I'v been replaying the DS version of Age of Empire recenlty, its great. Its a weird mix of AoE with turn based mechanics looking like Advance Wars and for some reason the game works beautifully.
There are nice campaigns and nice map with special scenarios like Hannibal's crossing or Agincourt battle.
I know there is "Mythologies" but the a-historical setting never appealed to me, it also seems like the Age of Kings has cut factions with all the merc special unit like Danes, Chinese, Celts, and more.
Currently playing the Japanese campaign, its pretty fun desu

Mythology was better and it even had proper online multiplayer with custom lobby list. Shit was fucking crazy. I loved both a ton. Only thing I really hated was AoE had those unlockable units that where way fucking better than the standard ones and the AI never used them so you always had the upper hand.

These made the Richard campaign so much more bareable. Mission 1 and 2 are pretty hard without the Swiss Pikemen and Genoese Crosbowmen.
Most of the game is very well balanced, I can only think of few missions that are very hard like Saladdin's conquest of Jerusalem and Richard's mission I mentionned before.

"Yashima" mission in Minamoto Yoshitsune was way too hard in a campaign deemed as "Easy."
One single mistake on my part and I had to hold two factions with Minamoto aloneon a bridge. Thankfully, as a hero he has a lot of stats boosted, powers and being a pike unit honestly helped to boost his defense but it was way too close. The AI spammed monks and it dragged for way too long.

I remember the "Mongol Invasion" mission was very fun, I play it now.

The only one I played was FF12: Revenant Wings. It was ok I guess.

Agreed, this game had everything that could've gone wrong gone right. Its a real shame that no sequel or game took on a similar formula with the same setting was ever released.

Great game for a DS. Unfortunately suffers from terrible AI and a few bugs.

I've replayed this mission a bunch to figure out why people find it so hard.
>restrictive pop cap early so it's actually optimal to sac your scout (not intuitive)
>somewhat difficult to keep all your initial units alive, balancing the hero and its healing powers (once you get enough stars on them you can easily snowball from that point)
>seemingly random or obtuse triggers for the second AI to start being aggressive (oh, you built a fucking farm on that one patch of wheat?!?!? Okay time to die motherfucker *sends imperial age samurais to fight your feudal age shitters*)
>enemy monks (not necessarily hard but annoying bullshit rng)
>the trigger for spawning Antoku for the last mission star is not well established so sometimes he can just run off early and cause you to restart the mission
The mission isn't actually that difficult if you're aware of all this and have some general strategy experience under your built (eg. chokepoints are good, econ is king, hero units are usually your strongest chess piece so keep them alive and use them effectively etc.)

The hardest mission for me from memory was the Siege of Acre with the enemy's bullshit ability to stack multiple units on one tile and the optional missions to kill Saladin/mamelukes with your army full of templars (jesus christ how horrible)

>The mission isn't actually that difficult
Yeah but I honestly think its really not an "Easy" mission.
As a kid I got filtered here with the Japanese campaign but now even with a single mistake where I misplaced my hero taken from 4th age elite samourais and 3rd age longswords I still managed to finish the mission.
Its just very very long and tedious but once you managed to build a second town center and two castles to spawn pikemen, samurais and horse archers. The rest is history, and only the monks are truly the big problem.

Sure, I was just exploring the reasons why it might be hard for the wrong reasons. Even still, the AI will do everything in its power to lose, like attacking the Hero with light cavalry. With careful positioning you can neuter the Taira with just your starting units even.
I believe it's extremely difficult to outright lose the mission, which is what makes it an 'easy' mission, even if you reckon it's long and tedious (it doesn't have to be though, see pic).

I remember seeing and playing this game when I was younger and yea, I enjoyed the TBS aspect more than the mainline RTS. The little combat animations similar to Advance Wars was great too.

I also wanted to try CivRev for DS since it seemed like Civ 2.5 that I always wanted but not sure why never got into it.
