>the Humans are the expert builder race, have a separate smithy and lumber mill and can use multiple peasants to rapidly build a building
>the Orcs "burrow" inside the building during construction and can't be targetted, they also can garrison their food building with peons and add spikes everywhere, causing the attack damage
>the Undead don't need to build at all, the Acolyte does a single hand movement and then the building builds itself, every building also corrupts the land and spreads blight and can also be unsummoned
>the Nightelves don't have workers, but wisps with no ability to attack, who can either construct normal buildings or transform into Ancients (living trees), who can uproot and act like a normal unit
Absolute KINO

What other strategy games do something like this?

Why did you post an image of WC2 where the factions are identical to one another other than spell selection?

Age of Empires 3 has over twenty civs with major differences that can be customized to stand out even more.

I always felt like blight was a wasted mechanic. SC2 did it much better.

AoE3 has honestly TOO much difference between the civs. They don't feel like bonuses at that point. It feels like tedious busywork to learn the differences between Spanish, Ottomans, or Dutch.

why? it gives a mad hp regen boost too. Fighting on or off blight is a real tactical choice for undead

iirc it's 4x the regen of regular human/orcs, and 2x the regen of night elf at night.

I used to be bummed out that blight didn't provide vision like creep does, but the more I thought and engaged with it I realized it was perfectly fine.

Sacrificial Skull alone would have been cancer considering you have to build something on blight or detonate a wisp on it to dispel it, and even then it leaves little splotches unless you align it perfectly. That, and because stealth and stealth detection are very different per faction, blight providing vision would have been both overpowered for UD and annoying and stupid to deal with. I really like how stealth mechanics work on WC3 vs. SC2

The Root boardgame
>One faction plays like an RTS, buildings eco and lots of troops but needs to manage more stuff than he has actions for
>the other has actions galore but needs to follow an autistic schedule or get penalties
>the other is a guerrilla with little map presence, needs hearts and minds instead
> another is a dude playing an RPG
Balance is whatever, especially with addons. But it's FUN

The regen mechanic reflrct this sort of approach as well.
>humans have normal regen on all units, compensated by relative'y easy access to regen items and spells
>orcs have normal regen as well, but generally higher hp pools and more expensive access to regen, balanced by higher troll regen
>night elf regen depends on the time of day while averaging normal value, same as orcs&humans but they have low hp units and relatively easy access to moonwell healing which itself is balanced by mana regen
>UD natural regen is is 0, but they get like 4x the normal value on blight. They also get cannibalize and corpse mechanics which sadly aren't implimented to their fullest potential for the sake of balance, but it's enough to make them stand out.

don't hire people from factories/gaming schools; you get Slopfield.
hire/finance/invest/back/kickstart people that learned everything on their own. it demonstrates their heart for it.
compare this to the person that went to culunary school because they thought being a chef would be an interesting career path vs. the guy who was watching Julia Child's VHS tapes learning how to master baking as a teenager.
That's the difference.

War3 came pretty close and is inching closer. 2020-2022 had some of the strangest and worst balance changes that made the game unfun trash. 2023 to today has been actually good in making each faction different and making more units viable.

Night Elf is still dogshit in terms of variety though. Bears and Dryads every game because those two units do so much. It feels like you're giving up a lot if you invest in huntresses or go for talons and don't have at least dryads or bears.
