>>2078904Faster healing is extremely underrated. With just a few monks you can sometimes keep a knight eternally alive from castle fire .
>>2079147This is worse than release cumans lmao
for some reason frank and mongol players never reciprocate my GLHFs nor my (usually losing) GGs
To the Cataphract dude, they are so powerful there is an implicit gentleman's agreement to never use them. Or so it seems since I almost never see them.
yes, it's me again. i'm asking again for a buff to my favorite unit, the hand cannoneer.
>>2079186It's easier to just go shitty knights.
Hey guys. Spirit of the Law here. Do not reply to his post or I will personally ask Microsoft to make pastures use 4 vills.
Thanks for reading. I'll see you next time.
>>2079226Do it faggot I want to see a 100% winrate civ for a week.
>>2079145 (OP)Campaign when, also they need to separate them from Tanguts
>>2079190Play Hindustanis and stfu.
>>2079235i dont play nonyuro civs.
>>2079238play italians and stfu
>>2079254Africa starts at the alps
>>2079254takes too long to get handcannoneers, but they are pretty fun.
I guess I am improving a little bit...

>>2079259start in post-imp
>>2079249hindus are indoarians, just look at the ghulams, they are paler than woad raiders
>You don't need AP-ACK!
Look at this nigga going similar on score with his opponent at the start of the timestamp to just surpassing him by 10k in score in the spawn of one minute and a half just by the pure force of gookclicking
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2497384916?t=03h15m38s
nice "strategy" game btw
>>2079323>You don't need AIPAC
>>2079323>current #1 player on the ladderis this special or has everyone in the top10 ever done it at least once?
>>2079323convert to the church of mrslow
>>2079304>ghulamsThe word itself is arabic for boy.
>>2079148Even just regular monks can make a difference if you have a few already from dealing with other knights, recall a game where Viper was dealing with an onslaught of pikes and was still able to brute force with rotating between packs that were being healed on the downtime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbuvvEW-j8w
Same game, different perspectives.
>>2079278You can gold single player campaigns while being a 400 elo shitter so I'm not sure about that.
The new Chinese campaigns are kinda easy
AoE2 multi be like "boy I can't wait to micro against 3 scouts with my villagers"
>>2079464they're bugged to shit, terrible at actually explaining the conflict and quite boring
>>2079468I have only experienced one minor bug in 2 of the 3 campaigns
>>2079469I played one of the campaigns and had a supposedly important character randomly die off-screen, got an achievement for something I didn't do and a "choice" I made was reverted the next mission and a guy I killed magically came back to life
>>2079323You don't need apm is only true below 2k elo
you DO have gold medals on all the campaigns, right?
>>2079169Never say glhf, it's considered toxic. Because the only people who say it are lamers.
>>2079482So just get more apm.
It's like saying "You don't need to aim in CS". Yes you do. If you can't aim (or click fast), stop playing video games.
What's your favourite map? Personally I quite like Crossroads
>>2079492Feels like apm is less important in rts games than having good aim is in shooters. I couldn't get past gold nova in cs because my aim is really bad but I got to like 1500 elo with 20-30apm and I have a lot less hours in aoe2 compared to cs.
>>2079541I've always been a Baltic gentleman.
>>2079541Megarandom and nomad both good.
>>2079541Nomad is the only map I need
>>2079541Been playing mostly on Highland since 1999.
The hun's castle looking like detinets should be a hun tech instead of a slav tech.
>>2079541Coastal Forest 4v4
>>2080023Huns should get this tech instead of atheism, pastures AND ox carts but NO echo techs whatsoever outside of TC.
>>20800610 lumber techs would be absolutely crippling for any civ thoughever.
>>2079464Three Kingdoms is pretty overdone. We need some Song Dynasty campaigns since Yue Fei is quite famous, and second only to Guan Yu in terms of renown.
Got fired from microshaft, so here's the next dumb shit DLC:
>low effort jap rework
>ainu
>ryukyu
Spend the money goyim
>>2079148Except you would have to get pretty close to the castle with your monks and castles have a lot of range. Byzantines barely use knights which gain the most from healing, Survivalist often fully heals his cataphracts in long games
>>2080164>ainuWeren't they literally pointy stick chuckers until the late 1800's?
>>2080170Just like Native Americans and Africans.
>>2079380>Even just regular monks can make a difference if you have a few already from dealing with other knights, recall a game where Viper was dealing with an onslaught of pikes and was still able to brute force with rotating between packs that were being healed on the downtime. You forgot to mention 4 relics lithuanians, I knew before I even looked at the video
>>2080164>no USA fake news
>>2080164How will they split the japanese? Oda, Toyotomi and Tokugawa? Although the latter two worked under Nobunaga at some point.
>>2080193Shimazu/Honganji/Takeda
>>2080193Oda and Toyotomi is the same clan since the latter just inherited them after the former's death.
>>2080193>>2080199Gotta be Oda and Shimazu for sure. The third, assuming we get one could be Hojo, Mori or Tokugawa.
>>2079541hyper random but starting with it already explored
I'm actually not concerned about the upcoming DLC at all!
it'll be amazing, I predict an 85% steam rating at a minimum
because the next DLC will be made by CaptureAge and part of Chronicles, it's the DLC after that I'm actually very concerned about
i just played arena for the first time in months
guess what strategy he used against me? guess what strategy the marvelous, diverse arena had in store for me? hint: it required stone
i may actually prefer water maps at this point

