Anyone here ever played this?

It's pretty fucking baller, but I'm at my wits' end to how the stat growth works in this fucking game. I've read on ancient forum posts that it's just a matter of using them.

But fucken somehow my Level 15 guys that I've used from the beginning of the campaign have such laughably low skills (around 40s at the highest) while the perma-benched dudes that got auto leveled to Lvl 12 have skills in the 80s, sometimes even breaking into 100s like with the engineers.

Is this a bug or am I expected to grind for hours each soldier on random encounters?

So unless I take my time to grind each fucker they're bound to be outdone by unused dudes?

That's fucking retarded, if so...

No massive grind is necessary. The skills improve by EFFECTIVE skill use capped by some esoteric soft cap that increases with your level and your level increases when your skills do. Translated that means just shooting at air is less beneficial than shooting at live or downed enemies etc. In short don't stress it unless you're getting your shit pushed in and don't fuck with your familiarity. That's one of the few ways to increase accuracy.

Oh yeah, and if you're really that determined about taking someone brand new or severely underused/underleveled into combat there's a nice trick where you disable and then revive or temporary tranquilize the last enemy on the map and then do shit around them. Run in sneak in front of a room they're locked in for example will level your stealth and AP crazy fast. Just make sure they can't pick up any guns or such and blow your head off point blank. You get a significant boost to skill growth if there are live enemies around.

I see what you mean but in practice it seems that unless I deliberately take time to grind the skills on my dudes they'll get fucked over. It's just that it's so asinine that difference of my Lvl 15 engineer having 42 in engineering while the benched guys have 100+. The disparity is just too absurd to the point that mine can't use fucking ADVANCED Lockpicks, so I've resigned myself to opening doors and crates by blowing them up. That, and my medic only being able to use Forceps with his 40 Medic skill.

>tranq some dude then just dance around them
LMAO that sounds psychotic but I love it. I'm already killing every civillian I see because, for some fucking reason, they more often than not decide to my guys and sometimes even break my stealth, if not just directly alerting guards to my position. But yeah, I might just decide instead to cycle through people now because the benched ones are so much better. This might actually be a boon because I'm getting mind broken by the same lines

S2/OG game has absurdly unreasonable high skill reqs, as in they're straight up unusable, on some items so don't beat yourself over it. There are mods that rebalance that and other things but you're going to have to dig them out yourself. Hope you know cyrillic

>civillian
I distinctly remember one thorfag dressed as a villager going "I mean you no harm" and then pulling an entire goddamn bazooka out of his asshole and shooting it point blank. Klaus had a bad day at work and my go-to after that incident was to saturate bomb each new map with Panzerschrecks and LMGs before doing anything else.

I might look into some rebalance patch when I get to the Axis campaign, but it's a good thing I chose the protag to be a Medic because that's the one thing that can lag behind without much trouble.

>civs
I just did a similar one but it was 2 civvies in some building that said that exact same line and each pulled out a fucking Suomi then proceeded to rape my Scout who somehow just got knocked unconscious despite being turned into swiss cheese.

Fuck civvies - I shoot them on sight.

It's precisely because it is the worst class, which means it doesn't matter if he lags behind. So long as he has the 2nd tier plaster to heal people up, he's doing his job.

Also the new team is just so fucking OP compared to my previous guys. I picked the innuit scout lady and she just solo'd the entire panzerklein storage facility with just pocket knives, only getting knocked out because some faggot walked out of a toilet with an MG40 while she was doubling back to the team

. It honestly almost feels unfair, but maybe I just got used to using shitty units.

Why have dudes on the bench? Its a six man squad and there are six classes. One man from each class on your team is how the game is intended to be played.

My man there are like 20 characters total. I take 5 from the list and the other 15 are benched. My lineup is already 1 of each class.

Medics can heal wounds better than other classes, Grenadiers can throw 'nades and knives better than Soldiers. The game isn't so hard that min maxing is necessary.

Getting wounded constantly is a skill issue with how the stealth, interrupts and enemy FoV works, and basic ass bandages are sufficient for that catch a stray situation once in awhile.
Using heavies for either of those is silly. Grenades are limited and outright inferior to unlimited free rockets in the first game. If you must use either, and chakrams are pretty good, scouts are so much better. Heavies are there because only they can reliably fire a bunch of rockets, muh particle cannons or LMG the entire map in a single turn.

Engineers would have a use with their demolition items or when PKs come into play but why would you bother with lockpicking one of the few locked doors you can burst fire down? Why would you bother moving that fat ass axel into position to throw TNT when you can rocket it? And why would you use engie in his class PK when the scout one can dance circles around it or the sniper one can fire at the entire map, thru walls, for much better effect? Or even just use a k98 or whatever and one shot headshot their PK.
