The only reason to not buy singles for deckbuilding is if you are buying a preconstructed commander deck (at or below MSRP) because you like the theme and most of the cards inside, and plan on largely keeping the shell the same with a few minor upgrades.
You buy boosters because you like cracking boosters. Never even pretend to yourself that you are opening boosters for monetary value or for specific cards. The moment that booster leaves its manufacturer packaging it is worth 25c, any exceptions are a random surprise and not a pattern that can be reliably repeated.
