Western vtubing was doomed from the start when Vshojo took the lead very early on corpo-wise, they were the ones who paved the way on how western chuubas should look like.

Doesn't help that Twitch always had the upper hand over YT when it came to the most popular platform for streaming and it's accessibility.

Not in decline, but stagnant. Niji and Cover are the biggest corpos and they both suffer from extreme japanese autism. As much as you can enjoy either, you gotta admit to yourself that they're not doing anything new nor are they encouraging their streamers/talents to try out new things. Hololive continues to just maintain the status quo, management and the higher ups pretend they didn't lose big talents from both EN and JP almost all at once, one big graduation wave, and their autism and way of handing things and tiring people out will continue to be the same as ever. Nijisanji continues their strategy of just hiring a fuckton of whoever the fuck, it doesn't matter, they hire everyone and lots of them. Maybe one will stick, maybe not, who cares? they sure don't. They don't care about bad PR or controversy at this point either, it's literally their trademark and their specialty and no one really gives a fuck if some niji says or does some retarded shit because it's what they were hired to do.

Everything is just very samey, very stale and neutral. The reason people get excited over the Saba/Nimi/Doobi trio is because they get to re-live the old days of holoEN but this time WITHOUT Cover's corporate autism holding them back, they're free to do whatever with each other. You could argue the same shit happened to Doki and Mint where their followers just wanted to experience each ot them again, but without them wanting to fucking kill themselves because of niji. It's not floundering or failing like NijiEN is, god forbid, but it's definitely feeling stagnant and morale seems low. In this case the idol culture is kind of capping growth by limiting the ability to intermingle with the ACTUAL biggest crowd in the scene: male fleshy youtubers and streamers.
And then there's the fact that the western audience likes concerts, but not THAT much like the japanese do. Being a consistent streamer is far more important for that audience than taking several months to fly to japan and back to record 20 minutes for a paid, in-person show that 98% of fans won't be able to experience. Yes, the streams themselves don't make as much money, but they're far more important for actually gaining new paying fans.

This is of course on top of all the corporate shit and burnout.