>>2080170>>2080171Is the "spear chucker" thing just cope for the centuries of humiliation Spain suffered until they embraced spear-chucking?
>>2080228least irate balkan.
>>2080261Doesn't sound like a balkanoid at all.
>>2080208It is
>RyukyuInfantry Civ
>AinuNaval Civ
>ShimazuGunpowder Civ
>TakedaCavalry Civ
>forgot the last oneMonk Civ
t. My dad works for Microsoft support, saars.
>>2080266i always thought divium was a muslim invader in the UK (based)
I'm tired of looking at the chinese main menu background. Any way to change that?
>>2080280He is Polish I believe, he escaped becoming a janitor
>>2080270Nah shimazu would be the samurai/infantry civ.
is it me or meso civs kinda suck in TGs?
eagles seem like a 1v1 unit
>>2079541>>2080243maps with limited/fixed woodlines are always shit
>>2079541If i don't get arabia I close the game from the steam library.
>>2080302Depends on the map ig
>>2080261>>2080266He's Spanish, you can tell from the way he tries to pronounce castle.
>>2080286Disable it in mods yeah.
Finished all the campaigns
Might do it all again
*Sip*
>>2080536Should do it to see the new castles.
>>2080536you better have gold on every single one of those
>>2080228I've only ever seen him get angry at this game, why does he even play it
>>2079304Arenโt ghulams turks, like mamluks?
>>2080297Can't really make any use of the myriad of team bonuses benefitting only cavalry units, outside of Genitours. The infantry ones aren't usually as impressive, either.
Just had a Frank player rush me with Cavalry Archers. I don't think they get the cav hp bonus do they? They cleared out all my preemptive pikemen
>>2080718>Mounted units +20% HPDon't see why they wouldn't get it
>>2080675>"In the context of military history, particularly within Islamic empires like the Abbasid, Ottoman, and Safavid, "ghulam" (or its plural form, "ghilman") refers to slave soldiers or mercenaries. The term generally signifies a young, male servant, but in this specific context, it denotes individuals who were often acquired as slaves and trained for military service"
>>2080718>Frank CAThey'll get the hp bonus, but they don't get Thumb Ring so literally just fucking stand there and they miss half their shots. I guess it's effective initially but assuming you had a stable feudal age you should be able to swap skirms and kill them with relative ease.
>>2080718>preemptively making units without proper scoutingi shiggy diggy
what are our thoughts on shrivamsha riders?
>>2080925theyre ok i guess
>>2080925still don't understand why they didn't just give it a ton of pierce armor instead of making that brand new retarded energy shield mechanic
"Your life ends in exacly 3 minutes"
Then he proceed to panic tower all my barracks when he saw them getting flagged
Was pretty funny, love putting the fear of God to cavalryfags in this game
>>2080990speaking of towers, i just came across the realisation that I have never upgraded one
it's fucking surreal to me that you faggots complain about "gookclicking" in aoe2 when Hera has like a 130apm while most other RTS demand a minimum of 200 to be competitive
>>2081155>complaining about people being retards and/or baitingthats what they want you to do.
>>2080925they aren't real.
>>2081154Because they got nerfed to shit. Bring back good towers!
>>2081155oh you figured out it's a meme/low quality troll material have you?
>It took so long for gunpowder weapons to be added to the chinese when they're the ones who first discovered it
>>2081184Try Georgian svan towers, they melt units
>>2081189>invent gunpowder>use it for your aphrodisiacs, immortality pills, and fireworksgreat job, chinks
>>2081196I don't have georgians. waiting for them to get added to base game, I'm not getting jewed again.
>>2081198the chinese invented proto guns tho? proto flamethrowers? and also used it for artillery?
>>2081198Sounds based to me
NO USE IT FOR KILLING, DEATH DEATH DEATH
>>2080925I always thought the Indian Master Chiefs having the shields while simultaneously outspeeding Scout Cavalry was fucking retarded. But now their civ has one of the lowest winrates in the game.
>>2081217its kind of weird that they only added a bunch of dlcs for free but not all of them
i'm not saying to add greece or rome (which includes an entire game) but why not give georgians and armenians?
>>2081233Because caucasus DLC is recent
>>2081154The only time is worth to upgrading towers is that if you are defending a mango push with feudal towers
>>2080925What is it in their hands? I thought it was a mace but it looks like a spatula.
>>2081279knife on a stick
>>2081281We call those "spears"
>>2081290it doesnt look like a spear. it looks like a knife on a stick.
>>2081233>its kind of weird that they only added a bunch of dlcs for free but not all of themWhy is that weird
"Wow they gave me a discount on this product, kind of weird that they didn't just give me the product for free"
>>2081293My brain just tried to make an argument on which civs shouldve been given for free based on pattern recognition regarding the DLCs that were gifted and concluded that The Mountain Royals fit the criteria for a DLC that should be free.
i think it'd be funny if they gave 3 chinkdoms and victors&vanquished out for free lmao
3 kingdoms was "OK"
They experimented a little, even if the end result was mediocre
Better than fucking V&V
>>2081312>Better than fucking V&Vthe bar is on the ground lad
>>2081312>>2081321victors and vanquished was a decent idea on paper. it was just fucked by the sheer laziness of everyone involved.
four kangs is just shit however. I'm sick of gimmick units. I don't want anymore toggleable abilities. I don't want more hero single unit micro shit. we're reaching ridiculous levels of civ bloat. all that garbage is why modern rts sucks. they also had the perfect way to experiment with new gameplay mechanics with the chronicles system and they still fucked it up. fucking retards all of them
i still dont get why they didnt do three kingdoms for the age of mythology dlc and then do a sinosphere dlc with the five civs everybody thought were gonna be in the dlc (khitans, tanguts, jurchens, bali, tibet)
>>2081338>victors and vanquished was a decent idea on paper.a dlc of just campaigns? yeah, sign me up. a dlc that's just a bunch of filthydelphia's scenarios (all available on the workshop btw) for thirteen american funnybux? kill yourself. the allegedly campaign focused dlc doesn't have a single campaign in it, it's just a bunch of unconnected scenarios? double kill yourself.
>>2081344three kingdoms isn't mythology tho, and they probably worried about tibetan's reception with the ccp (even though the ancient and modern versions have different names in chinese)

