i think the reason lategame sucks in warband typically is becuase the levelling process for you and companions kind of ends or becomes so marginal it no longer matters

There is literally an optimal strategy on how to build your character
the closest thing to a skinner box is simply the battle/loot/hire cycle
most of what you described are elements typical to most RPGs

me, i have 1200 hours in warband playing as a girl. i like to go around and kill sea raiders and looters with horse archery and find a nice lord to marry

i love warband, but i will not sugarcoat that the late game fucking sucks, even in modules that try to improve it.
battle tactics just aren't complex enough in warband that fighting an endless series of battles is fun.
