WotE2 is the newest game and the most wonderfully autistic simulation of the eastern front you can find

WitW is similar and also good if you like the western theatres (italy, france, north africa)

cool. is it as fleshed out if I play the russians instead of the germans? I read in the reviews there's some late game balance issues with them

The Russians are on the offensive for the last half of the war, they have the same amount of detail as the Germans do as far as I can tell

I will always shill for WitP on the grounds of one-day turns, simultaneous turn resolution and the challenges imposed by the novelty of the theater. That said, it is by far the clunkiest of the three to actually play for all those reasons. WitE/W are much more conventional and easy to wrap your head around.

Is there a reason to play WitE2 over the first game? I've seen some people saying it's a downgrade.

As a autistic for the pacific theatre WITPAE is absolutely golden. Only problem is the AI and the godawful UI that was very clearly designed by boomers

There's some giga autistic grognards ive seen on the forums/steam forums/ here once or twice.
They always have this weird line of attack saying
"If you really look into the depth of it, its all fake"
And then never explain what the hell they mean by "fake"
Like it's a fucking video game do you think there's actually people shooting each other in your windows vista 2006 from best buy? Of course its "fake"
Tf2 is "fake"
Vic is "fake"
What video game isn't "fake"?
Fucking grognards lmfao.

I recently picked up War in the Pacific at like a 90% discount and I have to say I'm not into it. The bells and whistles you have to jump through to get the resolution to work is a pain in the ass and even then it's not perfect. The text is too small to read and I can never get the window mode to work right. Also 1 turn days means that you can never get anywhere in the game. Which is unfortunate because it truly seems to be the best "simulation" out there of the pacific. I guess I'll stick with P.T.O. I don't think anyone actually ever finishes a game in war in the pacific. People seem to love War in the East 2 and since it's a more modern game you probably won't have technical issues so I would say go for that.

Also I forgot to mention, one thing that turned me off about the game is the exhaustive preparation people who play the game go through to play. If you go to the matrix forums all fans of the game insist you play by this paint by number spreadsheet that tells you how to set up all your first moves in the game. What the hell is the point of playing the game if you make all these "pro" moves at the start? This is what they recommend to new players. So boring.

Oldfarts want to discover they were actually playing the simulation from Ender's Game.

Check the readme, there are switches you can flip that might help.

It is a long, long fucking game, and you can find plenty of reports of people finishing it. Some people even do it multiplayer, and write a fucking novel about the adventures of one ship while they're at it. But you are generally correct that it is an endurance race that is not for the faint of heart.
>exhaustive preparation people who play the game go through to play
See above, but also turn 1 is massive, because that's your initial setup, the workload drops drastically from there. If you're playing Allies vs AI, you can afford to stretch it out over a few in-game weeks if you burn out and just want to click the damn go button.

Probably my best advice is to play in real time. Next December 7, load it back up and play literally one turn a day. That will help keep the workload manageable, and you get the experience of living the Second World War in a way that no other game can replicate. Be sure to keep a war journal while you're at it, you're going to need it.

Yeah, that's one of the arguments I've seen being brought up but never elaborated on. I'm still playing the first game but I might then eventually get the second one on another sale.

That's the problem. I have to be able to binge my war games because in a week I'll be playing a civil war. I can't focus on a single game for that long. i get bored and have to play a different game and once I've moved onto a different game, I'll never return to the previous campaign because I always start fresh when I return to a game.

Then, yeah, you should probably get a refund. WitP is very much a game that demands your patience and your long-term planning. Probably the reason why so many MP games get recorded is just because it functions as a useful means of taking notes.

I think what that means is that for all the autism going on under the hood for tracking unit ToE and combat resolution, the player doesn't really interact with it. If it used the Panzer General HP, ammo and fuel system, the game wouldn't really play that differently. You'd lose some of the granularity in exactly how strong a unit is, and you'd probably need to add variable max health to accommodate for different ToEs and unit sizes, but because the fundamental core activity is still assessing unit matchups and clicking on the map, it would still work in the basic sense.

To be completely fair it does say in the manual it is very clearly a command-and-control simulation rather than an economic/production simulation. Being able to alter the TOE of a unit would be huge but outside of the game scope. I understand the point though

Economics and production are there but not the focus at all
Its all about logistics and using your forces/terrain properly
If you like operational hexgrid war games there aren't many out there with as much detail

Yeah, I don't mean to say it as a deal-breaker. I just notice it more as the resident WitP main due to it being one of the differences. Because the Pacific is so discontinuous, it requires the player to have more of a hand in making sure that the supplies don't just pile up in LA and never get used. It is still simple, and there is the auto-convoy system, but it does do a lot to drag the player into the logistics network at the price of being one of the bigger components of making WitP such a chore to manage.