>>2081346>Three of the four Viking scenarios are the same fucking thing
>>2081349>three kingdoms isn't mythology thocounterpoint. lu bu fighting minotaurs would be cool.
>>2081344The original plan was very likely
>Sinosphere DLC for AoE II, Khitan/Jurchen/Chinese campaigns>3K DLC for Chronicles, probably a less shitty implementation of what we have nowThere has to be some meddling going on since they cancelled the AoE III DLC. I hope these fuckers don't rob us of another Chronicles DLC worth its salt.
>>2081344asians have literally no understanding or desire to understand anything but romance of the three kingdoms. I don't know why it's like this but that's the reality. if you want them chang bucks you gotta pay the cao cao tax.
>>2081346hence the extreme laziness. including more community map makers, overhauling the maps, new graphical goodies, custom campaign civs, some kind of bridging narrative. a sensible fucking price.
shame we got what we got.
>>2081355>shame we got what we got.and it's probably killed the idea of an actual campaign pack dlc for the suits
Ayo westerners be pronouncing it "cow cow"
Business idea: extend legendary difficulty to all the other campaigns. Even if they fuck up the legendary difficulty, who cares? It's optional. And it spices up the campaigns for Old timers. Gives a nice incentive to go through the whole thing again now to get a diamond medal
>>2081357>cow cow>sow sow>chow chowwhich way, western man
>>2081355>asians have literally no understanding or desire to understand anything but romance of the three kingdomsIf you see the chinese comments they wanted the song dynasty.
After playing the three kingdoms campaign I love chattering random Mandarin to myself in the shower, what a wacky sounding language
greeks from chronicles dlc for ranked when
They will split korea into goguryeo, baekje and silla next
Hmmm...new campaigns...
It's honestly a difficult question because so much has already been covered
Perhaps a return to Spain?
>>2081378regular korea will still be in the game, the three kingdoms (korean) will be separate civs
>>2081391uh, no white civ focus, too many already.
can we please just get a USA civ? 3 chinkdoms got in, so now it's time for the 13 colonies.
>>2081391In no particular order:
>CeltsA lot of people have said that they should get a proper campaign since the Wallace campaign is just the tutorial. Robert the Bruce would be a good choice, or maybe something in Ireland to avoid pigeonholing the civ as the Scotland civ.
>ChineseThey really ought to have a campaign of their own, but Three Kingdoms just happened and took all the good options with it.
>JapaneseWhat the fuck can you do here that isn't just mirror match after mirror match?
>VikingsHarald Hardrada. He was pretty storied, fought in a lot of places. Could have a fun Battle of Falkirk style alt-history final scenario where he wins at Stamford and becomes king of England.
>Jurchens/TangutsThey each need one badly, but I have no familiarity with their histories.
>MagyarsCan it really be anything but Arpad?
>RomansStilicho. Leads into the Alaric campaign. Nice tragic ending.
>TurksMehmed is probably the obvious choice, but he almost seems too obvious.
>SlavsIdk. I already listed the Magyars on here, we already know the Dracula campaign isn't satisfying for Magyar fans/Slav fans/Turk fans. Who's that one prince who was a big deal? That guy, probably.
>MayansI don't fucking know. Are there any good options that wouldn't be better as an AoE3 campaign?
>ByzantinesNo one likes the Bari campaign. Make a Belisarius one. It's so easy.
No no no I'm fucking sick of Vikings content after V&V
I didn't buy V&V. Give me a Vikings campaign.
>>2081371If they're doubling down on the decision to have 3K in ranked, yeah fucking do it. Let's get that Athens 60%+ winrate.
>>2081401I would suggest Majorian for a roman campaign, fits as being the Last of the Romans and such.
>>2081306I would not take 3shitdoms even for free, I don't want my Random civ option polluted by trash
>>2081467thats why itd be funny to give it out for free
No historical research was done for the Tanguts.
>Tanguts Civilisation Concept
Buildings regenerate HP(Non-Fortifications, values TBD)
Pastures replace Farms.
Shepherds and Herders generate +10% additional food
Steppe Lancers and Fire Lancers +1 attack in Castle, +2 in Imperial(+3 total)
Fortifications + 25% hp in Castle, +50% hp in Imperial
>Team Bonus: Reveal the first built enemiesโ castles
>Unique Units and Regionals
Rocket Cart
Fire Lancer
Steppe Lancer
Camel Rider
Pasture
Anti-Infantry Cavalry (0 Pierce armour, Trample bleed damage, any ideas that's not cataphracts?)
Mounted Trebuchet
>Unique Tech
Castle Age Unique Tech - Cavalry Archer gold cost replaced with food cost
Imperial Age Unique Tech - Stable Units + 3 pierce armour
>Missing Techs and Units (If not stated, Tanguts have access to it)
Archery Range: Arbalester, Hand cannoneer
Barracks: Gambesons, Halberdier
Stable: Knight line, Bloodlines
Siege Workshop: Siege ram, Bombard cannons
Docks: Horrific.
Monastery: Fervour, Atonement
Blacksmith: Bodkin arrow
University: Treadmill crane, Stone wall, Stone gate, Bombard cannon, Bombard tower
Eco Techs: Two-man saw, Gold shaft mining
>TLDR: Late game defensive cav civ with Trash cost cav archers, Camel/Lancer huskarl and missing Bodkin arrow upgrade
>>2081404you get a campaign for the Vikings civ
it's based on King Sigurd's Norwegian Crusade(1107-1111), you lead your longboats on a journey across Europe while your Vikings shout "Deus Vult!" and pray to Saint Olaf on the eve of battle
If your civ has more than a single UU, it's a shit civ.
>>2081708Regional units are still kosher, yeah?
>>2081726you can have a single regional unit, sure
are there still anons who actually want a vikings spleet?
I get renaming them to the Norse, that makes much more sense, but how would you make Norwegians, Danes and Swedes play any different?
>>2081404>Viking campaign>Rape and pillage like a afrinogger until the White man colonizes and baptizes youWhat would be the campaign exactly? Vikangs accomplished nothing of note?
>>2081401>Make a Belisarius one. It's so easy. No, you make the Komnenos trio and their restoration of the Empire - Alexios, John (the perfect king) and Manuel.
What would people think of a wonder rework? Right now they feel out of place as the biggest and most detailed unique civ buildings while playing almost no role in the game. They could remain as game-ending buildings, just in the form of a massive unique buff or aura.
We NEED Tibetans
We NEED Alans
We NEED Jews
We NEED Plains injuns
Do NOT cross me.
>>2081708yeah vikings are stupid
>>2081948>TibetansDiet chinks
>AlansDiet huns
>JewsNo civilization/state until 1948.
>Plains injunsMeso civ that doesn't go beyond dark age.
>>2081952OG civs get a pass
>>2081794I think rather than splitting them into Norwegians/Danes/Swedes, it would make more sense to have an Old Norse/Scandinavian split.
>>2081837>What would be the campaign exactly?Rurik, for maximum Russian seething.

