the Field of Glory Kingdoms DLC lets you play as them. Far as I can tell you're basically just steppeniggers steppeniggering with a bonus to trade and a few other things

RPing as the Bolghars in CK2 HIP was one of my most memorable campaigns in a gsg game ever

I'll have to try a CK3 run with them, didn't even realize they are the one isolated Clan government that far north. Haven't played since the nomad update though so we'll see how hellish being surrounded by nomads as neighbors is

I was playing a medieval mod for Medieval 2 TW and I took over all of european Russia and then went head to head with the Bulgarians as Volga Bulgaria. Very fun campaign. It helps that their units are really unique and the devs at least did a bit of research instead of just making them a bare bones horse archer or muslim faction and made them their own thing.
