He pretty much confirmed that in that dev stream when he said he had all the work done for that merch drop and got cold feet due to how it might be received.
He might underestimate how much people actually enjoy contributing to the financial and commercial success of 'idols'. It's a pretty core part of the experience/culture.
Even though individual contributions are insignificant, people get off on 'being a part of and supporting the success', regardless of how real impact they have, it's more of a collective effort(see the lavalamp and fumos for examples).
Idol culture has a competitive streak like that as well, and always had as long back as the AKB days at least.
It's hard to imagine how hard he'd have to push to get any real serious pushback imo, especially with how conservative he is by default.
There will always be a ultra-small minority of complainers who are worthless anyway no matter what. It's always a mistake to take those types seriously.