who's in the right here?
>>2082018The one with more upboats
did you know the three longest campaigns available in Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition are
>Chronicles: Battle for Greece
21 scenarios
>Ascent of Egypt
12 scenarios
>William Wallace
7 scenarios
well now you know, you're welcome.
>>2082018I don't use r*ddit sum up the arguments for us
>>2082042Two of them are just tutorials so they didn't count
>>2082042incorrect, William Wallace is actually a mission shorter than GoG and VoB
>>2082048without tutorial campaigns, it'd actually be
>Chronicles: Battle for Greece>21 scenarios>Glory of Greece>8 scenarios>Voices of Babylon>8 scenarios2/3 are Greekpilled campaigns
Greek GODS are simply superior, other civilizations just get mogged
>>2081984I don't think there's any need for a spleet, but a west/east split would be better, sticking with the archaic language to differentiate them
Norse (Danes, Norge, etc)
Varangians (Swedes, Geats, etc)
I wonder why Japanese didn't get a campaign in AOE2 when they put a samurai in the coverart while they got one in AOE1 when it's way too early for them to have a civilization around that time.
>>2082060What differences would you propose for Norse/Varangians?

>>2082163as of V&V, Vikings have 6 standalone missions while the Japs only have 4
>>2082116Terracotta is Qin dynasty; that'd be like putting a hoplite up there
Chinese soldiery just doesn't capture the cool factors of the west (or, quite frankly, barely even out of the sinosphere)
>>2082077I said I don't want the spleet and my knowledge of medieval sweden/the early Rus is extremely limited
Norse retain all Viking traits, so it's not actually a spleet
Varangians share longboats and uhh, maybe get wood from fishing because it's an new eco bonus. UU is a war cleric (re-using the Norse Swordsman model) who heals allies around it every time it attacks, as a way of representing both their pagan roots and how their christian priests the fought against the pagans
They'd still be infantry focused, so probably no Arb, but maybe bloodlines. A Unique tech that would improve their infantry (extra armor because of their metalworking?) would similarly apply to their longboats, just like Bogsveigar. Maybe something representing their mercenary service to the Byzantines, or some kind of Kalmar Union discount that all team members (including you) build their next TC for free.
Team bonus increases the market value by distance by 25% to represent the distances in the fur trade/amber road
>>2082215>could have made a Song or Ming/Khitan(Great Liao)/Jurchen(Great Jin)/Tangut(Great Xia) DLC>medievalists and mongolsteppefags would've been happy>no heroes to get the rankedfags riled up>could have made a Chronicles style(could have called it something else not to step on CaptureAge's toes) narrative focused Three Kingdoms DLC that actually explored the different warlords in more depth and gave each more than 5 missions>epic heroes and iconic moments straight from the romance>3K fans would have been all over that shit>instead decide to make an unholy frankenstein of the two>one of the worst rated DLCs in the game's historywhat were they thinking?
>>2082243>what were they thinking$$$$$$$$$$$$
>>2082243honestly, that's all I was expecting from the big announcement about the 5 civs, speculating stuff about An-Shi rebellion or Yue Fei and the Jin-Song wars, only to be crushed by 3 Kingdoms
it's also super weird now because one of the "problems" was that China, Korea, and Japan didn't have campaigns, and now we also have the Khitans and Jurchens without campaigns. There's a clear audience that only plays Age for the scenarios and compstomps, so there's definitely a market for that sort of thing, and I think having a focused Scenario pack (ie, making campaigns for all 5 civs) would be much more appreciated that how V&V was a smattering of individual (mod workshop) scenario,
