I played a lot of 2, it's right up there with Master of Orion... 3 was worse but still good, 4 I haven't spent enough time with... First impression wasn't great but I should give it more time to grow on me

Yes, I will shill a little bit.
Game is better than its predecessors. Frustrating elements have been removed without dumbing down the game.
For example, conquering worlds. You no longer need to spam transports since they persist in between invasions. You can also conquer planets without any transports if your fleet is mighty enough.
Getting your worlds going is soooo much nicer in this game because your colony capital building is now free. No more waiting 20 turns for your colony to even begin to roll.
It is implied your ships have engines and life support by default so you don't have to constantly upgrade and switch out engines as you climb the tech tree. Instead engines give additional move speed.
I can play custom civs.

This has always been the case, at least in 2 and 3.
