Would you replay older titles before getting to the current one, or skip straight to the one you enjoy the most out of a RTS/Turn Based game?

For example I wanna play XCOM 2, but I also feel like I have to play XCOM EU/EW first. It's autism.

What are your thoughts?

I do but if I am getting filtered I won't hesitate to skip it.
Shadow of the horned rat, anno (not playing 2d ones), civ 1 and 3, caesar 2 and 1, total warhammer 2 (no humans as base race so not interested)

Oh and original mount & blade. the fact that mouse stutters and stops slightly just ruins it despite the original having superior mods (Gangs of glasgow)

it was better when autists kept their inane hangups to themselves

You should play the real Xcom and skip both of those garbage games.

Try the actual first games like UFO Defense.
After that, you can play XCOM EU/EW and be ready for the "Long War" mod.
Then XCOM 2, but I'd say I didnt played it too much. Spend more time on Xenonauts, havent done the 2nd game yet.

I tend to play through series in release order to see how the formula evolved over time and how they influenced the games around the same time period, both as a bit of an academic interest and not to get disappointed going back to the older entries after falling in love with a more recent one.
Re. XCOM specifically I honestly think Enemy Within was the peak of the reboot games and interchangeable with the base game, just try not to cheese too hard

Lol. The first one is better. UFO Defense. I think Firaxis xcom is only good with long war.

Other games aside, are you new to XCOM? 'Cuz EU/EW is a really nice entry point to the franchise. Most choices are streamlined to 2 options, but the options are still impactful enough that a series of bad choices will end your run.

XCOM EW is legitimately a better game in a way that you can't understand until you've played both. There's a reason that XCOM 3 is soft canceled and the series will only continue with a reboot, and it's that XCOM 2 discarded the story and atmosphere we loved and went off in the wrong direction.

I totally understand that kind of autism and usually I make myself play through the whole series. However XCOM 2 is based on the assumption that you lost EU/EW after the first few months. If you want the real experience play through a game of EW until you lose then start 2

XCOM EW is arguably better than XCOM 2 anyway, so you should play it anyway. Avoid the Long War mod like the plague. All it does is add tedium. The guys who made that went on to make Terra Invicta, and their design policies became very clear. They just love long boring slogs.

No, no let's be fair. LW2 isn't compatible with the expansion for nuCom2. And the expansion is pretty alright.

I hadn't read this far down. I was writing my post while reading the thread and added the LW bit when I read this >>2075305

That mod is so ass. Although I think I only played it for the 2nd XCOM. Maybe the first one is better.

It's not that it didn't go in the right direction, it's that it didn't go all the way. X2 didn't know what it wanted to be and the end result was a mediocre game with many undercooked mechanics, probably the best example of which is stealth.

I specifically wrote Long War for the first game, its not really tedium but simply imo a better XCOM EW and feels like an actual war with bigger stakes and battles. With up to 6 or 12 dudes by your side on the map, advancing methodically and planning advances.
The fact that there is a lot of dudes makes the game a lot less tedium actually, you are allowed for more error and if too many people die, it is your fault.
Havent played Long War 2 or much of XCOM 2 as a matter of fact, I really didnt liked the game compared to EU/EW.
Its not for everyone, but it scratch a nice itch with nuXCOM gameplay.
Also, the Alien threat is greater and you really are the underdogs here, any sacrifice and tactics count. I love choices and consequences in video game and Long War 1 beautifully does it.

I like Long War because the aliens actually have resources you can disrupt. If you kill enough UFOs, it impacts their ability to do more missions.

Sometimes, Aliens even bait you into blowing up their ships so they can ambush you.

First Long War is very good. My only criticisms are that it is too, well, long (to the point of tedium), and that some late game pod leaders are way too tanky. But other than that, it exceeds the base game in every respect. It's tougher, there's way more strategic possibilities at the tactical and campaign layer, it feels like an actual war where there's a back and forth and you're actually putting a dent in the enemy war effort or falling behind instead of the whole thing being choreographed with gradually rising stakes. If you've beaten Enemy Unknown vanilla at least once then you should play Long War immediately.

I know it kind of breaks the early balance but I'm addicted to doing those month 2 landed large ufos (usually abductors I think). They're hard as nails because you don't have any upgrades at all and you're up against 2 dozen xenos including chryssalids, but making careful use of grenades, methodical movement, overwatch, basically every tool at your disposal lets you pull through. And you feel like a god when you pull it off. You get a big pile of loot and it costs the aliens so many resources that they struggle to do anything serious for the next 2 months.