Still, this is now making an expansion for expansion content, something that's never been done before for the game. There'd probably have to be some kind of benefit, such as unlocking the Khitans and Jurchen for MP, but that now makes it weirdly redundant with Three Kingdoms. Maybe they could add some extra "unlock the Tibetans and Tanguts" onto the side, the same kind of grift as Return of Rome?
Speaking of Return of Rome, they had originally floormapped adding the other Age1 campaigns for free, so those were expected, but nothing was promised for the K&J, so it's up in the air if they'd do anything of the sort
>Note: the Tanguts and Xia in Mongol3 (into China) are STILL Chinese after 3 months
3k is their best selling dlc so we probably getting more chinese stuff. No way they move on after their sales.
>>2082127Dunno, he looks like average Italian.

the three kingdoms campaigns end with the Battle of Red Cliffs that took place during the winter of 208/209AD
the Yamato campaign doesn't have a specific start date, however the Yamato Kingship's start is usually given as 250AD, and the final scenario of the original campaign actually does have a date: 405 AD
this however is wildly incorrect as looking at the map I'm pretty sure it's depicting the Battle of Baekgang or something similar, it was even called 'Tang Invasion' in some patch if the original game, and that battle was in 663
the definitive edition actually completely reworks the final mission to make it more historically accurate, placing it in the year 740, that's 531 years after the totally """""Medieval""""" campaign we got lol

>>2082842They have Halbs with all upgrades and up to Longswords with gambesons so until Imperial age you can use them.
I'd also say that Persian fully upgraded Longswords are still useful vs even Mayan elite eagles in imperial.
>>2082842FU Halberdiers, just stuck with Long Swordsmen otherwise (albeit also having Gambesons) to deal with shock infantry. The former is a bit curious considering Persians have FU Heavy Camels too, albeit nothing special. Lacking a good trash cleaner is one thing, but their main caveat really is the lack of Bracer and some of the worst Monks in the game.
Jurchens have the most flawed Militia line, but have Fire Lancers anyway. Tatars lack two infantry armor upgrades, but they'll probably still bring out the Halbs in trash wars or on a horde of elephants.

As for infantry, condos are a lot of fun and actually beat generic champions head to head, and don't take a million years to upgrade to.
Consider also the Burgundians. They're missing some navy upgrades but do have galleon with Bracer and super good boom eco for you to spam boats with. Also very hard hitting cannon galleons. On land they have fully upgraded halbs and 21-damage hand cannons and a fun cav UU to complement them. Also champs.

You will have to train 1 maybe 2 more villagers before going up to feudal age delaying your timing.
Killing villagers early always has better value than killing villagers later. If you both engage in feudal war and you kill 1 villager and he doesn't kill any that is a big advantage if you can macro properly and click up to castle age at the right time. >>2088084>it's actually doing really well, it just gets mogged by [Previous game]That's called a FLOP
>>2088147Aren't the tang the cannibals?
you guys are retarded. the next DLC will be colonial US broadly made into 3 civs: New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, Southern Colonies. i know this because 3 kingdoms were made of the same kind of chinks and it only lasted 80 years and is similarly far away from the actual aoe2 timeline as the US is.
if you doubt this, you're gay.
>>2088148DE sforza is one of of worst campaigns next to berbera, in first two missions you have to deal with no economy and you have wait patiently for resources tickling, rest of missions is just deathmath. I think on 4th I had to deal with +50 ships on few tiles wide river.

the trick of playing archers is that you have to be patient, because one bad fight and its gg automatically. You really need to mass numbers without losing too much map control.

