There was potential here but it kinda falls on its face the moment you try to go and do anything. Limiting it to a single city is kind of disappointing.

No, it's pretty bad. It's ugly, poor UI, production chains not even that interesting. There's some world map gimmick, but the city builder part is just not good enough to want to get there. There's plenty of better even indie city/colony builder games.
