I quit with a Masters because I saw no future in Professorships... back in 2016. Tenure is going the way of the Dodo and the modern economic/technological landscape is going to obsolete the University system as a whole. Four to eight years is just WAY too long for people to prepare for their future career, technology changes too fast. All the while, you're going into debt, unless you're top of your class in Europe or Japan. Even then, you're at the mercy of the state- if they decide to cut student stipends for whatever reason, you'll have to make up the difference.