>>2088148Alaric and Prithviraj are pretty good, but most Forgotten stuff is pretty shit yes. Italians and Inca are pretty bottom tier especially, they're just endless mirror matches.
The composite bowman is one of those units that in theory seem like they're gonna be great but then you actually try them out and they are mid or bad.
>>2088139Khitans have a very strong earlygame when Achaemenids only really open up in Classical, but have a few odd quirks with the TC upgrades that would need some practical exploration (beyond the gathering one for farms). Athenians are certainly busted otherwise, Spartans in a competitive setting I imagine would live or die depending on how good their earlygame is; a Polemarch is an extra guy, but he is also literally their only discernible military bonus.
>>2088324they're beastly against heavy cav
regular arb takes 60 shots to kill a pala
composite bowman takes 23
Elite genoese crossbow for comparison takes 18 and is a hard counter (and has the same lower range as compbows)
>>2088338the problem is that genovese xbow has a lot of HP/armor to compensate the lack of speed/range, but the composite bowman lacks bracer and armor, so its gets fucking destroyed by skirms, even with the ignore armor thing
>>2088340Armenians have bracer and all archer armor upgrades, and genbows only have 5 more hp and 1 more pierce armor than compbows
Elite compbows beat elite skirms cost effectively, not counting the range advantage, but you should have megatank champs in front at all times anyway
Compbows, just like genbows, are countered by good archers who can abuse range, but against all other unit types they're fucking good
>>2088258jeetmaster back to his cultural roots, nice

Can someone explain to me the appeal of DLCs for this game (AOE2 DE)?
They give you campaigns (that are all the same and the bot is too easy) and civs for MP (which are all basically the same).
I love the game but I don't really feel a desire to get these DLC even for free
>>2088481You know what the beautiful part is? You don't need to get them.
>>2087752killing/destroying ANYTHING is worth doing in ANY rts as long your resources spent to do that puts you ahead. but yes, i play as byz and yes its annoying to have your cisterns destroyed. keep in mind thats stone gathered and vils assigned to stone that could have gone to other things. we aren't building them for 'no reason'. but like every decision in rts's, it all comes down to priorities. dont sit under a fucking garrisoned TC with 5 spears to take down one cistern and lose all your units like a fucking tard.
>>2088258>>2086482>>2086470>>2086365wtf are those fractions above the mini map?
Is Return of Rome worth it just for campaigns?
>>2088147The three Dharma Kings did pretty good for themselves, though it lost hard after them
>>2088173The siege of Suiyang was just one part of the An-Shi war, which is still the 8th most deadly war in history, not just due to peasantfood. For perspective, it's almost 900 years earlier than the 30 years war and killed 1.5 to 2 times as many people
>>2088490I liked it
but it depends, do you like AoE gameplay?
if so, then yeah it's pretty good
if you get really mad at academy units raping literally everything, then maybe not
>>2088490Did you like the original AOE? Your answer boils down to that.
>>2088490Also mind you, you're only getting it for the new campaigns, the objective best way to play AOE is the original with UPatch HD.
>>2088489player personal score/team average score
team with a higher average is placed above
players are ordered within their team with the highest score first
>>2088324Compbowmen are a high DPS glass cannon that is highly effective against melee units with high pierce armor, and reallistically, good vs anything that is not siege, so long they are meatshielded, absolutely shreds cavalry and infantry with high PA, like eagles and husks
But I cannot emphasize this enough, do NOT use compbowmen are a crossbowmen replacement, they have shorter range, shoot slower and low damage vs long range and/or low PA units, they strictly good to melt enemy frontline, if you use them to trade with ranged units you will die, you NEED elite skirmishers or Armenian champions
I love compbowmen because they absolutely wreck enemy cavalry in a few seconds, with the meatshield of my pocket cavalry or my own skirmishers. Dies horrribly against siege but you should get redemption block printing monks for that. Or Warrior Priests. Or champions.
So compbowmen ARE good, but if you use them the same way you use archers they will suck.
>>2088490While I wouldn't call them amazing, they're the best official campaigns you'll ever get out of AoE I. A pity that any update support is so limited, Trajan would lend well to a co-op campaign too.
>>2088316They suck. Drav elephant archers are amazing tho.
Honestly Dravidians should get elite battle elephants, the melee armor ignoring gimmick is good but drav battle elephants are so fucking garbage in imperial age is not even worth using, hell even fucking Light Cavalry does a better job at countering tanky melee units.
>>2088455I got enforced random. Again. Not complaining tho.
Funny thing is that we won only because purple opened the gate for me with a converted elephant, and got orange killed for that. Kek.
>>2088638>shoot slowerthey have the exact same fire rate as regular xbows
their initial frame delay is ever so slightly slower, meaning they are worse to micro, but in a sustained fight they're identical to xbows in this regard
hand cannons have 7 range and do 17 damage. they will do 9 damage to a fully upgraded elite skirm and 10 damage to a fully upgraded paladin. a fully upgraded composite bowman has 7 range and does 8 damage that ignores armor.
what does this mean in practice? I don't know but maybe they should buff hand cannons somehow.
playing the single player campaigns for the first time since 1999, very comfy
can't buy any dlc because of geopolitical reasons though, which sucks
anyone up for casual group mp? could do ranked as well, i think i'm not complete garbage hopefully maybe

