So I tried my first space 4x with Galactic Civilizations 3. But I couldn't get into it, even though I love Civ games. I think it's the freedom of movement in space that just makes it less fun. There aren't really any chokepoints or terrain features to take into account like a terrestrial game has. The only game to solve that was Sins of a Solar Empire with its limited hyperspace links between star systems, but it was more RTS than a true 4X. Is there any turn based space 4X that has similar movement to Sins? Or should I just go back to land based games?

Try Distant Worlds or its sequel. And if pic rel is legible to you try Aurora 4x.

Mistake. Bad game. Play 2.

Endless Space 2
>But I couldn't get into it, even though I love Civ games.
I'm the opposite, I love space 4x but I can't get into ground based ones.

Seconding Endless Space 2. Hyperlane routing with hard 4x and a lot of variety based on which faction you pick.

Oh I might check that out, how's the combat? I loved Endless Legend but the battles were the least fun part of it.

I like it, but you just set up the fleet and let them auto fight. It has more strategy than galciv but there's still not as much strategy to it as they'd have hoped.

Right. Basically every expansion is "bad" in a way. They are divisive because firstly, whatever new faction is the one that interacts most with the new mechanic and the other races interact like maybe 1/3rd as much with it.

The Hissho one provides Behemoths, which some argue fuck with the game feeling because of them being able to be upgraded to Obliterators which fire planet destroying missiles. You can use a tech that will let your planet take one more hit to kill(in which case, multiple Oblits will be fired), or make another type of Behemoth called a Citadel to protect your system. So the gameplay becomes about spamming behemoths. On the other hand I like that they let you harvest from systems you don't on, they fill the missing role of space stations, and you can make them into Juggernauts to support your fleet. If you play a bunch of games you might end up turning it off sometimes.

The Vaulters one is IMO the only truly good one, but the Vaulters are kind of OP. Also the theme is being able to negotiate with pirates, which of course they are best at.

The Umbral Choir one adds hacking which only the Umbral Choir really make use of. There's not much other races can do with it. Still, being hacked is a negative but it's just a minor dumb thing to worry about instead of anything fun or cool if you're not Umbral Choir.

The Nakalim one had a lot of bugs and people hated the Academy changes and the Nakalim were kind of shit, but there's been some patches to fix things. I recommend playing once with it off and once with it on to see how the Academy is different and decide what you like.

I think the DLCs are called Supremacy, Vaulters, Penumbra, and Awakening, in that order.

Could anyone please help me find a game? It's been a few days of search and I can't find it. It was similar to Master of Orion 1 but newer, that I played at some point between 2000 and 2002. The one thing I can clearly remember besides the graphics is that one of the materials for building units was Adamantium, like from Wolverine from the X-men.

Any guesses?

Behemoths also suck because they are all the same model for each faction. Lazy French retards didn't respect their own game enough to make 8 to 10 models and keep each factions unique aesthetics. Instead they just made one and stapled it onto each faction. I play with them disabled because when I play Vodyani I want cool VODYANI ships. Not some big gay orange eyesore that doesn't fit my factions style at all.

I found it thanks to another thread. I was mixing up MoO3 having adamantium armor and Space Empires IV (released in 2000), which is what I played.

I think it's a solid 8/10 but it has a lot of unfulfilled potential.
