Solar flares happen all the time, they just aren't things that will knock out the internet unless it is an incredibly big one, and even then the interruption would be before the flare as networks power down to protect from it. It is possible for a solar flare to be strong enough to knock out a lot of satellites and cause some damage to ground based internet infrastructure, but it wouldn't make the use of the internet unsustainable. Such a big solar flare would probably be a good thing for the internet in the long run as it would force people to actually upgrade some really outdated equipment.