>>2088778get to castle age quickly (use the market if need be, saracen can use it for cheap) and build castles everywhere for defense, then just use mamelukes as your main army for everything
>>2088807Tried that, but the trouble is, I end up getting spread out with dealing between the other two town centres of my allies being attacked and having to save their asses.
Not to mention, every single faction just ends up ganging up on me if I end up using too many trade units or even if I start building a dock for fishing.
I am trying to rush castle age as fast as possible, but I get rushed far too quickly.
>>2088778Make army and use it, ez game
>>2088828a castle in front of the teal enemy's gate just northeast of your base should shut them down completely until you can get some siege to clean their base up
mamelukes should kill everything the enemy across the sea sends your way, though you can make a stable and camels in castle age before you get the castle up if you're in dire need of army, don't forget armor upgrades
you probably just need to get better at the basics, like getting an eco going quickly, make sure you're producing more villagers absolutely nonstop, so food is your top priority, which on that map means chopping a bunch of wood and farming, once you've clicked up to castle age focus on getting a ton of stone for castles, trade carts aren't worth making early until you've defeated teal and red, keep your army near your base for defense though you might have to run save your allies
>>2088837>a castle in front of the teal enemy's gate just northeast of your base should shut them down completely until you can get some siege to clean their base upYeah my biggest issue is I keep getting my ass rekt before castle age. So while this is definitely useful, my biggest problem is getting there first.
>you probably just need to get better at the basics, like getting an eco going quickly, make sure you're producing more villagers absolutely nonstop, so food is your top priority, which on that map means chopping a bunch of wood and farming, once you've clicked up to castle age focus on getting a ton of stone for castles,I should probably try doing that. What I was doing was starting off concentrating on food and wood for the bulk of my villagers with 3-4 villagers set on gold. But I primarily placed the bulk of my concentration on wood. I wasn't sure if there were any stone queries nearby, so I concentrated on getting gold to buy the stone later (and also for the market, as you said).
>trade carts aren't worth making early until you've defeated teal and red, keep your army near your base for defense though you might have to run save your alliesI see, that might've been my biggest mistake. I put trade carts so I could passively generate gold, same with trade cogs. That was probably a mistake.
Either way, I'll try all this out now, thanks.
They should add Gauls, Germans, Celts, and Huns to Return of Rome.
>>2088638>do NOT use compbowmen are a crossbowmen replacementthis is funny because usually archer UUs are just straight up better than the archer line
i could never understand when you want to make the switch tho, like, when do you decide to stop producing xbows and go for plumes? as soon as you have a castle?
Do AoE3 and 4 have less rigid Age 1 build orders/timings than 2 does? I like 2 but it feels like any little errors I have in Dark Age cost me huge parts of the game
>>2088959the first age in aoe3 is a lot shorter than aoe2. I haven't played in forever but I think you click up in like 2 or 3 minutes.
>>2088857I wanna see Norse and Olmec too. Are there even much other pickings for steppeniggers that could broadly include Huns?
>>2088959Can't speak for AoE III as much, but AoM is roughly similar mechanically and Retold autoqueues villagers on game start. But they are faster games where you have your first combat engagement by the time players hit Feudal in AoE II.
>>2088902Depends on your civ, civ match up, map, and the situation you are in. But yes, for the most part, if you can got a castle you're better off going for archer UUs. Most of times.
Plumes are good vs infantry, other archers and are good for raiding, but their -1 damage compared to regular archers makes them awful at handling cavalry and skirms.
Rattans are always good, always make them if possible.
Genoesse crossbowmen are good vs anything on 4 legs and are okay'ish vs infantry, dies horribly to archers and siege.
Compbowmen are almost always good so long you got a meatshield (like skirmishers) and are not facing siege, otherwise in a 1-on-1 combat, compbowmen will lose against regular archer-line
Longbowmen are always good so long you are a meatshield and you can manage to keep your distance with the enemy, slowly pushing foward inch by inch, but are specially vulnerable to ram pushes
Chu Ko Nus are always good, specially against heavy cav, skirms and rams, and can overwhelm enemy archers if the enemy archers dont exploit the chok's lower range, but choks die horribly to scorps and onagers
The only time I'd actually go out of my way to priorize crossbows over my UUs is when the enemy has CAs or any CA-adjacent UU, the most notorious case being against Spanish castle drop into Conquistadors, you are always better off getting crossbows and rushing Ballistics to counetr the conqs, otherwise he will snowball you due having slow producing units from your castle
>>2088993Scythians might be better for Chronicles
But there are the Sarmartians who later got absorbed into many Germanic/early Slavic tribes are splintering and the Parthians which conquered Persia.
And thatโs before the 3 or 4 proto-Mongol khanates but those have been usurped by 3 Kingdoms. As the cool Xinbe are already used as UU.
>>2088847trade is good but it takes a while to set up and to start paying off, and the resources spent to make the carts are better used to secure your base quickly at that point in the game
>>2088481The Dawn of the Dukes campaigns are great and definitely stand out compared to something like the Forgotten campaigns. Some of the civs are also unique and really fun to play in MP like Gurjaras and Armenians
wait, so pagodas are actually good?
>>2089342I haven't watched the video but he's comparing an elite UU to a basic knight and scout, is that supposed to be impressive?
>>2089369>UUand?
it costs less gold, has higher stats and occasionally ignores melee attacks
yeah, other than needing that castle yeah I'd say it's pretty impressive
>>2089405It also requires Imp and probably 1200 res.
Why is nobody complaining about monaspa anymore? The nerf did fuck all. Once you get like 15 of them they still destroy everything in their path, and they are still cheap and fast producing.
>>2089342Pagodas are slighty better than Knights in melee but require castles, but much better vs range units

