
also if you've been spotted by enemies, don't bother sneaking, it only further drains your AP for no benefit

Don't listen to that casual. It's supposed to be a slow game and it tries to simulate a real firefight. It's faster to shoot than to stand up and run or rummage your inventory.
The main 'issue' with the game is that every tile is scaled to be 10 meters long, which is why pistol range is so abysmal and running takes a lot of AP to cover a few spaces. If you want your Merc to be a runner and flanker give him athletics and stealthy and maybe night ops, and avoid running in the middle of shootout. Flanking and trying to be stealthy in daylight is also not great unless you can run from building to building and use throwing knives or other silenced weapens. Also yes, crouching and proning reduces your chances of being hit, but it's better to be behind cover.

straciatella and not 1.13 but I discovered that when doing the ring fights in San Mona, while only one merc can be in the ring and fight, you can use all your other mercs to "talk" at the opponent, which seems to rob him from his APs and accuracy (with 3 mercs talking, the opponents seem to throw usually only one punch, rarely two, and most of them are misses)
makes fights much easier
