Take your character's trait, and try to act like he would act while also not forgeting that you are ruler.
You are born in nobility, you have duties to your dinasty and family. You can also have a "Raison d'état" type of reasoning and therefore search the realm's interest first.

Pic related is a dude that kicked Charlemagne's ass so hard that he never was known as "the Great" but as "the Empty pockets". He bankrupted his kingdom to conquer Saxony, failed, got his nose cut by one of my warriors in battles. This ruler is now know as Diederik II "the Wall of Saxony" because he btfo so hard Charlie. Btw, the Karlings are pratically dead, and now Frankish nobles are all fighting eachother.
So far, I have met a Muslim physician but I misclicked and I wanted to convert and go to North Africa to install a Vandal Merchant Republic at Carthage. And switching to Norse or Amazigh to keep on raiding on boats and have a Regency of Algiers/Carthaginian Empire in the med sea harassing europe.

Since CK2 is about dynasties, I suggest getting the mod called Infinity Play Non-Dynastic Heirs and maybe some mods for cadet branches, if there any good ones.
Beyond that just try to stick to the traits of your character.
