We only gave up hosting it because we got bored with it for a period, and the server was mostly quite dead.
Then we replaced it with a few modpacks like Hexxit, or a scattering of random server-side mods like McMMO, runecraft and others.
But when Microsoft started to force their way in to the games operation more we pretty much just universally said "yeah na kill yourselves" and all basically stopped playing the game outright.

I'd have assumed they would have pregenerated a fuckload of chunks before server launch.
Would have also made it easier for people to find a place they would want to build at if they could see a birds-eye view of the area.
Things to remember for a future server.

One of the laggiest things is chunk generation, both with respect to the server and client lag, so removing as much of the server-side lag as you can with large servers is always worth doing for the sake of user experience, especially if it is a server launch.
Pre-genning anywhere from 100-500 chunk radius around spawn is usually fine if most are only sticking around for the opening ceremony at first, but if not, then at least 2-5k chunk radius can help smooth things out, most won't travel out really far at first, especially if you give reason to stay nearer spawn I found.

Seen it happen in JP communities too with big collab servers where some people had fallings out, and in some cases peoples communities fighting with each other over pointless shit.

I had to help moderate and manage the community on mine and a friends server to prevent it falling apart because it had a scattering of people from 4chan, Youtube and Minecraft forums all in one place.
The only reasonably biggish drama was a girl from /soc/ camwhoring was mentioned but eventually forgotten with a few retards leaving, and someone built a big statue near a persons floating island and they really didn't like it so the TNT'd it and blew up some of his own island kek, he later left despite the other guy laughing.
