It made sense in the Bronze age because they fought brutal depopulating wars over scarce tin and copper deposits. But iron deposits were plentiful, no one fought over iron mines in Europe in the middle ages. The most contested resources were land for fields and grazing, and water for irrigation, navigation access, and trade. At best you'd end up with dead horse shit like food, wood, and gold.
