Sakana really did not like the Flavr stuff and the rights around her design are kinda iffy to begin with since the original designs are AI generated and then rigged into a model by fan collaboration. It was fine for an indie but for a licensed corpo he may want to go with a new design/model in order to not deal with any potential legal issues with it.

No, because it extends past just the original design and into the character itself. TECHNICALLY Nyana does not own the Character Nyana Banyana. She has put the most work into the character sure, but technically Pippa is theoretically the copyright holder as she is the one who created the character, but as she did it while making content for phase connect then phase connect could also have a claim to the character. Its just kinda messy and hasn't caused any issue up until now because neither Pippa or Phase care enough to enforce it or dispute her use of it. But lets say that Nyana joins as an invader and a year later Pippa has a bad falling out with Phase and leaves. Then decides to try and claim that she owns all the Flavr stuff as she is the one who created it and they get dragged into legal battles and potentially lose all the investment they put into Invader Nyana.

It sounds silly and far-fetched but it could still happen and just having her debut as a new character with the same personality cuts all of that off before it can even have a chance to happen.

Honestly though I think it's more the AI thing, who exactly has the rights to AI created content is still kinda up in the air and is going to take years of legal battles to really flesh out.
