But, it's good enough that I don't feel comfortable just shitting on it with no caveats.
Anonymous No.2225836 [Report]
I think this is the first of their recent releases that feels like it mostly got things right. They seem to have taken all the right things from Imperator and Victoria and blended them pretty coherently. I'm glad they listened to the people asking for a pop system and economy, I think that was sorely missing from EU4 and was what kept me from really getting into that game.
Anonymous No.2225873 [Report] >>2225908
>>2225236 (OP)
I don't think it's anywhere close to perfect in its current form, but it seems like they actually built a core game that aspires to be great in every respect—unlike Eu4, Ck3, IR, Vic3, etc. which all made severe compromises in order to do some things well. The potential for Eu5 is absolutely staggering and it really just needs some polish and better AI/balancing to become the consensus best Paradox game.

It's an insane redemption arc honestly. When he said "I don't think you'll like our games from now on" after that one forum user complained about mana I was honestly ready to say that there would never be a good Paradox game again. Ask me that before July of this year and I'd have still said the same. It is INSANE that he managed to put out something that I think will honestly be better than Vic2 in just a few patch cycles.

He's the only visionary at paradox and one of few left in the industry, certainly outside of japan. He genuinely cares about what he is doing beyond mere pandering and giving the fans what they think they want. He has a history of being overambitious, which is why hoi3 launched so badly, but that is better than goi$ and v3 stripping core mechanics from the game and giving huge bonuses to, if not outright enforcing, automation.
>>2226836
I agree but I think it needs to be said that he is surrounded by faggots like Wiz who are the cancer killing paradox. Reminder that Johan was replaced a bit before 2015 and it was after he left that all the terrible awful gamey changes started happening: development instead of base tax was one of the first things Wiz introduced and it was also one of the worst changes to the game.
Hopefully paradox see the celebrated launch of eu4 (and the sales figures from old fans are enough) for them to stop, as cliched as it is to say, dumbing down their games and shoehorning mission trees, focus trees, and other arbitrary crap where you get +69% damage because le uberreichums instead of organic benefits from circumstances.

Okay. Now boot EU4, pick a nation, and play for a hundred years. Then boot EU5, pick the same nation, and play for another hundred of years. The number of ticks would be the same. The number of meaningful decisions you would need to make in EU4 would be several times bigger.
The main problem with EU5 is that there's no actual decisions you need to make, you will do the very same actions as every single country on the map, and in the very same order. You would never want to add to decentralization. You would always start building roads and bridges as soon as possible. You would always switch to 'By blood' and 'Favor the Ruler' because why wouldn't you. You would never think about building forts because the AI won't declare on you anyway, etc. EU5 right now is as shallow as Victoria 3, and that's impressive even by Paradox standards.

there are a number of permanent bonuses to the tune of +2 or even +3 missionary strength, 10-25% trade power, trade efficiency, and basically everything else ontop of the timed ones, which i have far less issue with, like the ottomans' mission which makes artillery completely free for 10 years

I'm just very confused as to what I'm supposed to be doing as a small German single "literal hu" county outside of Frankfurt.

I've managed to grow my demesne to 8 counties now and even upgraded one to a town with another town seized, but there's little chance of being able to supply all my own needs and I'm on the border between two distant trade centers.

Do I just do the logical IRL thing and go Singapore and import food and stuff and focus on finished goods, or do I work on minimizing all basic needs imports first and worry about specialization later? (I understand that my choice of a backwater rural county distant from trade centers and with very feudal values is not ideal for a merchant republic, i like hard mode)
Anonymous No.2228559 [Report]

Just look inward, that's all you can do. The game has an adundance of peacetime mechanics to interact with compared to eu4. Try to keep a province providing food though, relying on food imports doesn't usually work out historically.

This launch is making me miss mana

There, I said it.

I don't care about having 60 buildings, dozens of agendas, and hundreds of characters who each need education, marriage, and power in order to someday become a councilor.

I don't like how there are a million things I can click to spend money on, but only 2 or 3 things are actually worth clicking. Designing noob traps is bad game design and leads to bad AI design.

Automation being required to play just means that the systems aren't worth interacting with and should have been simplified.

I'm just venting. Anno 117 is coming out and I'll keep on eye on how EU5 is developing and if the base game ever goes on sale.
