Yeah the article is extremely out of date. They stopped the muted thing a few years back.
Apparently they spread the word around through the streamers or something, because they've all talked about it lately. I know last year they told us that for it to count now despite not being an active tab, it needed the slider to be above 25-50% volume, etc. and a bunch of other things.
The forcing to type in chat one is part of their recent anti-bot shit that they mentioned a few days ago. They've been rolling it out gradually.
