It's a wom*n thing. Fun fact: i am the "manager" of a reasonably successful vtuber (high 3view) and she phones it in so often and forces herself. She kept talking about how she wanted to get a fanbase, become reasonably popular, just enjoy a comfy streaming time... and now that she has all that, she keeps yapping that it doesn't feel real because people love her VTuber and not her. Even though, personality-wise, it's almost a wash, but because it's the virtual avatar and not her face, she just doesn't accept it.

Personally they seem pretty run of the mill content wise. I enjoy seeing their clips because of how they react to things but their long content is pretty bland. I will admit their shilling and number shit is a turn off though, but on the flip side they keep clear goals and chug on towards what they want to do, I can respect that. They have made songs, dances, productions so it's not just shilling with zero delivery. Years of conditioning to hate ads is working against them for me.

As soon as streaming overtook pre-recorded video uploads, it was inevitable. The instant a person is able to rattle off whatever the fuck they want, for hours, instead of having to record a bit for 10 minutes and then have someone sit down and edit it (i.e. be forced to watch it), all that shit goes out the window. Corpotubers have more of a reason to keep things seperate and enjoy a competitive advantage doing it.
For the average indie vtuber there's not a lot of gain to kayfabe or kayfabe adjacency and it can hold them back in their ability to leech with other content creators