I categorize Monaspas, Tarkans, Coustillier, all camels and mamelukes as "medium cavalry", since they are not as powerful, beefy or damage as actual heavy cavalry, like Paladins, Savars or Cataphracts, but still pack a bigger punch than actual light cavalry units, like Hussars

How do I complete this mission? Not even a castle helps, the AI sends so many units the castle is firing 24/7 and eventually gets overwhelmed. And this isn't even hard difficulty.
>>2092642take the orange base with the starting army instead of the Burgundian base, it's easier to defend and has more resources, then come back to wreck the Burgundians. Paladin and cannons are all you need to win the mission, but it's gonna be an annoying grind since the AI loves to micro every individual longbow and kite every second of its life
>>2092472A vague idea of the series getting forward in time does not equate to the devs planning anything.
Age 3 underperforming and not being well received put a stop on that idea ages ago.
>>2092399It's a different joan from arc okay
In AoE III whenever units are hit by a melee attack they are slowed for a few seconds so that if you get cavalry caught you can't just disengage in an instant.
Is that one of those ideas that are good on paper but bad in practice?
Cavalry isn't the king of the battlefield anymore but musketeers being both ranged units and anti cavalry already dealt with that and the side effect is that it's pretty much impossible to not lose your whole army in a melee engagement now and it contributes to games almost always ending after the first big battle.
>>2092666>but it's gonna be an annoying grind since the AI loves to micro every individual longbow and kite every second of its lifeYES fucking exactly. I can't even send paladins against those annoying cannon galleons because they're instantly moved the other way. Same for the longbow shits. Thank you anon.

>>2090115>I thought they were upset over the same reasons. They are which is why there was no counter review bomb except from stupid redditors.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, fucking hates the DLC. Everyone is pissed that China got screwed out of their campaign AGAIN. Everyone hates seeing heroslop chinkdom civs in multiplayer. Everyone hates that this shit ended up the most expensive AoE2 DLC ever.
The fact that they haven't said shit probably means they're still scrambling, even months later, to figure out what the fuck to do because they wasted an entire year on a lemon.
>>2093394it looks almost identical to AoM retold which looks pretty good
>>2093556did they not make a ton of money from the retards who will consume anything especially the chinks who love all things chink? i feel they went radio silent because they made enough money and any talk about anything regarding 3chinkdoms will get hate from all sides.
>>2093568I think right now everybody have it's own theory why they are so slow with balance changes and radio silent, I think xbox layoffs hit aoe team too so we have to wait patiently for restructuration of aoe team and hope that new team won't be greedy and shitty at their job

hey remember that new utterly broken civ with a 60+% winrate? turns out their actual UU also beats EVERY SINGLE UNIT IN THE GAME cost effectively, and everything except elephants pop efficiently too!
devs are very intelligent
>>2093890They are because people have to buy the DLC.
>>2093568NTA but they absolutely went silent when Tale of the Dragon shit the bed a decade ago and bricked AoM EE for years.
>>2093890>Liao counters unit with supposed to counter them like jaguar warrior or cataphract. They don't beta test their own game?
When are the post-nerf winrates going to be posted? I want to see how insignificant the Khitan nerf was.
>>2093890Classic p2w DLC.
>>2093394But the camels look cool, right?
>>2094104no fucking way it dropped that low
>positive winrate at high elo because people know how to exploit its buffs and at low elo because noobs don't know how to counter them

>Bulgs top at <850
That MAA rush is just too strong.
>>2093890khitans need a buff.
>>2093566>>2094043looks jarring, not sure how else to describe it
the combo of villagers glowing gold while everyone is wearing almost entire team colours(bright pink and yellow) makes everything look cartoony
also the scaling is absolutely bizarre. why are the camel archers firing what looks like composite bows that are as tall as a person and fire oversized arrows at villagers standing next to a comically tiny building they couldn't possibly squeeze inside of
yes I'm aware AoE1 and 2 buildings aren't exactly realistically proportioned, but it looks a lot more noteceable in 4
>AoMheroic scaling lends itself better to fantasy games
>>2094139But the camels themselves are cool, right?

>>2094043>>2094145I think those are dromedary akshually
>>2094146dromedaries are a type of camel
>>2094147and squares are rectangles
>>2094150You're the square, nerd! 8^)
I'm sorry I didn't mean that
>>2088649>Honestly Dravidians should get elite battle elephants, the melee armor ignoring gimmick is good but drav battle elephants are so fucking garbage in imperial age is not even worth using, hell even fucking Light Cavalry does a better job at countering tanky melee units.I have feeling the devs don't want to make Dravidians "too strong"
>>2096598Urumi are already melee kings, they don't need more melee options.
